Title: Vizioneck Halloween T.V. Thread
Post by: darkknightkryta on Oct 15, 2014, 02:57 AM
So Halloween is right around the corner.  I started watching old Simpsons Halloween episodes.  I started at the first halloween special.  I'm going to watch an episode a night.  Maybe more, depending if I wanna check out newer episodes.  I'm also gonna try to catch The Halloween Tree.  What are you all watching?

The Walking Dead.
Will there be a movie thread too?

The Walking Dead.
Will there be a movie thread too?

Maybe, I don't mind keeping it here.  I was thinking of mentioning that I was planning to watch Halloween, the first.  Plus a lot of classics are on T.V. now anyways.

But so far I've been watching The Walking Dead and AVGN Cinemassacre Monster Madness 2014.

I'm not sure if I should mention it in the anime thread, but what anime would suit the bill for Halloween?  I only really have Princess Resurrection and Death Note.

Each season is a different story, and they're all horror. The current season is called Freak Show for instance.

The first one was good. The second one was missing the giant lady. Which made no sense since they were still at her house from the first special.

I started watching Persona 4 (Not Golden).  Every bit as good as the game.  I even started watching a really old anime.  Ghost Sweeper Mikami.  So far it's been pretty funny.  How's everyone else doing?  Probably going to catch an episode of Soul Eater before I turn in for the night.  Gonna add Another and Highschool of the Dead for another night.

Been watching Cinemassacre movie reviews - nothing else though ;(.

No timez.

Might watch some movies this upcoming weekend since I'll be off from work on both Sat and Sun this week.

I watched the adems family.

That was a good flick.  The Canadian version of Nickelodeon, YTV, used to show that every October.  Now that I'm remembering they used to show some good flicks.  Poltergeist was one of them.  Thanks Mike, I completely forgot to check up on YTV.  They're going to show some good stuff next week.  BeetleJuice is one of them.

Title: Re: Vizioneck Halloween T.V. Thread
Post by: darkknightkryta on Oct 30, 2014, 03:09 AM

Who is your provider?

Rogers.  But it doesn't work like that.  Canadian stations up here license U.S. content and show it up here.  Plus there's no more equivalencies anymore so it's become a free for all.  Like before, only one channel would get Fox stuff.  Now it's all over the place.  So I don't know who licenses FX stuff up here.  Plus they may just keep it to FX Canada, which I don't have.

I put a few in the poll ;)

I personally recommend: Persona 4 and Soul Eater

Others to note:
Another (Pretty creepy, but not too scary)
Corpse Party (Pretty disturbing)
Death Note
Rosario Vampire (This is a better read than watch)
Tokyo Ghoul (Only watched a few episodes, but it was decent)
Witch Hunter Robin (Kinda like X-files)

@BasilZero has a few more

Doing this a bit earlier, I normally wait for after Thanksgiving here, but between the cloudy, dreary weather, and me having nothing to do while I was putting my clothes away, I started watching Castlevania anime.  Or rather, I finished the first season.  I liked it.  I didn't like the music, and the first episode needed to be like, 2 instead of 1.  But it was good.

Thanksgiving is tomorrow in Canada.

I'm gonna pick up stranger things again after I got bored with the start of season 2. I guess that's kind of halloweeny.

Is it a thing in america to watch halloween tv and films in October? Here people may watch a scary movie or something on the 31st if they've got nothing better to do but that's about it.

Probably not.  I just really like Halloween and there's so many games/movies/shows etc that help set the mood.  I can play Resident Evil in the summer when its bright and sunny, or I can play Resident Evil near Halloween time when it's dark and gloomy.  Helps set the mood.

I'm beginning to hate netflix's overzealous cancelation policy.  I love new IP but I loathe when shows I love are cancelled after 8 or 16 episodes.  it's starting to feel like there is no point in getting invested into a good show.

Yeah, I just saw they cancelled Glow.  Weird since like, a lot of old shows found new life from binge watching on Netflix, and now Netflix isn't even giving their own shows a chance for that.

