I'm testing out larger icons on the left.

They space out the threads more which Kitler requested and I like.

They also allow the far left icon to actually become valuable.

We should give this option. :D
But not as default.

Alright!

I think the bar at the top of the table should be copied at the bottom as well. That way it encases the icons better. Agree?

When quoted it shows the amount of quotes in the reply/view collumn.

Clicking the new button takes you to the newest quote.

Looks good now.

Edit - I think the second icon is useless (http://vizioneck.com/forum/Themes/default/images/post/xx.gif)... it is the same for all posts... maybe it can be the old column instead this one... like (http://vizioneck.com/forum/Themes/default/images/topic/my_veryhot_poll.gif) (http://vizioneck.com/forum/Themes/default/images/topic/my_veryhot_post.gif)

always with the blaming of me.  xD

anyways, i like the icons.  pulls in your vizioneck art to the site with makes sense.

more suggestions:
1. kill the "new" icon thing at the end of the thread title.  i hates it.  clicking on those nice new icons it will take you to the newest post just like the "new" icon currently does or to the newest quote depending on thread status.  clicking on the thread title takes you to the OP.  a last post button exists in the lastest post column.
2. split the replies/views column into two.  new/posts and new/views.   populate with data like such: XX/YY   where XX is the number of new posts and YY is the total post count.  same with views.
3. i still have no idea what that second row of icons is for.  for me it is always the same icon expect when it was your face.  if it isn't getting  use kill it to make more room for thread titles and other useful information.

Forgot what I said... it is my end issue :P

I need to fix that... it is not showing the icon based in what you choose in the thread.

We need 10 icons though!

The 4 buttons mentioned before + the 4 arrows from the d-pad and L1 and R1. :P

I know, but you could perhaps mix Nintendo, SEGA, PlayStation and Xbox buttons? :D

I'll be waiting for that, greatness awaits!!  8)

There is no difference between the new and thread title link... both send you to the first post you didn't read yet... it is the better... go to OP will happen if you don't read any post in this thread.

I like the "new" it is informative... I want a "quote" too in purple for example.

The second row is for the custom icon you choose for the thread... it is not working in front page... works in the others places... fix needed.

also, my suggestion was the increase the font of the thread title compared to the author.  or maybe bold it.  make the thread title more important than the author to make it easier to read.

Right now since these changes need community feedback, no I'm not updating it.

However once we're finished yeah I'll copy the changes over. Should be obvious once I've done that ;)

what about removing the icon and using a colored border around the info box instead... I guess that would be rather replacing the colored b/g with an image, but you could use yellow for new posts, and blue for replies, red for hot topics... or I dunno what cause i'm not sure at all what any of these symbols mean

We tried something similar and it just looks horrible without redesigning the rest of the site with it.

Yellow means new post

Green means quote

Blue means sticky

Red means locked

Square means you have posted in the topic

Diamond means you have not posted in the topic.

the blue really pops compared to the green you choose.   make blue quotes and green stickies?   i think the point of the color is to draw your eye to the most important threads and that blue is just,..  too sexy.

We can switch them, but the blue "pin" icon is a problem then.

Get rid of those icons completely?

not sure that the pin icon being blue is that big of a deal.  i don't think i'd drop that.   i'm just saying,.. from a color wheel perspective green and yellow are very close so it can be difficult to distinguish them at a glance.  blue is further away so it pops more.

also, i noticed you moved the first/last post icons together.   daddy like but you might want to consider new art for them.  the art is kind of hard to read.  these are pretty universal,.. just as an example.

The title is about as small as you can get it while still being noticiably larger than the other text.

I like the bigger icons because they space everything out a bit and make it less intimidating.

Plus they're still pretty efficient. With 40px icons we can fit 20 threads in the space it takes vgchartz to fit 17.

Just a question... I checked and the Hot Topics shows the actual post icon and not the thread icon... I can change that if you wish.

IMO I do like the old text size and the icons at 30px but that is me ;)

Yeah it shows the icon from the last post instead of the first post.

Changing that would be great. As long as you're just in sources than nothing I've changed matters.

