AC Valhalla is the christmas #1 in the UK after a bump in sales this week, due to a sale price of £39.99 for the limited edition (basically half launch price for the LE and the cheapest the game has been).

Cyberpunk physical falls 80% in its second week, landing at #3, which is a fairly standard drop for a big release, perhaps larger than average but not enough to be a sign of bad WOM on its own. However, considering its christmas you would normally have expected a much better second week drop. About 48k sales for second week.

Bloomberg - Are you a robot?

So far, Sony appears to be seeing sales of about one game for every three devices -- compelling evidence scalpers are hoarding the consoles. First-month estimates from Japan's Famitsu show Sony sold around 213,000 PlayStation 5 consoles in the country, while the top three titles sold less than 63,000, excluding digital downloads.

"The PlayStation 5 could miss a critical chance to get into a good hardware-software upward spiral," said Kazunori Ito of Morningstar Research. "The peak of the platform will likely be low and the platform's total revenue earned won't be as strong as we hoped for."

This is a bizarrely bad article from Bloomberg.

Bloomberg - Are you a robot?

This is a bizarrely bad article from Bloomberg.

They mention "excluding digital downloads" as if they just wanted to cover their dog so people wouldn't comment saying it. But digital downloads completely break down this entire argument, and they didn't mention the digital console.

The physical console sold 172k at the time of that, so the top 3 games actually sold more like 37% of console base. Then that's just the top three, the rest of the games combined should make up a good chunk, probably bumping it to >50%. Then that's just physical, digital ratio for playstation is over 50% nowadays, even in Japan. Then you also consider that there's a free game - made in Japan - installed for free with each console. And of course there's BC with great stuff like the PS+ collection.

There's no problem here at all. Software sales for PS5 could be relatively stronger than PS4 for all we know.

Hardware will struggle in Japan, that's for sure. But PS3 and PS4 were the same, and PS5 will be expected to continue that small decline anyway. But we don't have any indication of that yet, as PS5 still sells out instantly in Japan too.

Bloomberg has seemingly had a bad track record with PS5 in 2020. Pretty much every article has been negative yet so far the console is setting records. I echoed some of their sentiments at the time but I don't trust their accuracy unless Schreier is the one reporting.

They're comparing to the Switch, which had a major title (for the Japanese market) day 1 (Breath of the Wild).  Which sold a huge portion of all games on Switch for launch week.
Switch is also going to be more physical heavy.

It's just an absurd point of comparison.

Not to mention they tap on the yield issue again in this article.

And they're trying to make a trend out of Japan for the global market which is absurd.

PS5 will have a hard time in Japan but we knew that.

It's very strange. Bloomberg used to be considered incredibly reliable but they have had two articles flat out denied by MS and Sony.  And a few other articles that were partially based on the rejected ones.

This one a competent arm chair analyst could point out there are issues with their examples.

Yeah Switch is a terrible point of comparison, it would probably have to sell double the physical copies to reach the same total as PS5 at launch, there's no BC, wasn't anything like PS+. All there was to do was buy a couple of the big new games, and almost everyone did buy it physically.

And yeah, Japan is an extremely different market to the rest of the world for consoles, now more than ever before. Its not really worth the effort for Sony, PS only sells super well when a set few big franchises release, and the market is very picky with new releases. Sony very rightly focus on the rest of the world for launch, Japan gets what it gets.

Its that same writer, Mochizuki. All of the bad articles have been from him.

13mil sales for Cyberpunk (as of 20th Dec). Includes refunds, but only ones direct with CDPR. So after PSN and XBL and store refunds are taken into account, I don't see it going past 15m sales for quite a while.

Still amazing numbers for a game, possibly the third biggest game launch ever.

Yeah I did not expect XBS to drop this low this quickly. I wonder if it will go back up a bit soon.

PS5 is a bit better but still terrible for December. If 17k is the baseline it can maintain all the way through next year that'd be okay though. With the occasional big boosts from games and a decent holiday bump that'd be a good first full year.

Top 10 sellers in the UK in 2020:

 01. FIFA 21 - 2.182.694 units
 02. Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War - 1.420.353
 03. Grand Theft Auto V - 1.127.222
 04. FIFA 20 - 903.810
 05. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare - 897,350
 06. Animal Crossing: New Horizons* - 810.462
 07. Assassin's Creed Valhalla - 665.815
 08. The Last of Us: Part II -  539,247
 09. NBA 2K20 - 481.507
 10. Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Siege - 436.957

Includes digital data, except for Animal Crossing: New Horizons (and all Nintendo games)

So COD and ACV were neck and neck physically, but this shows that COD had monster digital sales while AC digital ratio was less than half. GTAV still top 3 is hilarious, and ACNH reaching #6 with no digital is really good. TLOU2 absolutely has had terrible legs too, sad to see.

Spain week 50 sales:

Switch: 24.000
 PlayStation 5: 10.250 (9800 PS5, 450 PS5 DE) [73.3k LTD]
 PlayStation 4: 3.900
 Xbox Series X/S: 3650 (2.400 S, 1250 X) [22k LTD]
 Xbox One: 300

Series S is in good stock and in fact already went on sale at GAME in Spain. Rest are supply constrained.

There's a few weeks of sales left to get estimates for, but its safe to say XBS will match XB1 2013 while PS5 will be way down on PS4 (they were 30k and 150k).
