When do you move in?

Taking online courses and staying at home.  At least for the first semester.
I didn't like the idea of taking more loans like my sister did.

I start September 3. I live somewhat close to the College so I live at home. I prefer it this way though, because it costs so much for residency near the school and I'm already paying 4K+ per semester.

I started yesterday!  Gonna be a kickass semester.  And no don't live in a fudgy dorm people.  fudge the college life.  I've commuted an hour since I started college 2 years ago.  And not to mention I only go 1 day a week this semester since I have 2 online class and my other classes are on Monday's.  Cool thing though is I have next monday off since it's Labor Day so I don't have to go back to campus for 2 weeks.

Ah well trust me there is nothing to be nervous about.  I was a little nervous too on my first day and a little before, but just try going into the first day thinking everything will be awesome.  It will be alright.  Also try and open up a bit to people in your classes.  It makes it so much more enjoyable if you try not to be shy.  I was pretty shy my first year, but now I've opened up a lot over the last 2 years.

Well it's probably quite a bit different in UK, but a lot(literally a lot) of people in the US are absolutely idiots.  They think the dumbest things are funny, they are immature piece of nuggets, and they have no respect for anyone else or their elders.

But yeah, starting a conversation is really hard for me.  Once one is started though I'm good.

Yep its very similar here but I'm not with idiots anymore because the college I'm in has high standards (5 Bs needed to get in) and I've picked the more 'clever' subjects :P

We have districts. If you live in the district, you can go to the high school.

If you want to go out of district, then you have to apply.

Yeah same here for high schools but our high schools are your middle schools, sort of. Getting into college is very similar to uni except you don't move to go to college, you find one in your area. They have lots of buses that go all over the place. Off the top of my head there's 5 good ones I could have gone to just by catching a bus.

Finished my first (half) week at college.  At first it felt a bit weird, I guess it hadn't hit me that I'd be spending the next two years of my life there. On the first day it hit me how much more work than school it would be and I worried a bit but after two more days I've settled down and I'm starting to enjoy myself. Still struggling to speak to people in my Physics and Chemistry classes but Physics is getting better. Someone I know sits with me in maths and the other two on my table are great so I'm really enjoying maths. Just struggling to talk to that person I really want to talk to  :-\

I'm falling behind!
Some of the classes aren't set up well, so it's been a pain to find out what I'm supposed to be doing. And now that I've figured out what I'm supposed to be doing, I'm struggling to do it in a timely manner.
Just yesterday, I went from not knowing any of the psych material to taking a quiz in 2 hours!  Really easy quiz, but I'm needing to rush through everything so far.

Calculus and Algebra are just two different ways of doing the same math.  One is based on graph theory, the other is done mechanically.  They eventually merge together.  That's what Calculus 3 is.  I wouldn't be surprised if the discrete stuff starts showing up there.

Well my TA for Algebra mentioned that about the Calculus 3 course (Which I never took).  Though you can see a bit of it in high school Algebra when you study linear equations.  y-x+10 = 0 is a line on a plane, y = x - 10 is a line on a graph displaced 10 down.  Obviously it gets far more complex than that.  But the principle remains.

Personally I felt that Calculus was basically advanced algebra with some special sauce.
Algebra:  m = ?y/?x
This only works with lines though; then bam Calculus makes this thingy and it works with everything.  EVERYTHING*.
Calculus: m = ?y/?x = ?f(x)/?x = (f(x1) - f(x))/(x1-x)  ::: x1 = x+h :::  (f(x+h) - f(x)) /(x+h-x)  ==== (f(x+h) - f(x))/(h)

*Not really everything.

Yeah ditto.

Geometry was my only math class that I didn't feel was an expanson of algebra.

Yeah agreed.  I hated geometry tbh.  Though that was before I took math seriously.  Today I would do better with Geometry.

You're getting closer XD.  Algebra would be something like [1 1 | 1], the mechanical aspect got turned into matrices to speed up the process.  That calculus you wrote is the actual discrete notation.  But the theory remains: what is this graph to infinity?