But back on topic.  Any new horror shows out this season?

not just glow.  altered carbon, sabrina, fuller house, patriot act, the dark crystal.   a ton more really but canceled after 1 season feels less offensive than canceled after 2.  i really like teenage bounty hunters and spinning out.  the really annoying thing about spinning out is they canceled it the day it was released.

with seasons on netflix being soo short if netflix doesn't think a show is worth 3 seasons they just shouldn't even make the show.

..also they send literally every IP out the door with no advertising (except stranger things) and their policy is to cut a show if it hasn't reached a certain level of success after just 28 days.   feels like they are squandering their successes away.

i'm watching ratched.  pretty good so far.

So last year, I stumbled upon an episode of Simpsons that wasn't Treehouse of Horrors.  It was called "Halloween of Horrors".  Season 27, episode 4.  It was honestly one of the best episodes Simpsons I watched.  Nothing outrageous, just a regular episode of Simpsons that also doubles up as a Halloween special.  It was also on point, like almost as good as anything they did in season 4.  I normally watch Treehouse of Horrors 1-7, since they're timeless, but Halloween of Horrors has been added to the list.

One thing that bugs me about Sabrina is how they handled Salem.  They first show him off as an imp. They have him be badass in that pumpkin patch at the beginning.  He saved her from her initiation.  Then they stopped.  He just became a useless cat.

They should never have cancelled Ash vs Evil Dead.  That show is over the top greatness.

I'm getting the itch to watch Buffy the Vampire Slayer.  I'm looking at the DVD set for 150 cad.  I'm not sure if I'll pull the trigger.  I like the box art more in the 2010 set, but I can't find that set new anymore and the used sets are pretty beat up on ebay.

I remember when I was growing up, I liked Angel more than Buffy.  But I have no want to watch Angel.  I'd rather watch Buffy.  But I don't think I'd be able to watch Buffy after season 4... I think anyways.  It got off the rails after they graduated and went to College, whatever season that was.  As an aside, I felt the same about Hercules and Xena.  I used to like Xena more, but I can't sit through an episode of it anymore, I'd rather watch Hercules.

Gonna probably finish Chilling Adventures of Sabrina this year and Ash vs Evil Dead.  Then round out with Treehouse of Horrors.  Thinking about it, I think I might go look for Simpsons DVDs with those Buffy sets.

Are the Prime episodes that trashy HD version where it wasn't colour graded and smudged to the point of losing all details?  I also can't remember if that version was cropped or not.  If ti was cropped, it would make it all the more worse.

I managed to find some A.I. upscaled version of the DVDs out there on the interwebs.  There's some weird compression going on with it, so it's still smudgy, but at least it's colour graded.

Watched this year's Simpson's Treehouse of Horror.  Wasn't really good until The Ring parody.

It's the Digital Noise Reduction they're using.  They were really aggressive with it.  It smudged out all details.  Defeats the purpose of having it in HD, Buffy was just done really bad.  Regular T.V. shows captured off of 16/32 mm film look fantastic at 1080p as long as they don't destroy it with noise reduction.  60s Batman and Star Trek TNG are great examples of recapturing film in HD.

i kind of feel the opposite.   there are soooo many halloween specials.   pretty much every kids show has one.   the difference is these days there are dozens of places to watch TV so none of them are "special" or have any cultural impact.  it's the opposite of the days when literally everyone had to watch live TV,.. there was only 1 new halloween show a year and it got promoted to high heaven and everyone watched it.

off the top of my head:

Disney+
Last year they had the haunted mansion Muppets special and there was a lego star wars thing.
this year they had hocus pocus 2 and there is at least 1 other movie i saw getting promoted

NetFlix
i mean, each year they have at least 3-5 horror films/series launch in october.   i think the main event last year was nightbooks and the fear street trilogy.   i also remember sharkdog launching last year.  i cant remember when they released but captain underpants was good, spookly was good according to my kids, hubie halloween was good, they love super monsters halloween, and carson, and frankly a bunch of others i can't remember.

i just got back from Malaysia so i'm a bit out of the loop this year but so far i've watch the latest season of nailed it halloween and phantom pups.  i'm sure there are more.

i'm done now.  i don't watch the other services and i don't care to look it up.

in summary: there are more halloween specials then ever and because there are soo many none have a lasting cultural impact and thus they are quickly forgotten.

well everything I listed is within the last 2 years:
- hocus pocos 2
- muppet haunted mansion
- hubie Halloween
- captain underpants Halloween

...would be my top picks for your niece if she's in the 8-12 range that I'm assuming she is based on hotel Transylvania.

fear Street was good to if she's old enough for moderate horror.

