CCP puts VR on hold and lays off almost 100 employees - NeoGAF

Icelandic video game developer CCP Games will be putting virtual reality game development on hold for the next 2-3 years, as well as shutting down its Atlanta office and selling the Newcastle office. This was announced to employees earlier today. Mbl reports.
 The restructure will affect approximately a hundred employees, of which 30 are stationed in Reykjavík. While most will be laid off, some will be offered new positions at other offices.
 Global CEO Hilmar Veigar Pétursson told Mbl that the company is in no way abandoning VR development. "We‘ve been doing incredibly well (with VR), but now we‘re seeing a bit of a slowdown for the next 2-3 years. We‘re going to be focusing more on PC and mobile titles from now on."
 Pétursson explained that the company believes in a prosperous future for VR, although its evolution has been coming in waves. Whenever the time comes for VR‘s next upturn, he believes it will be easy for CCP to lead the way. "VR will change the world in the end."
 This isn‘t the first time the 20-year-old company has laid off employees, and Pétursson believes that change is necessary in order to ensure CCP‘s future. "It‘s always hard to face these things but they are important and if we want the company to become 30-years-old we will sometimes need to do policy- and organisational change."
