PS1 sold about 25% of its total, after the PS2 launched.
PS2 sold about 33+% of its total after the PS3 launched.  (I would argue that it was helped by high PS3/XB360 cost)
PS3?  At the moment, it's being held back by high price compared to the next gen consoles.  But if it holds up with PS1 numbers, it'll sell over 100 million.   Otherwise, the numbers won't look so good.  But if it gets a boost and lasts as long as PS2, then 120+ million is a possibility.

Pretty good Xbox One numbers but all things considered, MS can't be happy with that. The gap grows

Just crazy how the US is now fully on the PS4 hype train. This will just snowball into even more momentum for PS4, as we saw last gen with 360 in the US.

Have we ever had such impactful launch events and E3 preceding the launch of the new consoles? I mean quite literally MS messed things up back then and have not been able to recover.

Coming off of last gen we were looking at an even split and possibly a more dominant MS. But in the space of a year, it went in the complete opposite direction to the point where PS4 is outselling the X1 in its best region 2:1.

The PS3 price announcement comes to mind, but that in itself didn't kill off interest in the console.

they have almost spent 3billion alone on Minecraft and NFL deal. They have obviously spent a decent amount on DR3, Ryse, GeoW, Tr:r, Ac and Madden... I can't see investors being too enthused with more money spent until they show they can recoup some they already spent
Microsoft has burned through enough money that the game division will never make it back.

Never is a long time. Who can even imagine the industry 20 years from now?

I wouldn't predict them to make it back since I see Xbox One being potentially their last gen, but if they do stick around breaking even seems possible long term.

20 years?
Who can imagine 10 years from now?  5 even.
5 is easier, but still... who knows?