I was about to type that I watched the new Ghostbusters movie.  Then I realized it wasn't on the poll.  Put in Owl House for you.  Caught up with it.  They had Luc make a backhanded comment about wanting 20 more episodes, so I guess you're right about the creator not being happy.  It didn't feel like anything was rushed though.  But I'm sure the season 3 specials will be rushed.

I think they've done a good job with it. I feel like it's required them to cut out any fat from the series.

Like season 2, there's a streak where like every other episode has a big reveal, that most series would have take like full seasons.

It's both great, and it's a shame that they don't have more freedom and more time to tell the story the way they want.

Yes, the comment about Eda asking if Luc wanted to go to the beach instead was pretty telling.  But you're right, it was too the point so it felt like nothing was cut out.  But I think the finale might be cut short.  3 40 minute specials?  That's only 6 episodes worth of story and it feels like they need 12 more.  So I think they were hoping for two 20 episode seasons for 2 and 3, which would have given them some buffer.

We've already got the first episode, was pretty darn good.

I cut the collector into a pumpkin this year.  I'll post photos at night when I have them lit up.

You've been watching American Horror Story these past few years no?  Or was that Pezus?

Worth watching?  Is it like Tales from the Crypt Keeper?

Got around to watching this year's Treehouse of Horrors.  I'll say, it's up there.  The throw away horror part with Marge and Maggie was probably the best skit.

Scooby-Doo on iTunes went on a good sale for Halloween.   8)

There's this weird early middle zone of Scooby Doo where it's hard to figure out what was going on. The first two series are just Scooby Doo Where Are You and The New Scooby-Doo Movies.

The next few shows are very mixed up.

The next show was originally broadcasted under like 4 different names, one of which was the original TV series that came out a decade earlier. And they've since called these 4 collections as if they are actually the 3rd show.

I vaguely remember Halloween town.  My nieces and nephew were visited with my sisters over the weekend.  I put on YTV here and they had the Loud House live action halloween special.  I can't say I saw much of it, but it wasn't good outside of the musical piece at the beginning.

I started up some shows.  Jujutsu Kaisen, which I've been waiting for this month to watch since I learned about it back in May.  Saw an episode of Ash vs Evil Dead, I'm still trying to figure out where I left off.  I tried watching Sabrina, but I have to find out where I left off too, since it's been like 3 years.  Saw Halloween of Horror for Simpsons on Monday.  It felt like the right time to kick off.  Still one of the best episodes of Simpsons I've seen.

I watched Friday the 13th for the first time ever last night.  Mind you, I was on my phone for a lot of it, but I enjoyed it.  Like, it's hard to put in to words, but it felt real.  It didn't feel like a movie.  I mean, it was a bit cheesy and it wasn't scary until near the end, but it wasn't excessive.  Versus movies made today which go overboard with everything.  I mean, I'm watching Halloween 3 on AMC right now and it's so goofy.  The music is loud and annoying.  Contrast to the first Halloween.  Same thing, that movie felt real, it felt like some crazy psycho was let lose.  Nothing was excessive.

Anyways, I had no idea Jason wasn't real and it was his mom O_O (Ending was ambiguous and kinda took me out of it.)

Watched Scream 6. Don't remember which scream I last watched so it was a bit confusing trying to figure out what was backstory for this film and what was just a recap of previous films.

Was fun though. Had a lot of unexpected stuff early on.

I was hoping Jujutsu Kaisen was going to be way more scary, but then they cut all the horror stuff out and went full shonen.  I wasted 20 episodes of ime :(.  I watched episode 2 of season 4 of Stranger Things.  Today I had the first 6 episodes of Treehouse of Horror playing.

Stranger things is fun.

Meanwhile I forgot how bad Army of darkness is. I watched it years ago as a kid and only remembered the fun parts. I've never seen Evil Dead so I tried watching Evil Dead 2 as well (first wasn't free) and I turned it off after a few minutes.
