...because that's the threshold of availability i'll need in order to buy one.  i figured by the other side of the holiday's it was be "easy enough" to acquire one for a internet savvy gamer.   currently the resale price is still over $1000 which is a good enough barometer to say i ain't going to find one "easy enough" for quite a while.

I thought April as well at first, but I'll go May to be different. I think it'll make it to being in stock for a bit in the first half of the year, by October it might last over a day, but then holiday will be sold out again.

Yeah, Series S has never been too hard to find if you want one. There's been quite a few occasions where its stayed in stock for days, and in Europe demand is pretty much met for it already. This is what I predicted, people don't really want series S right now. It needs games to come out for it.

i mean, its not a vision entirely without merit.  i am happy with netflix.  ...but will anyone argue that netflix is indusrty leading on the quality of their content?   i wouldn't.  

i just think to make it viable ms would need to have a monopoly on gaming.  ..as in like litterally 100% of console/pc gamers would need to be subscribed to their service.  i don't like that idea because quality content would die out.

Series S could be big.  It's just in a weird spot. It's trying to sell to people who are a few years from wanting it, if they ever do.  And at that point those people might decide a Series X is a better buy anyways.

The issue with series S is that most people don't want to spend 300 on a gimped console. For 100 more you get a PS5 DE. And it seems infinitely more worth it. Specially that the xbox has nothing new to play. Spiderman and demouns souls are good system sellers. Retournal will come, so will ratchet, GT7 and horizon by the time Halo comes. Everything else from MS feels miles away, its just not worth it

Series X lasted over half an hour on the MS store last night. Looks like the X really is getting there. If you want one now you still have to be on the ball but you don't have to fight against bots and crashed websites anymore.

When I've been following it, target seems like the only ones where you have a chance. Since they sell them per store and you have to go and get them, scalpers and bots don't really have much of a chance.

i have no problem with the "go and get" aspect even if i have to drive 10 miles.   ...but i'd like to at least be able to buy it for "pick-up".  i'm not driving to target on the hopes i get there before the other 3 people that noticed stock is available get there first.



they had nintendo switch available for shipping.  i haven't seen one of those in a long while either.  i'm still mulling over the idea i get one for my sony for his b-day.  i still have a few months but since they are hard to get i should probably buy very early if it buy.   i'm just not sure if it is worth it because he's basically not liked anything we've played except the lego franchise.  we've played a bit of mario kart wii but only time trials because he hates racing with anyone else on the track.  he's not really liked platformers.  he's too young for zelda and smash.   so is it even worth it?  maybe he'd like animal crossing?!?   ...but on the other hand i'm literally out of games on playstation i can get him.

i wish there was enough games on switch to justify the purchase for myself.  it would make the decision a lot easier but i "favorited" every game i could even possibly see myself buying and i only got up to 18 and i'm pretty meh on most of them (especially at $60) and 2 of them are xbox games (ori).  i'd be so fudgy angry if i get animal crossing for my kid at $60 and he only plays it for 10 minutes.

well, i can't find it at other stores like target but if they were to get stock and it is still in stock at best buy i can't imagine there would be a big run on sales at target.   clearly most of the market is not as up-to-date as myself on the current stock availability of series s.  but at the same time it has been 12 hours so unless best buy got millions of units (very unlikely) the sales rate must be quite slow so at the very, very least no scalper is willing to buy them anymore.

Its not meeting demand by the usual criteria yet but its certainly close. If you want a Series S and you haven't got one yet at this point its all on you, there's been plenty of good chances.

I think within a month we'll be seeing series S permanently in stock.

16 hours and counting and these are day time hours now not middle of the night hours.  i'm getting very concerned...

7nm is gonna be in short supply for at least the rest of 2021. If any of them pay up to get more of the share of wafers being produced, the others become harder to find. Its kind of a perfect storm of COVID causing issues in the chain and lots of new popular tech launching needing 7nm at the same time.

Doubtful.  

PS5 demand is way, way higher, and it's much harder to make the chips.  

AMD and MS said things aren't going to change by much until the second half of the year or later.

