Title: Pi tries to predict a Sony showcase; Sony drops a State of Play... again.
Post by: the-pi-guy on Aug 18, 2022, 10:08 PM
Last two years Sony had a Showcase in early September:
2020 September 16 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iTvbM-W7dD0&ab_channel=GameSpot)
2021 September 9 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T5VtfD2i3rc&t=1818s&ab_channel=PlayStation)

Emboldened by recent leaks, I'm going to predict that there will similarly be a showcase this September.

First the date:
I'm going to predict it will be on the 15th. (I will end up being wrong on this, I am sure.)

Second, some contents:

I'm going to predict that this showcase will have only 1 or 2 first party surprises and a handful of partner games.

I am predicting they will have a show between December and February. Either a big or "medium" show

The Game Awards have grown into a pretty big thing. Unless Sony has a lot, I think they'd just put a trailer or two in the game awards like last year.

Sure. I bet the show is very small like last year with teaser trailers, although it'd be awesome if they had big demos to reveal new projects.

Some have been speculating the show will be on the 8th, so that Spiderman 2 and maybe Wolverine can be at the Disney Gaming show that's on the 9th.

I feel like that probably isn't a factor, but I could see Sony going for more attention. Easy marketing.

But if that's the case then I feel like September 1st/2nd would be more likely. There's an Apple Event on the 7th, so that week is kind of busy.

Kinda makes sense.

Or maybe the disney show is the only show. Spider and wolfy will be there and that's that.

I'm predicting that too.

But the thinking is, Disney and Sony would like it to be there.
Sony gets marketing to Disney fans, and Disney gets to show off their crown jewels.

Well my thinking is,.. wolverine is too early to be shown off.   I believe that insomniac said they had just gotten approval on the project when they announced it or something like that.  Should be quite a while before it has content polished enough to show let alone ship.

I may take back my spiderman 2 bit though.   Miles morales shipped almost two years ago now.  Its an established game so development should go relatively fast and being insomniac and all i'll bet it ships in 2023. They could be ready to show something off especially if its targeting the first half of 2023.

not really.  they need a system seller and they have it in GoW.

the better question is what are their system sellers in 2023?   one of these days MS will actually release a good game and people might even notice...

Will MS studios release a good game anytime soon? I don't think so.

Will a Microsoft owned studio release a good game soon? 100%

I think 2023 will be a competitive year between Sony and MS.

Some of those studios are pretty capable, but they're in a weird place. Like many of them are getting super spread out with multiple projects that all seem to be years out still.

I've never played a Bethesda game but every fan has told me
1. they are buggy as shame
2. they aren't fun until the modding community fixes it

are we really going to say MS made a good game if the PC community is required to fix it?

1.) They are absolutely buggy, doesn't stop them from mostly being great experiences.

2.) Some people never like them, some people only love them with mods, some people like them just fine without mods.

Huh. Irl I've only had the opposite experience. My social circle pre Fallout 4 loved Bethesda. Morrowind, Oblivion, and Skyrim all had glitches on console but they were often people's favorite games.

That's a long long time ago though. Recent Bethesda has been judged by Fallout 4 and Fallout 76 which didn't have the same response.

I still need to play Fallout 4. I actually haven't played any of them.

if true i'd expect either monday or tuesday for a thrusday show.   2 days notice is plenty in today's world.  all i need to do is click a link not book a flight to California.   keeping the announcement of the announcement close to the announcement helps build/maintain the hype.

Sony generally has a show every 2-3 months, usually a State of Play.
So they're due for something. Whether it's a 20-30 minute state of Play, or a 40-60+ minute showcase, who knows?

i could see 2 show incoming.

GoW will almost definetly get a dedicated state of play like GT did earlier this year.

But also sony has got to have something schedule for 1H of 2023.  A "showcase" of various titles coming soon including some new announcements is probably coming too.  that showcase would not be a blowout E3 kind of showcase but i'm sure they've got things to show off.
- i'd bet there is another couple of indie titles coming to extra/premium day-1worth highlighting (like stray)
- third party "partnerships" like forespoken or hogwarts or whatever
- psvr 2
- whatever sony views as their next most import title after GoW ships.  even though sony is announcing most things close to release the next "big thing" will be announced with a longer marketing cycle.

It's unusual that Sony has announced the PS+ Essentials/Extra/Premium line ups at the same time.
They had been announcing the Extra/Premium on the wednesday middle of the month, which would be the 14th.

