Change is strange

I was reading a thread about SNES game prices and included was a listing of some Game boy games.

Progress is great. Gaming is more accessible on cell phones and it is becoming more accessible due to digital titles and streaming.  No need to go to a store.  Potentially no need for a console.

But it's kind of sad to think that portable gaming consoles don't seem like they'll ever be a thing anymore.  It's hard to argue though that mobile phones are a good replacement.

I'm worried about this happening with streaming. Consoles are still very popular, but it will be a sad day if streaming replaces consoles.

Gaming has changed in so many ways. Some good, some bad, some inconsequential. We have VR and 3D, that's great. Microstransactions can suck, but they are often not needed for a good experience.

But a lot of changes mean that a lot of memories aren't really happening anymore.  No more linking up GBA games.  Very few physical game stores.

Part of me is worried about the industry.

Legend

I think the industry has improved and will continue to improve, but there are so many things I miss. Cheat codes were a huge part of my childhood and now they barely exist. My brother and cousins used to have pages and pages of cheat codes printed out.

I also miss how limited the industry was. I know that in almost every way that was a bad thing, but it was cool how a small 10 person team could be making the biggest games and how bad games still felt like something special. The industry will get better as it opens up to more and more developers, but we'll quickly have a few 10,000 person studios doing AAAA while everyone else just works in smaller bubbles.
