Sony is stronger than ever
PS4 is catching up to Wii again and will surpass it in LTD sales in about one year:

Also here is a very interesting chart showing the incredible growth of PSN this generation for Sony:

That 6th and 7th year comparison will be amazing
Crazy numbers.
I expected PS4 to be noticeably down for the full year since 2016 had their big exclusives. Do we have exact numbers to know if it's slightly up or slightly down?

With all the games releasing in 2018, it's incredibly likely it'll be up yoy. Should definitely outpace Wii for ltd by 2019.
2018 seems like it'll be the PS4 peak year though.

In terms of sell through in the calender year, PS4 was up 3 million in 2017 over 2016. Shipped was about the same.

Yeah they overstocked thetchannels a bit at the end of 2016
Q3 was insane. That's 16 Million Consoles Shipped between Sony and Nintendo in the final 3 months.

PS4 making huge profits. one can see why they decided to go for paid online subs. this gen will probably be more profitable than PS1 and PS2 combined. we still have till 2019 at the very earliest till PS5 appears, and we will most likely see it at 2020. network and software sales will continue to soar. and Sony has a huge lineup of games that can bring in a lot of profit (TLoU, Detroit, GoW, Days Gone, Spiderman, Death Stranding) while other software titles that can also be profitable and help the bottom line like ghost of tutshima, bloodborne 2 (its coming! believe!), shadow of the colossus, and maybe even Dreams.

It makes you wonder if Sony would want to delay PS5 as long as possible and keep this gravy train rolling, or jump into next gen asap and hope the momentum carries over.

No need to rush it
I think earliest they go is 2020, but I do kind of hope they go 2021. Even 2020 gives ps4 a good lifespan.

But you really really don't want a wii u situation. If PS4 all of a sudden starts losing steam, PS5 can't still be 2 years out.
I hope PS5 is years away but I wouldn't be surprised if it's 2019 either.

I doubt it because this year will likely be fudgy massive for PS4 again. And next year has TLOU 2 and Death Stranding hopefully. 2020 seems the most plausible. 2019 would be a huge surprise to me.

PS4 came out the same year TLOU, GOW Ascension, and Beyond released.

True, I guess we shall see. If it's coming next year lets hope the rumor mill starts up soon. lol

Yeah PS4 had rumors for years. Even PS4 Pro had rumors about a year before release. If we don't get any big rumors by the end of the year, 2019 isn't happening.
I don't want to have to buy a new PS too soon. 2020 or later would make most people the happiest I think. The only anger is if MS beats them to it and steals audience, but with X only just releasing that seems unlikely.
Aiming for 2020 seems like the right thing to do for Sony, PS4 is still going to be doing very well at that point and they don't want to cut it too short. They can always delay to 2021 if PS4 is still doing really well for them and there's no movement from MS. Switch showed that you don't need much time between announcement and release for a great launch of a console.

Lol Sony probably have it all figured out. I doubt they think it's everlasting
Each Sony Gen has been a year longer than the last. Ps5 will launch in 2021.
