Games that shift genre halfway through

Why do they do it?

Lightmatter is a slow logic based puzzle game that becomes a timed platformer near the end. Why!?!? I didn't mind the platforming, but so many people hated it. Such a massive difficulty spike out of the blue unless you already play platformers.

There's also Echo. The first hour and a half are a slow walking simulator, and it looks really good! I should love this game! Yet the last 4.5 hours are a hardcore stealth game with combat arena after combat arena. People mod the game to remove the opening.

Mixing genres can be great if they overlap, like Portal with both puzzles and platforming. I can't however think of any game that successfully switched genres. Both above games are good despite doing this, not because of this.

Do yall have any games you liked/disliked that tried this?

I don't mind if a game switches genre for like a mission or two. But not completely change. Also if they are gonna switch genre, don't increase the difficulty a lot

Hollow knight is a metdriovania. But there was one mission where it turned into a crazy difficult platformer. It was really really frustrating. I almost dropped the game even though I loved it so much
