Xbox One sales show the highest growth of the three major hardware platforms in the U.S. this year, and the Xbox One X in particular has been performing phenomenally... year-over-year growth like this at this point in the cycle has never been seen before, driven by launch of the Xbox One X and new content delivery efforts. It's a mid-generation turnaround the market's never seen before. This qualifies as phenomenal, even if not market leading.Click to expand...
The Xbox brand continues to gather more and more momentum. Next gen is going to be really interesting.

MOD EDIT:

The main point is that Xbox One sales in 2017 were lower than any other prior year in the US (excluding 2013). In 2018 the unit sales are more inline with 2015/16 which were the two peak years for the system. It remains to be seen whether Xbox One will have a record year, but it's still significantly up from last year.

It goes to show the impact that the Xbox One X release has had on Xbox One family sales in the US. The PS4 has seen a similar thing as well with sales notably up from last year.

Whilst there are multiple reasons why total sales are up, it is worth noting that One X and Pro are one of the main reasons.Click to expand...

Yep. Jan-Oct NPD for XB1 (PS4 for comparison sake):

2014: 1842k   (2789k)
2015: 2268k   (2615k)
2016: 2217k   (2422k)
2017: 1535k   (2696k)
2018: 2087k   (3055k)

2017 was bad for Xb1, that was a huge drop. With the X, its now roughly back to where it was before. I expect if it wants to stay around here its going to need a price drop next year.

You can see PS4 got a small bump from Pro in 2017 too, but this year is PS4's peak year because of pretty much GOW and Spidey alone.

When you compared with close to nothing you will have a great year :D

But the "It's a mid-generation turnaround the market's never seen before" bother me... what turnaround? The sales are not even the peak for the console... so what turnaround?

Xev has it here:

Those are Jan-October sales for each year, brackets are PS4 :P

And yes, the turnaround is very clear to see. After a 31% drop YOY, the X boosted xbox back up 36% YOY.

That is not a turnaround that the market never seen before lol

Or to recover to near what it was before is considered a turnaround?

Yes it is. There's never been a turnaround like this due to an enhanced console releasing before. And I also can't think of a console which has switched a decline once its started. Sure some consoles have delayed their declines or halted them for a year or two, but this jump up after a jump down is very rare.

Umm what? Xbox 360 had it's peak year in its 6th  had a big turn around thanks to kinect.

360 never declined YOY on though, it reached its peak and stayed there for a year or two then kinect gave it a second, bigger peak. And also the kinect isn't a new enhanced console, which was my point.

Anyway its not me who made the statement and I don't care about defending the finer details of what he said. Its something new happening with the XB1, and there's no point being pedantic about it.

Hum?

360 2009: 4,770,700
360 2010: 6,764,100

PS3 2007: 2,557,100
PS3 2008: 3,544,900

It didn't have a turn around, sales didn't decrease the previous year.

The point is not that it had a big jump.  The typical console has a few years of increased followed by a few years of decrease.

The Xbox 360 follows that pattern, it did better every year peaking with the Kinect release.

Xbox One is seeing record numbers after having a drop, which has never happened before.

I need to check older data for that.

What Pi said, none of these show a big jump up after a big drop. The XB1 is the only console to have ever done this.

the-pi-guy

Basically a normal console has a trend like this

1
2 (increase)
3 (increase)
4 (increase)
5  (increase)
4  (decrease)
3  (decrease)
2  (decrease)
1  (decrease)

All increase followed by all decrease.

The Xbox One is seeing something like this:
1
2
2
0.8
2

A massive increase after a bad year.

That increase is what the analysts are talking about when they are talking about the turn around.  They are explicitly talking about a increase following a decrease.
