Title: 3D Modeling Thread
Post by: the-pi-guy on Jun 20, 2019, 01:57 AM
So I've literally just started learning how to model 3D objects using blender.

Day 2 of tutorials.  So I can't make anything, but I'm hoping that making a thread will keep me motivated.

Already having slight difficulties.  Tutorial has a cube that has the scales and dimensions set up so that it is a diamond that isn't a rhombus from above.

And yet, whenever I change scales or dimensions, they change the other automatically.  So I'm probably missing a step....

Are you scaling in edit mode? That allows the dimensions to change without changing the listed scale.

Figured out what I was missing.
I had to apply a certain transformation first with CTRL + A

Here is a WIP im working now in zbrush. When I get home ill load more if you want. BTW you're a student so you can get maya for free. Actually anyone can. Just say your a student and pick a school. Easy.

Meet Google Drive - One place for all your files (https://drive.google.com/file/d/17AvMDYe27whTtHKc9JBAOfvmW4heL3KRbQ/view?usp=drivesdk)

Very WIP. It should look a lot nicer soonish.

I just assumed you wanted to restrict access to only cool people  8)

Looking good. Modeling thick hair like that must be interesting.

Most of the hair is just a place holder. Having something there to react to. That said most of it is just a long rectangle that I shaped around the head.
That looks insane.  :o
Thanks, but I feel I still have a long way to go.

Ugh.
I can't believe this was 3 weeks ago now.

And here I thought I sucked for going 2 weeks without touching Blender.

You can attach them if they are small enough but I just use imgur for that.

So my Japanese new years resolution has been going well, so I'm going to add modelling to my new year's resolution.  Starting from February 1st, every day I'm going to spend at least ~15 minutes on tutorials.

"Gamifying" it a little bit by keeping track of which days I did something.

Looks like the image shows up.

This was really painful.  The guy makes it look easy to make.

Does anyone have any good tutorials?

Think I need something faster paced.

Are you still learning blender basics or trying to get into general modeling?

I'm having a hard time settling on a style.

What my models should look like.

Cartoony, a little more realistic, etc.

Just copy something.

Using a game or two as a reference is a great way to get a running start. That way you're building skills and producing your own work, but not also functioning as a concept artist.

I do a mix of both. Most of the time a do Stylized. But sometimes I go a bit more realistic.

My last model.

The one before that

and the one before that.

The most important thing is just to get to it. You'll develop a style over time. I'm still working on mine.

Thanks, They are okay. I don't really feel like I'm good at this. But you'll move on from cubes fast enough.

Sometimes I feel the sculpts that get the most reaction are really the easiest. like that brick on the base of the clicker. It's just a texture. It' real detail, but I used a stock zbrush texture to make it. It's sorta strange, but something stylized get's a lot less reaction even though it's harder. As every shape you make has to be intentional. Very few happy accidents.

honestly the biggest thing you could do is to go for more realism first and get proportions, anatomy, or how things look in general in real life down 100% or close to.  Then you can start embellishing on proportions or things that you might like. This should naturally start developing your own style.

I know quite a few people i went to school with who tried to go stylish too early and everything they made just looked off.  Cause even in stylized art things still need to look and read like the thing your trying to make.

I think what I need is:
- download a good tutorial from the internet.
- disconnect my devices from the internet
- spend a few months on just blender, after saying good bye to all my friends.

And I honestly think I will try this.

Noooo don't!

I've been slowly getting used to the new Blender. Lots of the tools are nice but simultaneously only 95% of what I need. Kinda tempted to make my own extensions.

Upgraded blender from 2.90.1 to 3.4.1

Hopefully nothing changed  ::)

EDT: wow 3.4.1 is so much slower. Maybe my pc needs a restart, but it renders slow and is sluggish even displaying a 4k render.

Haha I just found an old Christmas card.

I've been using Blender since 2006. I think I remember the old 2.42 splash screen but I definitely remember upgrading to the 2.43 splash screen and being impressed by those eyes every time I booted it up.