As xev says manufacturing chips is hard in general right now. I don't think Microsoft would be paying to make more xboxs than they need so if series s is coming around, feels like good odds series x and PS5 will be similar. Or series s will go back into a near impossible to find item.

no one knows exactly where demand is until it is met.  ms will lower series s production if manufacturing is higher than demand but it is in ms's best interest to have the console available for purchase and not impossible to find.

Nah. Series X might, PS5 is still very hard to get. I think my prediction of May to be in the kind of state Series S is currently in won't be far off. And if its wrong it'll be too early.

Series S demand is just much lower. Its already in good supply in countries like Spain where we know its 1/3 of XBS combined sales which are roughly matching XB1. And it lasted over a week on amazon UK before release with its first/ second round of stock allocation.

Put in other terms, sell through for each at the end of Dec was approx.:

PS5d 900k
Series S 1.1M
Series X 2.2M
PS5 3.5M

And Series S is the only one like this. Series X is getting closer, like when I said it lasted an hour on the MS store. PS5 though, both models, is way way off. Despite PS5 being by far the SKU with the most shipped it still sells out within minutes/ seconds everywhere, way faster than either xbox console.

PS5d has seen approximately similar supply to series S but is probably the most supply constrained out of them all right now.

TLDR: Xbox demand is very different so you can't really use it to judge anything about PS5. Series S itself is a special case.

It is an interesting problem, they have clearly overestimated Series S demand. They're producing them in 2:1 ratio but demand seems more like the 4:1 that Playstation seem to have nailed. Perhaps they just keep the S roughly constant and if there's any future ramping to do, focus it on X.

MS could benefit from making more systems, if people get tired of waiting for a PS5, they might figure that some of them will buy a XSX.

In an ideal market, every system would be equally hard to find as every player perfectly optimizes.

Current chip manufacturing however is far from ideal so yeah, a lot of things can be at play. If Microsoft over estimated demand or if Microsoft is actively harming Sony by using up supply chains, then anything can happen.

Yes ps5 demand doesn't matter as long as it was predicted and stays consistent. That's not to say the combined demand from every console is less then supply.

They've had stock here multiple times a week since pretty much September. You just gotta get in the queue before stock goes up and then they randomise the order so you might get near the front and get a chance.

Walmart drops a bunch every 10 mins for about an hour, its a weird system. People use a direct add to cart link to be able to buy it and that seems to be the only way to beat the crowd.

I probably could have gotten a ps5 today but decided against it. target had stock this morning for in store pick up "in my area".  

I saw two stores had stock for a total of 15 units (disc, no DE) but ultimately I decided a 1.5 hour drive (round trip) was too far. 

it fully sold out about 5 minutes later.

makes me happy to see the series s struggle.  I don't like the idea of that lower spec limiting what next gen can do.

Series S still in stock on amazon UK, now lasted 6 full days. It has still yet to sell close to what PS5 managed in a few minutes when they went up at the same time last Wed morning.

Its not selling badly though, currently sitting at #4 on the hourly chart.

See, I like the idea of the series S originally. A lowered power machine thats cheaper, but plays the games at lower res. But 4tf is just too low. It should have been 6/7. It would have been so much more appealing then, and people could have trusted in its performance.

my often mentioned co-op friend really wanted a ps5 because his controller/headset were dying and he didn't want to replace them on ps4.  he took to twitter notifications/ect. and after 2 months of what can only be called hard labor he got one for himself.    apparently he just kept at it and this weekend he tells me he got a twitter alert at 2:30 in the morning for amazon re-stocking and he bought it and shipped it to my address.

so yeah.  supposed to be here tuesday a over a month before my desired R&C release.   xD

i voted june.  at this point i think we could all easily be wrong and it goes past july.  in order to get to "hours" we need to first get to "hour".   we seem to still be at the "instantaneously sold out" mark for any stock that doesn't go live at 2:30 am.

The demans is crazy. Sony needs to make more somehow and seize this opportunity. They could sell 20+ million this year if they have the stock.

My PS5 has turned itself off while in rest mode twice, no other problems with it. And the turning off wasn't any issue, it didn't boot in safe mode or anything, it was just off.

