Might sound like an obvious solution but it was a long journey to get here. My plan is to make the game feel almost like a regular rpg. Weapons are used to fight, food is used to eat, and so on and so forth. Buttons are contextual and do different things depending on what is currently happening. There are cool novel actions but overall it's designed to be approachable.

The secret sauce is that players can override this context on the fly. Eating a roll of bread at a feast but mad that a guest has fallen asleep? Switch from "food" context to "combat" context and pelt them with the roll from across the room.

Novice players don't need to worry about it while experienced players can be as unconventional as needed.
