my take:

the economy is in a downturn all around.   paying $20 for a character skin:
1. is one of the easiest things in the world to cut back on when money is tight
2. becomes harder and harder of a sell the older a game is.

was i clear on #2?   all i'm saying was when i first started rocket league i loved each and every cosmetic item i got.   but there is a point when more cosmetic items feel completely worthless.   i have access to dozens of car types with thousands of paint job, toppers, goal explosions.  a new cosmetics item not only needs to be new it needs to be better than what i already have.  that gets harder and harder to do when i have soo many things to the point where most of the things i get feel worthless to me.

as some point it feels like all of these forever games are doomed to implode.

It feels like we are gonna end up going full circle and going back to subscriptions like how WoW was

i'd kind of be okay with that to be honest.

i played wow obsessively and i can at least say this.   most of the content being created was gamplay related not costumes.   yeah there were some epic mounts and pets but in general new content was a new raid dugngeon, and new area on the map, and new spells that changed the way the game was played.

much better than a hat.

Yeah at some point cosmetics won't bring people back or they will stop paying for them.

Honestly I think most games have a lifespan anyways. People will move on and want to go to the next one or new experience at some point.

The only game that seems to have withhold the test of time so far is WoW
