I need to learn how they mixed humans with cgi so perfectly. Most movies just go 100% cgi to avoid this, like the first film.

Also I don't understand why so many people think the water is real. How the heck would that be cheaper when you still need a cgi blue person in it?

But actually it's now #9.

Yuuup. This notion that no one likes the franchise and that it was a novelty because of the tech and 3d being so revolutionizing on its first release was such asinine battleship, that a very loud vocal minority spouts online.  These are movies that the general population really like to see. And that can be seen in Way of Water's box office in just 3 weeks.

The only movies that have even done this well this fast is infinity war, endgame and no way home.

I believe its going to be sitting right under titanic at the end of its run.  Which if it actually does, james cameron having 3 of the top 4 grossing movies of all time is insane and no one should ever doubt cameron again.

I watched it Monday.  It was okay.  It was a generic family movie with good visuals ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I have no idea about the movie. So maybe we are talking about different things, or maybe this article is misleading.

But I thought they made a big deal about actually shooting scenes underwater. There's tons of articles about it.

Quote
The key to it was to actually shoot underwater and at the surface of the water so people were swimming properly, getting out of the water properly, diving in properly," Cameron said ahead of the film's release. "It looks real because the motion was real. And the emotion was real."

They shoot motion capture underwater. It looks like the pic in your link:

Yet people think this shot from the trailer was not cgi because it looks too good:
This non-CGI 4 second shot in Avatar: The Way of Water cost $4 million -  Solace in Cinemas

Here's one of many articles confused about it: This non-CGI 4 second shot in Avatar: The Way of Water cost $4 million - Solace in Cinemas

They made tons of real props for the movie including a mount for the actor of this scene, but it'd be so so so so so much harder to blend the real prop and real water with the cgi vs just replacing it all with cgi.

1.708 billion after this weekend. 2 billion is definitely locked I think. It had a better Saturday from estimates than New Year's Eve.

45 million weekend down from 63.4 last week. Gonna have good legs

I'm just happy we will get the full 5 movies now

Going to see avatar in Dolby cinema. Not 3d though. I asked one of my friends who lives right beside it if he wants to go see it but looks like I'm just watching myself. Oh well

All I can say is WOW for avatar. Yeah it's a pretty similar story to the first but holy crud the cgi is in a league of its own. I ended up changing to a 3d showing. Glad I did cause the depth it gave the image was amazing

sorry to hear you were so disappointed by it.  ...hate to say I told ya so.

Now sitting at 1.9 billion based on estimates through Monday on BOM. Crazy. I wasn't expecting it to hit 1.9 till next weekend. 2 billion now probably gonna be hit end of next weekend and titanic seems to maybe be in reach

Now passed No Way Home to be 6th of all time. Might pass infinity war force awakens by end of next weekend or so. Then it's on to passing titanic but that still may not happen. Might get close

Yeah I'm curious how much the titanic release will pull in next month. It might be a good nostalgia pull for people but who knows. It's probably gonna keep titanic above way of water but James Cameron wins all around

I'm tempted to go watch the re-release since I never saw it in theaters since I was like 5 or 6 when it first came out. And the last re-releases I never checked out
