Horizon 2 and Gow 2 will not make it imo.

Halo Infinite could be similar to Halo 5.

Kena, Deathloop, and everything h2 could get another delay out of 2021.

There are good games like Returnal, Resident Evil, Hapax, and Ratchet, but it sure feels like covid is impacting this year hard. Maybe some big 2021 games haven't been announced but I don't expect a bunch of them.

BananaKing

It won't be great. But I dont know about bad. I feel horizon will make it.

We will get battlefield 6. Not sure how good or bad the next call of duty will be.

We will most likely get Dying Light 2. But yeah, doesn't seem like a stellar year. Those who will release might benefit a lot from this.

the-pi-guy

I think Horizon is safe this year.

GoW is not.  :'(

my backlog is 2 years deep so I guess I don't care either way.

returnal looks great and ratchet will be for sure.  it takes two is on my list of must haves and kena probably will be too.   if horizon drops this year that's a year's worth of games for me.

My backlog is insane as well. I have uncharted lost legacy, which im playing now, doom eternal, the last two tomb raider games, vampyre and control. And these are games I 100% want to play. Add to that the bioshock collection, shadow of war, spyro trilogy, metro redux,  hitman and there are just a bunch of games in my backlog, I wont be buying any games anytime soon

Xevross

It'll be a down year but still way better than 2019. If Horizon 2 does make it then its not even much of a down year from 2020, provided there's not too many other big delays.

for me i've been putting a hold on my AAA games and really just playing smaller titles these days.   this is intentional since i think the big AAA games will benefit more for the ps5 upgrade so from my list of must plays:
- spider man
- TLoU 2
- GoT
- VC 4
- horizion dlc
- days gone
- control
- detroit
- doom
- final fantasy remake
- tomb raider 3
- star wars fallen order
- dreams
+ whatever i'm getting from the playstation collection.  i can't remember exactly but there was another 2-3 in there i wanted to play

i also bought a bunch of indie on that one ps indies sale so i'm also playing
- cuphead
- super lucky's tale
- outer wilds
- oxen free
- yooka laylee 2D platformer
- crossing souls
- owl boy
- scott pilgrim
- under tale
- celeste
- soma

...and i'm playing hollow knight atm.   i should really finish up until dawn too.

i'm going to retract my prior statement.  i'm probably at a 3+ year backlog on AAA.  it typically takes me 2-3 months to play 1 AAA game.

I thought 2019 was good for my personal tastes but yeah I guess it lacked big tent poll releases too. Death Stranding ended up too decisive even though I loved it.

2017, 2018 and 2020 were all crazy years for gaming. 2019 was good enough but down on those. Some games from each year:

2017: Switch release, Zelda BOTW, HZD, SMO, Persona 5, Divinity OS2, Hollow Knight, Nier Automata, Cuphead, Nioh, RE7, Wolfenstein 2, Sonic Mania, Yakuza 0, Splatoon 2, MK8D, Uncharted LL, Ys 8
2018: GOW, RDR2, Spider-Man, SSBU, FH4, SOTC, Celeste, MHW, Tetris Effect, Astro Bot, Obra Dinn, Dead Cells, Into the Breach, POE2, NNK2, Subnautica, Octopath Traveller, AC Odyssey, FC5
2019: RE2, Disco Elysium, Sekiro, MHW Iceborne, Slay The Spire, DMC5, FE3H, Astral Chain, SMM2, Zelda LA, Outer Wilds, Death Stranding, Control, Gears 5, SWJFO, CTR NF
2020: Hades, TLOU2, HL Alyx, Demon's Souls, Ori 2, Flight Sim, CK3, ACNH, Dreams, Doom E, THPS1+2, FF7R, Spidey MM, Spelunky 2, Spiritfarer, 13 Sentinels, Ghost, YakuzaLAD, Nioh 2, Crash 4, Huntdown, Astro's Playroom

I guess on paper 2019 isn't so bad. Just for my tastes it was way down. Number of games from each year that I scored 90+: 2017 9, 2018 8, 2019 1, 2020 6.

Lets see what the list could look like for 2021:

SM3DW+BF, MHR, Hitman 3, It Takes Two, Returnal, R&C ITN, HFW, Halo I, FC6, Deathloop, Back 4 Blood, Ghostwire Tokyo, Stray, Kena, Dying Light 2

Lots of other games slated for 2021 that could be super good but doubtful: Biomutant, New Pokemon Snap, Psychonauts 2, Humankind, Mario Golf, Scorn

Plus rumoured 2021 games like FH5 and Starfield. And GOW2...

If nothing else slips 2021 then it could be a great year, if stuff like GOW2 and Starfield make it then it could be an excellent year on the level of 2020.

really?  now that you wrote it down 2019 looks like a flaming pile a poo compared to 17,18, and especially 20.

How is hollow Knight? I kept hearing about it, so funnily enough when I was looking at my backlog to make my post to you i saw it, and pressed download. Then you mention it.

And yeah, I am doing something similar, some games that will have a PS5 upgrade I wont play on PS4. Miles moralis, horizon and seems TLoU as well, even though I dont plan on getting a PS5 anytime soon. But I feel playing miles morales without raytracing would be a wasted opportunity

the-pi-guy

Hollow knight is awesome. I'm only like 6 hours in, but it's definitely a must play.

i feel like i don't love it as much as everyone else does.  i like it quite a bit but i feel like my experience has been degraded by all the hype i heard before starting it.  it's about as good as a 2D metroidvania title can get but it isn't any better than any of the other games in the genre i've played.   some people rave about the way the map system works,.. i find it quite annoying tbh.  it's probably the singular reason i'd rate it marginally below the genre's other top titles.

as negative as that may have sound let me assure you that you won't regret playing.   its well worth your time.  i'll pick up the sequel.

Bump time!

Yes?

We had the first new Metroid game released in 11 years and not everything was delayed, but yeah I'd say it's been a bad year. Forza Horizon 5 is the only game including indies to get a 90 or better on opencritic. Lowering the threshold to 85 or better, the year is more nominal.
