If I remember correctly, the TrueDepth sensor is an infrared structured light projector and an infrared camera, similar to the original Kinect. The advantage is that it has a lot more detail than the LiDAR, but it works only in very short distances and struggles when there is a lot of sunlight, washing out the infrared light. Is this accurate?
The LiDAR sensor is a time-of-flight camera, so a different type of technology. It works with longer distances, it's less noisy than the TrueDepth (still a bit noisy, though), and doesn't have as many issues with sunlight, but the resolution is lower.
The result you get from both is not really what you get from the sensor, as they are both enhanced using ML. This is especially noticeable when using the rear sensors, with better (and more) cameras (in fact, if you cover the main camera you will see how depth maps are suddenly terrible).
