He's been in the hospital for a couple weeks cause we found him on the floor borderline septic from a leg wound that got huge and he never got checked out.  Then he just stopped eating and seems to be in so much pain the doctors/nurses can barely move him.
my grandma died shortly after i graduated high school so i remember it well.  she was perfectly healthy until the day she wasn't.   that lasted almost 12 months but in that last year she was in and out of the hospital 8 times.  not that she was in good health otherwise but the final thing that she died to was an ingrown hair.   it got infected and it spread to her blood and then she was gone.

she was 87 if i remember correctly.   at some point it's just time and there is nothing you can do about it.   it probably sounds terrible to say but in some ways i wish she had died sooner.   those last 12 months were not good months for her.

my sister-in-law went from not knowing she had cancer to dying in 8 days.  in some ways it was perfect.   she had 5 good days in which to make her goodbyes and only 3 days of active dying.  now it's over and my brother can focus on helping the kids heal instead of managing hospital commitments.