Okay.  Yeah, I'm not sure how things are down in the U.S. but they really screwed up the Algebra course.  You're going to go into university and it's all Matrices.  Sad cause about 13 years ago the Algebra course in High School up here dedicated a huge portion into matrices.

My current classes are going awful.   I missed a lot of stuff, and am borderline.

Scheduling my classes.
If I don't take a computer science class this semester, I'll be a year behind.  But it'll be hard for me to get there.
Also wondering if another class would be too much for me.  This next semester I'll be working less and doing more school I hope.

I'm really excited for the next two years of school.
I've got a plan for each semester, but we'll see how it goes.  :)
I will be able to finish the Associates and the emphases for both math and Computer Science in two years with room to spare.
I was hoping to fill that room with the physics emphasis requirements stuff, but there's a schedule conflict for the first class, then the next time I will be able to take the first class is in the next Spring.  So I won't be able to take the other class requirements.

It's not important though.  Got the major stuff in.  :D

Great to be on campus.
A little worried about math, I'm out of practice with some of the Calc stuff.

Math is hard, but  I understand it.
History is easyish, but it's really cool.  We're covering a lot of the stuff that Legend has talked about.  Stuff like number systems was chapter one, and that people knew the earth wasn't flat was chapter two I think.  It's interesting.  We're learning about some cool science history.

My bad dreams normally involve me forgetting that I have an exam that day.  For a class I've never taken before.  Then I start worrying that if I fail I won't graduate.  Then I wake up and remember I graduated almost 7 years ago.  I normally get these dreams around exam time/midterm time of the year.

CPS hasn't changed.  I'm like a week ahead of class just by showing up.  It's awesome. Really excited about future classes too.  There are classes on AI, graphics, assembly, etc, etc.

Math, I miss having math in class.  Videos make the math look easy, while the book complicates things.
But I'm not going to be able to take any math classes on campus until next Spring.  Only classes I can take after this is Calc 3 and Linear Algebra.  Calc 3 is only offered on campus during the spring and it's at the same time as Linear Algebra.  So I'd have to miss one of them to do that.  So Calc 3, I'll take online next semester.  Last online class I'm planning.
Really excited about math too, lots of interesting stuff.  Math is also a much bigger subject than I ever thought.  In high school, there's a line of math classes to take, but after Calc 3 in college, you can pretty much take a bunch of different directions.  And there's a ton of classes too.

History is history.  Lots of memorization, but this class is a little bit more conceptual than most history classes which is a really nice thing.  Still, mostly memorization, so if you can't remember the important stuff, then it's a struggle.  But, it's not a difficult class in the least.  We are starting to get into Newton, but I think he is only covered for a chapter.  After this chapter, we start to talk about evolution and the progress of its science, etc.

Take the assembly.  You'll gain a new found understanding of how computers work.  Taking Linear Algebra is the best bet.  Plus, if I'm right, Calc 3 is the graphing way of doing what you're going to be learning in Linear Algebra, so you're better off getting the Algebra and doing Calc online.  If you really wanna challenge yourself.  Take a bunch of physics classes.  That's where you really see Calculus and Algebra merge.  Like, take nuclear physics and electro/magnetic physics.  Though you might already be taking the later.

One guy was really cocky.  "I had to do something the teacher told us that we wouldn't need to do, but I have 100% so you know I know what I'm doing."
The teacher wrote the main class, and we were supposed to write the rest of it.  But he changed the main class so it did what he wanted it to do.
I did it without doing that, and it was pretty easy.  :D

And then I help a bunch of the other classmates, and I overhelp too.  :)

Pretty well, need to get reading science books and get more involved in science out of college but that should be ok.

