Zelda Tears of the Kingdom kinda sucks

I'm not finished but how the heck did this game get great reviews? I would genuinely love to chat with someone who loved it because from my perspective, everything about the game is worse than the first and the joy of "the wild" is completely gone.

This is a checklist grindfest. I have no direction from the game so I'm just randomly doing activities that increase numbers. Was fun at first, I maxed out my stamina while still only having 4 hearts, but it feels like the game is just broken. I have the big special weapon, I'm pretty sure I could go to the boss and win no problem, but I feel so lost and confused. For example I had 97 korok seeds and just finally found a use for them a few minutes ago. I still have no clue what the game wants from me.

The smaller moment to moment stuff is still pretty enjoyable but still a downgrade. The main building mechanic is really hit and miss. Some shrines and some world puzzles are great yet in general I avoid it. The new caves are a nice addition but the deeper underground areas really really suck. I realized the "secret" with the underground yesterday and while it was a fun discovery, it makes the area even less interesting.

I'll post more once I finish but I just don't get it. Have I just been super unlucky and I've missed 90% of the content?

I think the devs really wanted players to walk along a specific road. I now have a quest that is actually giving the game some direction  ;D

Well no but yes  :P

This is really funny/stupid. I'm now getting all these early quests that I can turn in immediately.

"Hey Link, go find this secret area for me. Oh you already found it?"
"Hey Link, go scan 10 shrines for me. Oh you've already scanned a couple hundred?"

It's so incredibly stupid that the game has such a linear structure with its quests yet still allowed me to break everything by doing some quests before others.

open world games are designed to suck.

Finished.

I fully understand that players who happened to take a specific route through the game would have had a much better time. It was such a slog going through all that story content after I had already done practically everything else.

Just makes the game that much worse. It is a game about exploration and creativity, but only if you explore and are creative in the way the devs want.

7/10, I reached 120 shrines and had some fun most of the time. Also for disclosure I used an item dup glitch to decrease grinding.

edt: I'm also really happy that I managed to start the fight against the final boss when I just started the game. Was fun to just blindly progress deeper and deeper until I suddenly recognized where I was.

Now we can get you to play some Souls games.

Legend

Well lets not get crazy Pi ::)

At least with totk it seems a lot of people agree it was meh. No wonder it has had poor legs compared to the first.

@kitler53

You'll never play so this is a fun spoiler for you and anyone else that thinks critically of Nintendo.

This is clear evidence that anything Nintendo is reviewed with bias and they just get high scores because they are Nintendo franchises

kitler53

that all sounds pretty lazy and not a game of not at all worthy of its 96 rating.

i'll never understand how some games get put though the ringer with even the most minor of flaws being blow out of proportion while other games can have massive problems and get praised to high heaven.

It's not a Nintendo exclusive problem, but Skyward Sword is maybe the best proof of hype impacting a game's reviews. The game got a 93 on metacritic when it first released, yet the HD switch port got an 81. Most reviews talk about how the port is an improvement lol.

Yeah it's a brutal lottery. Totk has so many weird minor flaws too. It has good stuff, I still think it's a 7/10, but it'll be interesting to see how it ages.

I feel like that's the norm. I feel like it's unusual if a remaster/port/remake does as well as the original critically. The Uncharted remaster bundle scored lower than any individual Uncharted game in the bundle.

I feel like that's also an issue that playing a game the second time around, usually isn't quite as fun/rewarding as the first time.

Demon's Souls Remake is a weird instance where the remake did notably better than the original.

I think the difference is that those reviews talk about how the port is unnecessary or things like that. Lots of skyward sword hd reviews trash the original. Also 93 to 81 is a lot bigger drop than 92 (3 games averaged) to 88.
