Marvel vs DC thoughts

I mostly grew up with DC (Justice League, Batman Arkham games, Dark Knight series, Smallville), but Marvel has had a much better run on the movie side in recent times.  It was never a huge part of my life, but I have a lot more fondness for DC to this day.  


I've seen the sentiment that Marvel is about humans trying to be gods, while DC is about gods trying to be human. And I think that's a little too general. Like Thor is literally a Norse God.  

I do think that more of the superheroes in Marvel tend to have a radiation/chemical based origin, whereas DC has a lot of heroes where they're just born that way.  But there are exceptions - Thor on Marvel's side, Flash on DC's side are obvious ones.

I liked spiderman and batman and superman as a kid, but it was only about liking their movies. I liked teen titans on comedy central and I thought cyborg and some others were cool characters, but I never cared about them in a show/actor agnostic way.


That's carried forward. There are good super hero movies, but I couldn't care less about these connected universes they keep pushing. Maybe that's why Iron Man, Wonder Woman, Suicide Squad, etc. are all the better ones imo. More stand alone.

Not really Marvel related, but I thought I'd put this here - and I might put more stuff in here.  

YouTube has been suggesting clips about the Superman movie.  


David Corenswet/Superman seems to be a genuine DC fan. Whereas the people who play Lois and Lex aren't - he seems to be the only one who knows who Martian Manhunter is.  

And he convinced James Gunn that Superman needs the trunks.  



I'm very excited for the future of DCU.

It still feels sooner than I expected, Batman Part II is aiming for a sequel 5 years after the original.

I kind of appreciate Smallville more now, really thinking about it. 

The writing could have been better - it is a long show with a lot of monster of the week kind of thing. 

But a lot of the characters are great.  

Stan Lee and James Gunn both flat out said that this was the best Lex Luthor. 

Gene Hackman, i felt was a little overly comical. Michael Rosenbaum, I think he came across as competent and had the right level of arrogance, where you can believe he's the villain, but you can still understand why people like him.

No one really cares about DC in Europe apart from Batman. Marvel is much more popular and recognisable.

Batman and Spider-Man for me.  

everything else is B tier or less.  I can enjoy other characters if the movie is actually good but they rarely are.  

that Christopher Nolan Batmans and the recent spider verse movies are probably the best superhero movies ever made. 


I did quite enjoy the new fantastic four movie though.  it had an actual plot that contextualized the action.   most are action just for the sake of action which is dumb.

I feel very fond of the first iron man movie. But it's not as good.


There are some other characters that I really enjoy from the Justice League animated series - Green Lantern, Wonder Woman, Flash, Martian Manhunter, Hawk Girl.

And I'm hoping that DC is capable of creating at least decent live action movies with some of them, for once.

As far as @Legend goes for Superman as a good start?  It was good.  Though the more I think about Lex Luthor and everything revolving around Lex Luthor, the worse it gets.  Though it's a "start", it's why James Gunn focused on not Hal Jordan or John Stewart (Focusing on other heros).  For how far it goes?  Alluding to what I said in my opening sentence; I feel like something isn't right.  The marketing monkeys (As James Gunn called them) were in full force trying to make it look like it did better than Man of Steel (It didn't), which, I don't know why you'd try to shitting on its predecessor, unless someone at WB was questioning scrapping everything.  "See, we did better than Man of Steel?" as some kind of flex sure is something.  James Gunn, the man in charge of DC's studios, either lied or didn't know Superman's Blu-ray and digital release was mid August (He said September), almost a month after the theatrical release.  Which means someone went behind his back.  I could essentially watch all of the movie on Facebook, which again, the marketing monkeys were out trying to promote the film as much as they could.  Reading between the lines, you'd get the feeling that James Gunn was trying to silently get The Batman 2 cancelled, yet all of a sudden they're fast tracking the movie, again, behind James Gunn's back I imagine.  Even announcing The Man of Tomorrow?  You have Supergirl coming out soon, and you have Clayface, which you've pretty much neglected to talk about.  "Hey James Gunn, what's next?" "Well, we have Supergirl and Clayface coming out soon, with more to follow at a future announcement.", instead his answer is "Superman Man of Tomorrow is coming out in two years somehow, even though I don't have a script and totally said I wasn't green lighting any projects without one."  So I think something's wrong, but maybe everything's fine.  P.S. holy crud was Lex terrible in this movie.