Yeah, it was the same here, except I think it happened like 3 times.
I didn't even realize it crashed the first two times.  

It went from rest mode to shutdown, and the controller was having some issues with reconnecting.  It wasn't terrible at all.

First one, welcome to PS4->PS5 save transfers, it all sucks.

Second one as Pi said is a setting which is enabled by default, Switch does the same thing as well.

Might as well continue with this thread. Mid-May and the situation is still exactly the same, you basically can't get a PS5 without using a bot or an insider method found on twitter.

Series S has just hit a full 10 day streak of being in stock on amazon UK though and its a similar story in the rest of Europe. I think that pretty much everywhere outside of the US the Series S is no longer stock limited.

Apparently retailers in countries like Germany and Poland are already doing offers on Series S, discounts below RRP or including games. And apparently they're still having to advertise these offers on TV to get them to move.

I really expected Series S to be a hot item when it was announced, I know those aren't good countries for xbox, but doing it this early with so few of them already sold is shocking.

I now really think it will for PS5. Series X I'd be shocked if it keeps selling out rapidly throughout the whole year, maybe in the US it could stay that way but certainly not anywhere else.

the problem with the series S is it isn't entirely a 'next gen' console.   kind of yes but also kind of no.  sony was right,.. most people don't want to plop down a bunch of money and get the inferior product. 

if ps5 remains impossible to find and series x is available i'll bet a lot of prospective ps5 buyers would get a series x as "only reliable way to get a next gen console" but not a series s.   series s will only sell to those that actually want a series s.   it's not a viable alternative to a series x or ps5.   

and yes,.. friends >>>>> other things.   soo much of gaming is a online social experience these days.   buying the opposite console as your friends makes absolutely no sense at all.  matters more than cost, individual games, QoL features, ect.   peer pressure and the FOMO is a much more powerful motivator.

PS5, PS5d and XSX all came in stock at the same time this morning. The amount they sold was in that order judging by the best sellers chart (PS5 #1, PS5d #2, XSX #6). Lets see when the monthly chart updates later if they sold more in minutes than the S did in almost 3 weeks.

Series S could have a comeback if financial struggles get way worse post covid, but hopefully that doesn't happen.

Its just not an appealing console. I get it, next gen gaming at a budget price. But its clear demand for proper next gen gaming is extremely high.

I'll most likely get a series S down the line, just to play Bethesda games that MS so graciously did a money hat with.

it is unlikely I will do that, I never played a Bethesda game to begin with but my Bethesda fanatic coop buddy had a interesting view to me.  it was, "who cares it is still coming to PC.  without mods you aren't even playing the game right anyways."

Xbox supports mods and with them now owning Bethesda I can only see that expanding. I played Skyrim on Series X and it has almost all of the same mods as PC. Doesn't have the legally questionable ones but it has unofficial patches, total conversions, cheats, weebo outfits, etc.


Anti-chamber is great but it's getting old! You need to play it before it becomes too outdated. I think I'll replay it today.

I want an 150$ series S. I doubt the series X will ever hit that price point. But I can see the series s hitting that on a sale or something. It would be 50% of its launch price, and consoles reach that usually. Again, its just for Bethesda games, I might play a few of their other exclusives like gears or halo (even though the new halos seem extremely unappealing now).

Yeah its mad. Situation in the UK is still the same too. Series S is still permanently in stock although sales seem to have picked up a bit. Ps5 still only lasts < 5 minutes whenever its in stock and manages to outsell the S in just two restocks for the whole month. Same for the X.

Number 18 for the month is good for the S and its still climbing the yearly rankings, its just that demand is clearly so much higher for the others. I do wonder how much S could be selling if it sold out instantly like the others, sell-through for xbox is probably falling behind shipped now due to this (and them pushing the S more), while PS5 will still have sell through about the same as shipped worldwide.

yeah, Pi is right.   everything expect the switch lite became difficult to find as soon as the lock down happened.  i haven't really been paying attention to ps4 xbox one but it would make sense that with limited manufacturing capabilities that they'd be prioritizing the next gen hardware.