I've done 7 units this year: core 1,2,3,4, mechanics 1, decision 1 and 2. Core modules involve a lot of algebra... so quite a lot of trig, graphs and line equations, differentiating, integrating. There's some vectors and geometry but its mostly algebra. Mechanics is lots of calculations, basically just physics, its based on Newton's Laws mainly. So there's projectiles, trig, falling objects, moving objects, forces etc. Decision is just weird. Its mainly using algorithms to do more practical maths, using lots of graphs and tables. So you can use many different algorithms to work out the shortest distance possible to do a tour of a number of cities and stuff like that. There's also matchings to work out how to pair things up and sorts which are quite useful. Mostly pretty easy so far but next year we do further maths which involves more fun things

Good luck!
Yeah, we don't have modules like that.  We have Algebra, Geometry, Algebra II, Pre-Calculus, Calculus. Mechanics would just be physics I here, at least that's the closest thing.  Didn't have any decision courses like that.

I think that's a better system tbh. Mechanics is great, I just find it really fun probably because its a physics based module. Yeah decision is pretty boring tbh

Taking math online was a terrible idea for me.
ODE is fairly easy, but at times it's a lot of work.  And I can be pretty lazy.  :P
RK4 method requires 4 different slope calculations just for one point.  Bleh. :P

I'm sad that History and CPS are finishing up.
History is very interesting and CPS is super easy and pretty interesting too.

What do you study in history?

Its history of science.
We cover Copernicus, Galileo, Newton for the heliocentric system.
And Darwin for evolution.

Yeah, super interesting.
We just covered the evolution debate, where people started claiming that it doesn't fit with the Bible and stuff.

And with today, the semester comes to a close.
Math ended up a little better than I expected it. Not sure how I got the grade though.
Not doing online math anymore, and changed my schedule accordingly.

History ended up a little worse than expected, but still great.
Was my favorite class to take online for sure.

Computer Science ended up exactly as I expected, amazing.
Was my favorite class ever to take.

Next semester I'm taking
-Intro to Anthropology
-Music Theory I
-English
-Computer Science II

School is starting in exactly 3 weeks.

Just bought my last textbook, I hope...

English, I'm dreading.  Almost always my least favorite class, and I'm just not wanting to do it.
Anthro and music, I'm not sure about.  Could go really well, or not so well.  Have never done a class like either of them.  Anthro has a lab that I'm worried about.  Music, I'm looking forward to, but very nervous about at the same time because it's all new stuff.
CPS should be great, but now I'm getting nervous about that too.
Should be good though I think.

CPS is interesting.  It's kind of taught as an online course that's on campus, which is weird.  Think its going pretty well. Feels like the class is going too slow, in my opinion.  But that's okay, more time for other things.  Very excited for this semester.

Anthropology is cool.  I feel like this class is going a little slow too, but that's alright.  It's a different kind of class than I'm used to.  It feels like Biology, history and maybe a few more subjects got together to have a party.

Music Theory is okay.  I like learning about the stuff.  But everyone in the class has had far more experience with the subject than I have had.  This is the first time I've even looked at music in a classroom in 4 years.  The little bit that is saving me is what I remember from like freshman in high school and usually being able to learn it quickly.  There's other aspects that I'm having trouble keeping up with though.

English is not my forte.  It's always a lot of effort for not a lot of work.  But I think it'll go alright.

One really interesting thing is when a different class comes back to something.

Math class, we talk about Laplace and Newton.
History class, we talk about Laplace, Newton, Darwin, Cuvier, Pythagoras.
Anthropology, we talk about Darwin and Cuvier.
Music class we talk about Pythagoras.

I really hate doing school work, like English especially.  I end up not doing some things...
On the other hand, I'm like really excited for upper level math, and computer science and physics.

I spend a lot of time researching what classes I'll hopefully end up taking, and I look around for books I can buy.
All this while skipping some stuff I need to be doing right now....

Anyways, I'm really excited for some of those classes.

Math - Complex, real analysis, topology, number theory, etc.  Think I'm going to take as much analysis, algebra and probably geometry as I can fit in my schedule.
CS, I'm excited to learn about a lot of stuff.  There's classes on programming languages, Operating systems, compilers,  graphics, AI.