I'm not really liking the yellow icons on the left that show if there's unread posts in a thread. I'm on a smartphone so I zoom in to read the posts, and the icons are too far off to be on the screen. I'd rather they were in the position of the old New tags. I'm also colorblind, so a change in shape or something would be really helpful on the icons as well.

yeah i kinda like that idea... without a key new members aren't going to know what's going on... also just a simple color change to the bg is fairly effective i think

also I think it would look better if the b/g color behind the thread title and image were the same

yeah its background color would be the same. just change the yellow "new" icon that used to appear next to the thread to blue. keep the changes they have now which look good, but arent all that understandable.

ie: alt="sticky" alt="new post" alt="new reply" etc...

Post by: Legend on Aug 27, 2014, 03:53 PM

yeah its background color would be the same. just change the yellow "new" icon that used to appear next to the thread to blue. keep the changes they have now which look good, but arent all that understandable.

Yeah the new changes are "universal" but have a steep learning curve.

I'm going to turn back on the "new" image, then move over to the dev build and work on finetuning the design.

would it be possible to create a beta version of the site that the public could utilize and give input while still actually having all the stats be cumalitive.
ergo a separate area for the testing or an ...\beta\index.php that would be the same forum yet compile all stats and data together

Then if you have new posts it's yellow, and new quotes make it blue.

I like it, except for the "new" icon.

That icon could be great for training new users what the color means, but for experienced users it becomes visually annoying.

Are you planning on putting back the thread icons?

I'm not sure about both tbh.

Haha yeah all of these things are fairly easy to make optional.

The discussion right now is really what should be the default value for new users.

we had weeks of people making joke threads where a the thread title was suggestive but then the picks was the "non-dirty" interpretation of the phrase.  my thread had ~10 of the best big titty pics (yes nude) i could find and this gif.  lasted just over an hour before getting modded.

Title: Re: Let's Design the Index Page: Good?

I'd like topics I haven't posted in to have a gray diamond instead of a yellow diamond as it is confusing since the yellow "new" thing pops up only on topics I take part in with posting. Having yellow on all threads makes it more meaningless for myself.

Also the new icon shouldn't show up on topics / threads in which I don't participate .
Title: Re: Let's Design the Index Page: Good?
Post by: 7H3 on Aug 29, 2014, 02:19 PM
Spoiler for Hidden:
hmm I think like this:<br />diamond for new<br />square for read<br /><br />yellow for threads in which I have posted<br />gray for threads in which I haven't posted<br />blue and green as they are currently

well now that I understand the shapes and colors i'm not so sure about what's in the spoiler section... I'll think about it some more

I think the Sticky color is not matching yet.

For posts already read you can use:

White = Non-sticky
Gray = Sticky

After that we start with colors :D

PS. The new design grows on you but the green for sticks is yet off.

i'm winning!!

in software design they say the rule of a good web design is to watch the usage immediately following a change.   any change will give customers a negative reaction at first even if the changes are for the better.   after an adjustment period of a few days to a week with a good redesign customer usage will return to normal or increase.  poor redesigns will remain lower than previous.

i'm really glad to hear people are warming up to it.  i think the changes made at my suggestion are going to be really good long term.

wrt to what you wrote about posts you've read.  i was kind thinking maybe non-sticky should be more gray than white.  the white on black pops quite a bit and draws a fair amount of attention to it which is counter to the point of guiding users to new posts/topics.  not sure what to say about stickies,..  maybe you could go back to using blue for stickies and maybe purple for quote notification?   my only grip with green was it is pretty close to yellow and doesn't pop the way i think it should.

I personally like it.

With knowing I was the last poster, the thread is basically dead to me. No reason to go back to it.

With threads where I wasn't the new poster, I still might want to comment. Usually in the morning after waking up I read every new post, and then over the course of a few hours go back and post in the threads.

well you're the boss.  personally if i was going to respond i would have the first time i viewed a thread so any thread with no new post (be it mine or someone elses) is dead to me.  the darker gray makes it easier to ignore than the white.

you may already be well aware of this but...

...the front page has the filters for "show unread since last visit" and "show new replies".   those pages use the old front page layout.  probably should propagate the front page layout changes to those filters.  imo.

It is because it uses the standard forum template and not the Index Page one... this one is default for all boards.

Sorry for not getting to this sooner.

Updated all the pages and removed the old design everywhere.

It "visually" should all be up to date, however when clicking on the thread title in these other places it just brings you to the first post instead of the newest. I'll get to that later.
