Just confirming it is a Japan problem, PS5 software sales are 11% ahead of PS4 launch aligned, when HW is only 4% ahead.

Well they don't have to "dedicate" it to Japan.
I'd love for them to try making a game like Final Fantasy, or more Bloodborne. Something that's definitely Japanese, but still pretty popular in the West.

But their western first party games practically do better in Japan than their Japanese ones. So understandably, it's hard to justify trying to do that.

On the other hand, Sony Music seemingly knows how to make games for Japan. SIE hasn't had the same kind of success, and it's not completely from a lack of trying. The market has been moving over to handhelds/mobile for a while, and SIE is investing in the things they've been able to be successful in.
Yeah for sure, more games like Bloodborne would have been great. And as the above chart shows Ghost was actually one of the top sellers in Japan last year, so it doesn't have to be games made in Japan.

Poor for RE Village in Japan, I think it roughly lines up with UK physical in terms of % down from other recent REs. Big difference though is that PS4:PS5 being 3:1 in Japan when in the UK it was 1.6:1 in PS5's favour.

Actually I was wrong, this is worse compared to recent REs than the UK performance.

Japan market just sucks, like I said  ;D

Okay so we got new info that XBS was in fact up month-on-month for April in the UK.

So here goes again:

373k consoles were sold in Jan+Feb (with 150k+ in Jan and 200k+ in Feb) with PS5 and Switch being neck-and-neck by the end of it (within a few hundred units, Switch slightly ahead). Jan 2020 was about 60k, Feb 2020 was about 70k total units sold, with Switch a fairly comfortable #1 both those months last year. Switch was +21% YoY in Jan 2021 and +80% YTD after Feb, pointing to a huge Feb for Switch, PS5 we found out was about 2k ahead in Feb and about 3k behind in Jan (vs Switch). Xbox stock was also "low" for Feb. So, I estimated this for those months:

Jan 2021: XBS ~60k, Switch ~50k, PS5 ~47k
Feb 2021: PS5 ~87k, Switch ~85k, XBS ~25k

Then March had 217k sales with PS5 being by far #1 and having its second best month (above Feb and Dec). Series X/S also had a good month and overtook Switch into second. Switch is back down to only +14% YTD after March, so not a particularly high month. March 2020 saw 235k consoles sold in total but we don't know any kind of breakdown for the individual consoles. Then in April (2021) we saw ~90-95k total sales with Switch "comfortably" #1, XBS being up in April compared to March and PS5 having basically a 0 month. So I estimate roughly:

March 2021: PS5 ~135k, XBS ~35k, Switch ~35k
April 2021: Switch ~45k, XBS ~40k, PS5 ~5k

Rough total so far in 2021 (Total of ~680k consoles sold): PS5 ~270k, Switch ~215k, XBS ~ 160k, Others (mostly PS4) ~35k.

Ohh mass effect released with 68% sales split on PS4. Another skewed PS game release

We should start making a list to see if there is really something to this theory

Though 68% is close to the install base ratio PS has, but ME as a franchise is more tied with xbox

Are PS sales making up for it?
Do Xbox games have better legs?  (Ie people are buying games as they go off service)

probably just a case of only looking at the data that supports the view they want to be true.   the sales ratio of recent games heavily favors playstation if far excess to console sales ratio.  it's a clear indications to me of games sales being depressed on xbox.    ...but maybe they are deciding that its just playstation is having "excessive" sales and somehow gamepass is the reason.

i don't see any logical arguments here but far too many analysts use data to support their view instead of forming their view based on the data.

Yeah I'd love to see the data that proves this. A statement alone on the matter means nothing if the data isn't presented

Gears 5 bombed and was on GP day 1, thats one big case. Recent UK sales split suggest GP is hurting day 1 sales of games on xbox.