Physics hopefully I'll be able to do, there's classes on Electricity and Magnetism, Optics, Quantum Mechanics, Thermodynamics, and more.

It sounds weird to me, but I actually think I'm more excited about math.

I've got an A in my Anthro and CPS class though.

Anthro is really interesting.

CPS is really interesting too.  It's very different from last semester.  In terms of how I'm feeling about it and how it's taught.
It's weird, because I'm having less confidence about it.  I kinda think oh, wow how do I even do this?  Then I sit down, and do it and it's like that was pretty easy.  I don't think I've ever really had that before.

Music is interesting too.  Not doing anywhere near as well in it though.
It's a lot more challenging.  I think partly because he doesn't really teach that much.  And partly because it's completely new stuff for me.
It's like I look at the homework and 4 hours later I figure out why something is the way it is.  Like oh this is why we can't have a major II in a major scale.  Then I'm like "did he talk about this, I think it would have been easier if he did."  And based on how the other students are doing and comments they've made, they seem to be in a similar boat.
I think that class is how math class is for most people.  They might know they have to do something a certain way, but they don't really know why.

I'm really awful at online classes.
Something about them don't really click well with me.  Not having to show up for class makes things hard for me I think.  There's no instruction, I'm the one who has to seek out what I need to do.  Which is okay, but it's made worse by the fact that there's no showing up for class.  It makes it easy to just put it off till the last minute.
Really shouldn't have taken English online....

Really excited for next semester.

CPS sounds pretty exciting.  The teacher was saying we would learn C++ in 4 weeks.  Which would be pretty cool.  :D

Physics will be great I think.  Think it will be pretty easy.
The school book store was selling the book for 140$ used.  Amazon had it for 10$ with prime shipping.

Math will be good too.

English, I'm currently signed up for a class.  I'm thinking that I might switch to a different one though.

I have some news.

You know I'm graduated in Computer Science (2004) but I choose to back to university again to graduate in Law School lol
Yeap Law School.

I made the test and I was approved in 4th place with 83%... I just made the test for fun and ended getting into the Law School.

Now in 5 years (or less) I will be ready to be lawyer (well I won't work in that area to be fair I will stay working with IT at IBM).

Weird, no?

Edit - I start next year in February... way less time to play games with work + school :(

How bad is failing?

I did pretty bad my first semester.
I tried to
-take all online class (which doesn't work because I'm not always that motivated to do stuff)
-take classes I didn't enjoy
-work full time and school full time.

Got a very terrible GPA, and the following semester I actually managed to more than double my semester GPA.

I'm taking 4 courses, 2 of which I have already done once but didn't get a high enough mark (I need 65+, not sure what that is in GPA terms but it's basically a C+ or higher).

The course I'm about to fail is Accounting, which I already took before but I literally never paid attention in class or just straight up didn't go so it feels like I'm doing it for the first time. I have like a 25-30% in the class so far and the final exam is worth 45% so really the only way I can get a 65+ in this course is if I get almost perfect on the exam, and I'm looking at some of the questions to study right now and have no clue what's going on. Same shame as last time I took it, I rarely went to the classes and barely paid attention even if I did.

My 3 other courses are decent enough I guess but I don't even care at this point. I'm so uninterested in the courses I'm taking and the only reason I'm doing this is because my parents would just love for me to have a job where I dress professionally and work in an office... The thing that sucks is if I tell them I don't like what I'm studying right now they'll ask me what I do want to study and honestly I have no fudgy clue. I feel lost right now. No idea what I'm going to do in my future.

I work as a grocery clerk (stocker) at a store atm and I fear that is what I will be doing for the rest of my life. Earning minimum wage and barely getting by.

I have two other cousins here in Canada and one of the graduated top of his class at a reputable school and now works at EY (Accounting firm) and my other cousin goes to the same school and is getting really high marks as well. It's so fudgy annoying having people tell me why I can't be more like them. Nothing pisses me off more.

