Xbox had a terrible month. Mario Party being in third place shows multiplats like Tomb Raider flopped hard. Spidey is a beast, Benji saying sales are huge, and to beat NBA by a mile is very impressive.

The hugest. Really impressed with Mario Party taking third with two days of physical only.

By my records PS4 sold ~2.49M Jan-Sept last year and ~2.71M this year. So decently up. October isn't looking good though apparently, needs a big Red Dead boost. If they go $199 around black friday again with more stock this time I can see them saying up YOY.

Mega ps4 sales.

Decent switch.

crud xbox.

October will be big aswell but it's a 4 week month so naturally will be down on this month.

November huge and bigger then December. Switch might have a bigger December then January though.

Spidey being the 7th biggest launch on a PS platform ever is absolutely massive. Holy shame!

Edit: so what are the six above it? GTAV for sure, I guess the peak CODs as well like MW2, Black Ops, MW3? What else... Black Ops 3,  World War 2, Destiny?

This can't be right? Your telling me it beat out some CoD games? I mean realistically the top 10 game launches on PS platforms is a list of either CoD or GTA.

I don't know if Destiny or The Division beat it. I think those sold around 6 million first week WW. And that has Xbox and PC platforms on it. Also it seems that Spidey's legs were monstrous. Because while launch week was amazing, it's months sales are flipping huge it seems

Yes I expect the top is GTA and COD mostly, and Spidey absolutely fit in at #7, which is just nuts.

Crazy that the first record has been broken twice in 2018 after being held by GTA San Andreas all this time.

So what are we thinking?

1- GTA5
2- CoD BO2
3- CoD MW3
4- CoD BO1
5- CoD BO3
6- CoD BO4
7- Spidey?

I really really want to know sales numbers of it now

NBA is the biggest sports game launch EVER. That kind of got swept under the rug. Yet, it got beaten quite heavily by Spider-Man. Cray!

So what are we thinking?

1- GTA5
2- CoD BO2
3- CoD MW3
4- CoD BO1
5- CoD BO3
6- CoD BO4
7- Spidey?

Really hard to tell with COD since we don't know the xbox/ ps3 split. However, we know PS3 had 31% of MW2 sales with 1.87M as the numbers were released back then.

Black Ops sold 8.4M - 31% would be 2.6M
MW3 sold 9M - 31% would be 2.8M
BO2 sold 7.4M - 31% would be 2.3M

Hard to tell any more. WW2 launched at 4.4M and I bet more than half of that was PS4, so that's another 2.3M+. Black Ops 3 was leaked with 2.14M including bundles. Black Ops 4 won't count yet. The rest won't be high enough.

Edit: WW2 4.4M was retail only, so that's going to be way over 2.3M with digital included.

1. GTA5 3.5M+
2. MW3 ~2.8M
3. BO ~2.6M
4. WW2 ~2.4M+
5. BO2 ~2.3M
6. BO3 - 2.14M
7. Spidey

Unless I'm forgetting an obvious big game.

Edit again: if its including the Ghosts combined PS3+PS4 launch then that goes above, and Spidey is higher than BO3's 2.14M.

Well this is interesting. Madden '09 debuted with 2.3M in 2008 August NPD. Assuming that was sold at $60, NBA this year must have sold fairly close to that figure (probably a bit less with special editions etc.), but this supports Spidey being 2.3M+, as it should be quite far ahead of NBA.

Are you getting that 2.3 million based on revenue? Or actual unit sales?

He's taking the 2.3 million unit sales and trying to compare to unknown revenue.

Switching to revenue now has really screwed everything, god dang nabbit NPD!

I think its safe to say Spidey sold 2M+ though, very likely less than 2.5M

Spidey sales are insane. October legs should be good. November will be huge with black friday. Then holiday sales. 10m before the end of January?

Benji said Spidey sales were closer to Halo 3 (3.3M) than GOW (1.9M), so we know Spidey debuted at 2.6M+. That's fudgy nuts.

I expect it will reach 10m this year to be honest. Sounds like it just keeps on selling.

Yeah and I see it selling a lot over the holidays as well. It's a perfect gift for Christmas and the holidays.

If they do a black Friday bundle with Spidey at 200$ then it's gonna sell an absolute shame ton this year.

He's not wrong. Spiderman the type of game you can buy a kid, teenager or young adult as a present. And holy shame Sony should do that and produce a titanic amount.

The ps4 imo can be sold at 200 now at a profit. Spiderman will be on sale this holiday for $30. So that bundle makes financial sense. Unless Sony get greedy and want prople to buy the ps4 and then spiderman. Maybe they will bundle god of war instead but that doesn't have the same appeal to present buying parents.

Yes I expect Spidey and red dead bundles this BF. Perhaps they'll do a Sony bundle of Spidey+gow with a 1tb slim for $249 or something like that.

Or maybe they'll throwback to the tlou gta bundle and go Spidey red dead together. $199 with a game would be killer, hopefully they do that with Spidey.

The PS4 reached the 200 price point a year (or two ago, right?) During the holidays. I doubt it's not profitable or at least breaks even at that price.

What they should do however is have a fortnight bundle at 200$. I doubt they would give epic games a big fee over the Included VBucks.

The fortnight bundle would sell like hotcakes to kids.
Title: Re: September 2018 NPD Results - Spidey Sets New PS Record
Post by: Xevross on Oct 24, 2018, 03:55 PM
More insight. Without bundles, Spidey almost doubled the previous best launch month for a superhero game (from NPD Matt). Arkham City sold 1.5M, and Arkham Knight slightly exceeded this. So we're looking at 2.6-3.0M Spidey without bundles. Nearly doubled points to the higher end of that range.

With Spidey bundles being pretty much the only way to buy a pro, we could well be looking at 3M+ with bundles included. Absolutely nuts.

First thing I noticed!

That list is interesting though, since Spidey is close to 3M then either I've missed games, or we misinterpreted the statement of being 7th. What 6 games sold 3M+ on PS??

I suppose. Spidey doesn't have any special editions or anything so it could have been beaten in revenue by games that sold about 500k less.
