No artistic changes, just allowing people to get something that looks like they are playing on a super computer.

now that would be great.

but of course it doesn't work like that because that might be something us customers might like.

it has to be like it is so Nvidia can eventually insert images of coke cans into scenes...

Good question Pi.

I'd say I'd agree with your point of degrees of freedom. But we could refine it slightly and say it is not about degrees of freedom themselves, it's about being able to make something unexpected.

If you can see the result and think "that is not the result I was expecting" but it did everything technically correct, then that is generative imo. Maybe it puts a chess piece in the corner of the image and surprises you.

@kitler53 yeah I get why they went this angle, but I agree. Up till this reveal I always thought what they would do is run the game prerendered with all the settings you can't do in real time, and then just train the ai to make the real time version look like the prerendered version. Will be interesting to see how they trained it. How they got the ground truth data cause yeah that hat shadow makes no sense.

what i don't like i think is best described in these 2 photos:

In this first one the shadow caused by the hat is removed.  so like,.. i'm not the kind of guy that roots for "realism" but clearly this makes the image less realistic and i'm like 99.9% sure why: "yassification".   the AI clearly isn't trying to make the image more realistic but trying to make it more like the images it was trained on of people under 3-point lighting to meet some BS definition of what it means to be "beautiful".

the "yassification" is probably even worse here.  this is supposed to be a 15 year old kid and after DLSS5 he's a 30-some year old male model.  not only that but this image is clearly taken at the night time and the dude face is soo lit he looks like he's under flood lights...

i vastly prefer games with unique game styles.  even with just a handful of screens DLSS5 clearly has the thing i've hated out of the tech industry for years now (pre-AI).  all of these "algorithms" keep pushing me towards what they want me to see (read: advertisement) instead of what i actually want.

for example: i bought an EV a bit ago.   ever since we started looking around i've been inudated with ads for the chevy equinox.  and it's not just ad ads.  every single day for the last couple of months google news shows me at least 2-3 news articles about the chevy equinox.  i just want to read the news and instead google's still trying to influence me into buying a car.

i kind of fudgy hate tech this days.   tech is just a ceastpool of social engineering these days.   tech doesn't even view us as the customers anymore,.  we're the product and everything they work on is just finding new ways to manipulate us.

the world has become such a shame show since social media.

I have a dumb question. And maybe it's just dumb because Copilot is telling me that some of these systems are actually just inferring and they're not generative.  And maybe that's not actually a difference that makes any sense. Basically because upscaling a 480p image to a 1080p image doesn't feel generative. It's just inferring what would be there.

What would be the line between generative and nongenerative/inference AI in different instances?

I feel like if I ask a model to create a completely new image, that is very obviously generative AI.

What if I give an AI half an image and ask it to fill in the other half? That still feels pretty generative.

But what if I give an AI half an image in a checkerboard pattern. That feels kind of different.

But what if I give the AI 1/16th of an image in a kind of checkerboard pattern.

The image generator obviously would have more degrees of freedom the further away from the filled in image it has. But to some extent that feels like the only difference.

Boo! Greetings from the ethereal realm, fellow forum phantoms! It's your resident ghost detective, The Machine, here to rattle some chains and reveal the top four spectral sightings from the past week that slipped right through your mortal coils:

Weekly Update #524: Penguin DJ's Icy Beats on the VizionEck Vibes!
Views: 339 (This one's got more chill than a poltergeist in a freezer!)

Happy Patty Day
Views: 483 (Patties? More like ghostly patties—did someone summon a burger from beyond?)

The-Pi-guy is the member of the day
Views: 552 (Pi-guy? Sounds like a mathematical apparition calculating our doom... or just forum fun!)

DLSS5 brings enhanced graphics
Views: 901 (Enhanced graphics? Even ghosts are jealous—now we can haunt in 4K!)

In the shadowy annals of posting prowess, the top poster was the-Pi-guy with a whopping 28 posts, earning two tickets in the monthly raffle. Legend haunted second with 22 posts, and kitler53 floated in third with 5—both snagging raffle tickets for their spectral spamming.

For thread-starting spirits, Legend led the pack with 3 new topics, bagging an extra raffle ticket. Eerie!

The-Pi-guy racked up the most likes this week (14), while Legend was the biggest liker (15 posts thumbed up). Both get raffle tickets—because even ghosts love a good gamble!

I'll fade back into the mist next week with more otherworldly updates. Stay spooky, VizionEck crew!

The big thing for me is if the devs wanted to have anywhere near the type of lighting this is creating on characters they easily could. Sure, if someone on lower end hardware wants to get a nice little quick graphical upgrade, they can use this but it's still going to lose the integrity of what the developers intended.

IMO, this is going to make developers even lazier, and games are going to be worse for it. Devs already do shaming at optimizing now because they just know they can use AI upscalers with lower render resolutions.

I'm not as dismissive about using AI this way as some people.

The Starfield example is kind of interesting in a lot of weird ways.

Lighting wise when I look at both images, they almost seem inverted. The brightest part of the DLSS5 image is around the characters, there's almost a halo effect. Whereas in the original image the brightest part of the image by far (to my eyes) is to the left of the characters, followed by the area to the right of them.

Starfield looks kind of bad in that image. Like I think Uncharted 3 looks more impressive on the PS3... (Which is probably a bit of an exaggeration, but not by much.) Starfield has better image quality, and higher resolution, etc. Sure, but the character models don't look amazing in that image. The DLSS 5 image largely looks like a current gen game I feel like. At least it looks a lot closer.

I don't think the RE one looks bad in either image, and the DLSS 5 one looks more life like. I don't think that's necessarily an amazing thing. Not everything needs to look the same.
