He has been helping his dad run their family restaurant for several years and hopes to eventually take it over. However, his dad suddenly decided to close down the restaurant for a few years to cook around the world. He had Souma enroll in Totsuki Academy, a prestigous culinary school that only has a 10% graduation rate, so his son can broaden his horizons.
