Is Microsoft leaving the console race?

As of late they've been hyping up xbox integration with Windows. Some think this is to expand xbox, others think it's a sign xbox is abandoning the console market.

So let's use this as a prediction thread and a general discussion of it. Please give hard predictions with years. Then we can all come back and laugh at how wrong/right we were. I'll start.

I predict xbox systems will become micro pcs like the steambox. Microsoft will make games for windows, and the xbox console is just a specific configuration of hardware. All windows games have default graphics settings for the xbox console, so that those users never need to worry about the complexities of pc gaming.

So my prediction is that with the windows 10 update, xbox one will become the first of these micro PCs. Games will simply be "for xbox" and work on xbox one or PC. Few games will support this at first. By E3 2017 though, xbox one will have zero exclusive software. It'll all work on pc or xbox.

in 18 - 24 months they will announce cloud streaming gaming service available on multiple devices and platforms. (not just windows... ie: apple tv, smart tv's, phones...) then their console will taper off and be no more after another 2-3 years

The future is digital one way or another as much as people may hate it now.

MS is investing on the digital future which can be in the form of mobile gaming, PC gaming and simply using their consoles as a form of digital platform. They've been doing it since XBLA - it was the first step to the future.

MS is gonna expand over just console gaming - Sony is following suit but slowly and not entirely with PSNow.

Only one who is left in the dust is Nintendo who eventually will follow the same path once new leadership arrives in the next few years. Its not a matter of if but when.

I think Microsoft should have made a reference PC in the first place. Then every Xbox game is a PC game.

More likely to say "Microsoft Exclusive" or "Xbox console exclusive" to confuse consumers to think they need an xbox one to play these games

No different than the situation now.

Well that's how you and I understand it... But didn't want to look up an example to post as fact

Well I mean, it's looking like all their exclusives are ending up on PC anyways.

Eventually but not anytime in the near future.

I can see Halo MCC coming to PC possibly next year or the year after.

This is from MS's windows 10 site.

Xbox is coming to Windows, bringing its expansive gaming community and its collection of award-winning Xbox game franchises with it. With the Windows Insider Program, you'll get access to the latest Windows 10 preview builds as soon as they're available. This means you can be one of the first to experience the new Xbox integration, plus other ideas and concepts we're building.

I think it's almost certain it will come.