What if... they pulled it early so that the showcase would be their big news that week?

probably more of a policy change.

it's frustrating to me that for $10 a month people complain so loudly that they aren't getting their money worth from the 15 games they got.   like,.. for fudges sake $10 a month is not a sustainable model for our industry to give you day-1 access to every game from every publisher in the industry and i fukting promise you that if the service did provide that level of service gamers would still complain on a slow month.

putting all the games in-front of them all at once is probably just there to limit the amount of shitposting that happens every month....

I was kind of expecting that my prediction would end up being wrong, thinking a show would happen a week earlier than predicted.

2020: show was announced on Saturday (12th) for Wednesday (16th)
2021: show was announced on Thursday (2nd) for Thursday (9th)

I think we'll see a showcase announcement in the next 8 days.   8)

Feeling less optimistic this week.

One reliable person on Era has said they have been trying to find out about a showcase and there seems to be nothing.

Grubbs has clearly not heard of a showcase.  Even though he leaked a Nintendo Direct happening soon, and several other events. There's nothing PlayStation on his schedule.

Wouldn't be terribly surprised if it ended up being a GoW state of play soon though.

There are quite a few things that shouldn't be too far off from being announced:
- lots of Returnal, Sackboy PC rumors
- Team Asobi's next game
- Arrowhead's next game
- Silent Hill remake that has been getting spoiled

There's also lot of other things that are up in the air for when they could be announced: (As in they could be soon, or they could be years out)
- Kojima's next game
- Potentially a From Software exclusive (Hermen has mentioned From Software as a partner a few times)
- Probably a few projects in PlayStation Studios that aren't that far off

The possibilities here are pretty much:
- There's a show soonish.
- Sony doesn't have that much for next year (which feels unlikely)
- Sony has other avenues for announcing these (perhaps a big PlayStation experience to end the year. Or it could just be a few blog posts, a surprise appearance at TGS, etc.)

I wonder if announcing big games as a suprise is the best thing to do anymore.

Ubisoft made an online show and said the future installments of AC was there. And I wonder if more companies would take that approach going forward.

For example Sony could announce a stare of play and detail that Naughty Dogs or GG next game would be shown there.

I can understand people like suprises and suprises announcements. But does every big game reveal need to be a suprise?

i was going to agree with legend.  20 minutes and 10 games means,.. don't expect an E3 show like you had listed.   at most there will be 1 big game and since they specifically mention psvr 2 my best bet would be something astro bot related.

there will be at least a few indie level games in that list of 10 especially for anything announced for psvr 2.  don't get your hopes up too much.   little devil inside was originally dated for 2022 so i'm thinking it gets a formal release date here.   50/50 that it gets the "stray" treatment and releases day-1 on ps extra.

in the current climate the better question is "can any game reveal be a surprise?!?!"

we've seen a trend this year that i think will continue.  the BIGGEST games in the industry aren't announced as part of a show.  they get something along the lines of a tweet inviting you to attend a game specific revel.    a lot of video games cannot be successful in that model but ND, santa monica, assassins creeed, GTA, ect can be very very successful in that model.

this kind of announcement will generate a lot more buzz then something like "here you go guys,.. a metroid 4 logo...." or something like "here's a CGI trailer for the next fable but please don't ask any more questions because despite it being announced more than 2 years ago we're still not ready to talk about it and oh btw,.. we've got 15 other CGI trailers to ensure information overload makes this announcement truly unmemorable so that the only discussion about the game you'll have over the next 5 years is 'what happed to fable,.. it must be in development hell' "

I wouldn't have searched it out but during the livestream it was too tempting.

So what are the impressions on the starwars VR game? I think that can be huge if its fun. The graphics were kinda trash though

Last two years Sony had a Showcase in early September:
2020 September 16 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iTvbM-W7dD0&ab_channel=GameSpot)
2021 September 9 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T5VtfD2i3rc&t=1818s&ab_channel=PlayStation)

Emboldened by recent leaks, I'm going to predict that there will similarly be a showcase this September.

First the date:
I'm going to predict it will be on the 15th. (I will end up being wrong on this, I am sure.)

Second, some contents:

I'm going to predict that this showcase will have only 1 or 2 first party surprises and a handful of partner games.
the thing about blind faith on the internet,.. easy to Necro bump....

Nice bump. Made me think their e3 show would just be a state of play >:(

and I believe it still won't.  I put my "rules" into that other thread as I have 100% confidence that Sony will have another show and soon.  I just don't believe Sony is going for the "showcase" format any more.
