From sheepysheep on era, thanks! This month was 4 weeks, while last year it was 5. Comparing results by weekly average:

2019
NSW: 284K / 4 = 71,000
PS4: 195K / 4 = 48,750
XB1: 101K / 4 = 25,250

2018
NSW: 275K / 5 = 55,000
PS4: 254K / 5 = 50,800
XB1: 235K / 5 = 47,000

Brilliant performance from Switch, a great start to the year. Also good for PS4 being almost flat on a week average basis. And well, xb1, it was expected but yeah that's bad.

Didn't xb1's price drop end up being permanent?

Very good for Switch and ps4. A bit surprised by the low ps4 drop tbh.

Yes, which is why this is so bad.

PS4 picked up at the end of the month apparently, probably due to RE2 and KH3. But yes, doubling XB1 while being more expensive is great. Everyone interested in XB1 bought it during the holidays it seems. Sony's lack of deals in December will pay off for them early in the year.

That's the second lowest month ever for XB1 by the way, although it should be noted that Jan is usually a fairly bad month for xbox and last year's was unusually high for it. XB1's lowest month was its 77k May 2014, before the kinect-less SKU launched.

That's actually not PS4's worst January either, Jan 2015 was 3k lower. So PS4 is still holding well.

And this is a new January record for this gen, set by Switch, beating PS4's Jan 2014 of 271k.

Just imagine the global sales for XB1 this month. Must be under 200k...

Yes, XB1 is almost dead at this point. This was with the X on a $100 price cut all month and the S with $50 at the end of the month, so its not like a price cut could really save it. I think it has no chance to make it to 50M now, no way it sells 9M more after selling 6-7M last year and this year being way down already. Seems like it'll be closer to 45M lifetime, only just over half of 360.

I can see MS announcing their next gen console this year, they might have to.

If we extrapolate using LT sales estimates then we get WW for this month/ 4 week period:

Switch 725k
PS4 625k
XB1 170k

And then we consider that PS4 and Switch actually did better comparatively in Japan than normal so they are probably higher, meanwhile XB1 was boosted in the US by price cuts, so its probably lower. Yeah.. ouch.

ethomaz

PS4 did hold better than I expected after the doom December.

Legend

Xbox should have an ok year with Ori 2 and Gears 5.

Also is Halo Infinite confirmed for xbox 1? It's weird feeling like this gen is starting to finish.

Cute Pikachu

Switch 2019 January outsold last January which had an extra week.

We also learned that KH3 is >1M, and behind FFXV as Square Enix's second biggest launch ever.

GTAV still trucking lol. Ridiculous

Someone on Era made this and it really illustrates the X vs. Kinect boosts. Kinect was so much better for HW sales than the X has been, it would seem.

It was hard explaining this earlier in the gen when people assumed Xbox 1 would sell ~90 million since it was tracking similarly to 360.

Kinect was unbelievably huge and was essentially an outlier with 360. There was never a reason to expect a similar mid gen bump for Xbox 1.

Also is there a graph that includes PS3 and PS4 with 360 and XB1? It would be cool to see if Kinect improved PS3 sales slightly and if Fortnight might be more responsible for XB1's strong year 5 than XB1X.

I made them just for you. PS3 is the perfect sales curve, although it is a little low. X360 during the kinect years was kind of a freak of nature.
