Title: Let's design a forum!
Post by: Legend on May 02, 2014, 10:30 PM
First off, this forum is associated with my indie game studio. We're on vizioneck.com/forum, and my studio info will be on the front page. There will just be a link from there to here.

Because of that, my only demands are that there's dedicated forum space for my studio and my games that users uninterested in everything else can easily find.

Also especially during these early days, I'm creating the VizionEck image. Swearing, NSFW content, etc. will have a place on this forum but to the average INTERNET traveler this place needs to appear G rated and ooze classiness.

Beyond those two, this forum is for us: the gamers. Let's work together to make it the best it possibly can be. What do you want out of it? What's our mission statement? How do we stand out? Etc.

Let's make magic.

Now that I actually put some thought into this.  How about you put the top topic as your game?  That way you can place updates and videos in there and we can critique the game as you design.

I believe in many products for many people, verse one product for a group.

The current forum allows words to be replaced. If you put the f word in a post, it's made G. However in your settings you can disable this. Users who want swearing can have it, but it doesn't affect those who don't.

Spamming is allowed in community areas but is moderated in severe cases. As in, an entire page where every post is one letter to create a word. Handled on a case by case basis. Spamming outside of community areas is not allowed unless declared otherwise.

Community areas are also to be designated NSFW environments. Anything goes in them with the obvious exceptions of anything that would be considered pornographic or display excessive real life violence.

I added a few words for censoring.

I envision community areas as hangouts for members discussing that game. I think it would be best to not have platform community threads. Those were needed on vgchartz due to that forum's structure, but they shouldn't be needed here. Especially while we're still small. This entire forum is the PlayStation Community lol.

So spamming in community threads makes sense. They're just places for fun.

NSFW should also work, but the threads need to stay on topic. A Gravity Rush 2 community thread could have NSFW cosplay, but if it starts dwelling off into a Cosplay thread we can use the split feature and make a Cosplay community thread.

Off topic NSFW comments that most of you guys like to do could be done with ghost comments. Like a user with them enabled sees the comments intermixed within the thread and a user with them disabled just sees the on topic thread posts.

Oh of course.

Spamming for the amusement of the community would be allowed, but spamming for personal gain isn't.

Though it does have a slight issue that it only works with full words.  Though, I'm not sure that it's a big one.

So where will the sales go? Gaming - Community?
Title: Re: Let's design a forum!
Post by: darkknightkryta on May 03, 2014, 12:07 AM
Leave it in gaming.
Title: Re: Let's design a forum!
Post by: Legend on May 03, 2014, 12:13 AM

So where will the sales go? Gaming - Community?

If the source of a thread is outside the forum, it goes in news.

If the source of a thread is within the forum, it goes in community.

So if Sony announces 8 million sold, that's in news. If it starts going off topic into a general discussion of ps4 sales, the thread is moved to community with a link remaining in the original thread.

A sales thread asking when ps4 will pass vita would go in community.

Plus I think we can use a tag system on top of this dividing news into playstation, sales, etc.

Should community go under a different name?
Title: Re: Let's design a forum!

I think it is fine that way, I kind of feel like we should have a section for rules.  I think either:
A.)  Have a rules tab, not really part of the forums.  Kind of like VG, where there is a forum rules, but you can't post in there or anything.
B.)  Have a section, perhaps in Forum Development where mods/admins can create threads for rules.
Title: Re: Let's design a forum!
Post by: Legend on May 03, 2014, 02:26 AM
For the time being a rule forum makes sense. In the future however it should get a dedicated page.

Also as you could tell I moved most of the topics to the ne area. Not sure what to do with the ps nation though. this whole forum is now the ps nation. Having a thread for it seems silly.

I think there is still confusion on what the general intent is with this forum. Are we a general gaming forum or are we a PlayStation gaming forum that allows talk about other platforms?

All platforms.

For the moment we're 100% ps fans though. Maybe in the future we might have to change things, but right now I don'tthink it matters.

We should.... have some more promiscuous threads....
Title: Re: Let's design a forum!

Perhaps we should just hide the PlayStation Nation thread for awhile? If in the future we plan on getting people of all preferences in here then we can bring it back out but yeah. It seems kind of pointless at the moment to have that here when the entire forum is basically our playground.

It's locked and put in an archive.

Should we have a locked thread that only certain people can update that gives a list of upcoming games and their release dates?

You should have forum rules and site news in a top section above the rest, and they should be something that no one can comment in except mods as needed...

Also, as far as the default theme is concerned, I think it should be something that catches your eye but not something that intimidates you. Something bright but not blinding. Not plain but not too show-y.

Here's an idea: (Slightly) Larger avatars!
Title: Re: Let's design a forum!
Post by: 7H3 on May 06, 2014, 02:00 AM
I suggest the vizioneck be split and moved to the top of the page. The split would be website feedback, and moderation feedback which could go into a feedback section at the bottom of the page. After the site is 60-75% completion change primary topic 1 "Let's design it together" to "Site News" and lock 'em down. Further suggestions, at that point in time for the forum/website should be directed to the appropriate section.
Also perhaps it would be nice to create a multimedia section for discussing music, movies, anime, comics?...

Title: Re: Let's design a forum!

yeah for now... or keep it all at the bottom but add a site news section along with the rules to the top... I would lock the Legal TOS and rules stuff though. Site news and announcements don't necessarily need to be locked. and when the forum grows to over 100+ people it would be better to have dedicated news posters that can create a thread in the gaming news area. I don't know how the MOD/ADmin CP is set up with this board, but you could potentially create dozens of different jobs for modding specific sections or creating threads and stuff like that.

We now have two buttons in the header that go to the same place, the show unread posts since your last visit and home. If we're gonna keep the home button going to that page then we should remove the link under your name. Although, I would much rather keep the link and have home going back to the front page.

They go to the same place atm, but I'm re-coding the home one to make it better fit our needs.

Imagine the page how it is, but it also includes topics with no new posts. Crazy!

Also it'd have the same footer as the old home.

If it works out, it'll also have filtering options.

I think we need a sweet logo at the top of the website. Right here where I circled it, it should have the word VisionEck or something that looks cool

That area is collapsable. Press the arrow on the top right corner.

The logo will replace the current VizionEck Forum (beta) text.

I know we have a "Show new replies to your posts" option but that doesn't seem to work properly. I often find threads there that have new posts but i wasn't quoted.

Is this possible to do? Thoughts?

All official game threads I make will be cross posted on the front page. It really shouldn't be a problem. People coming for the game will have that info right in front of them, while people coming for the forum will see that info stickied.