Microeconomics, Income Tax 1, Accounting and Business Information Systems.
Here's what I would do if I were in your position.
Take a break from your businessy classes.  I don't know if you're at a business-only school or what.

But if you can take other courses, do so.

Look for classes that are different from anything you've taken and sound interesting.
My college has all these and a few more.
-Computer Science
-Anthropology
-Chemistry
-Physics
-Math
-Biology
-Music
-Art
-Engineering
-Philosophy
-Sociology
-Psychology
-Politics

There's a lot of different types of classes in college, many of which are very different from anything I've ever had in school.  If you have any option to take any classes above that even remotely interest you, consider taking them.
College is not just about chugging through school to get a degree, it's also about figuring stuff out about yourself.   Sometimes you find the subject you think you hate the most ends up being the most exciting.  Including subjects like math, though they aren't for everybody.

In the US, the average student changes their major 3 times.  It's not like they just go through college and finally get their degree doing what ever they started with.

My girlfriend was originally going for Social work stuff, but found that it's not all it's cracked up to be.  Now she's doing nutrition stuff, and taking a lot of Chemistry, Biology classes and she's much happier.
If you don't know what you want to do for sure, just experiment.

It's hard to experiment like this though. It costs money to take courses, money which I don't have and I don't want to get student loans so that I rack up debt and by the time I'm done with school most of the money I make will go towards paying it off.

I'm gonna have to talk to my parents at the end of the semester.

This is pretty much my thread at this point.

Today is my second day, and every Tuesday I'm going to have a 12 hour day at school...

Math class:  This is my first class of the week.  It's a Linear Algebra course.  It looks like it'll be very interesting.  And probably pretty easy.  I'm pretty sure this is the smallest math course in the entire college.  There are only 3 people in my class.  The grading is different.  Most classes require a 93 for an A, but this one looks to only require an 88, which is weird.  Think the class period is too short though.  Just feels like it takes us so much time to get into it, and then the class is almost over.  It's interesting though that I feel that way, because high school courses were shorter.  It just feels different compared to the hour and a half courses that I'm now used.

English:  Just like math, this is a short class.  I'm excited for this one.  Completely different from my last English class, which seemed like a lot of work.  This one doesn't seem like there will be much work, which is awesome.

Computer:  Pretty much the same as my last computer science class.  Except this time, we'll be using C++.  I haven't written much in C++, but now I will have to.  So I'm very excited!

Physics:  Haven't had the class yet, it's in like 3 hours.  It looks like it'll be pretty good, a lot of review for me.  Maybe a little nervous about the lab, but it should be good.

Computer 2:  Also haven't had this class yet.  I'm not sure how some of it is going to go.  Very nervous for this one.  It kind of sounds like my English class last semester, which was rough.

Much of my schedule is flexible this semester because I don't have classes. I do need to TA two labs and the rest of my time is allocated towards researching and writing.

Math:    The online sites really suck.  They ask questions and they check the answers in a very stupid way.  It's basically set up to look for one kind of input.
4 = 2 + 2 is correct, but 2+2=4 is wrong.  That's basically what they do sometimes.

Physics was kind of boring the first day.  All syllabus stuff.  Think it'll be a good semester though.

Right now I'm taking Calc III, half way done with the class.  Got 3 weeks left.  After that I fly up to AK.

In the fall I am taking

-Abstract Algebra
-Partial Differential Equations
-Japanese I
-CPS Assembly
-Modern Physics

At the moment I am trying to take Discrete Mathematics as an independent study course, because I kind of need it for the next year.

In the Spring it is looking like
-Artificial Intelligence
-Theory of Computation
-Classical Physics + Lab
-Physics II

I might also take Topology.  But we will see.

I am pretty excited a lot of exciting classes coming up.

I'm so glad I'm done with school.  Can finally just focus on environment art instead of having to spend half or more of my time working on shaming classes that have absolutely nothing to do with what I want to do and only detract form me getting a good amount of experience working on environments.

Now comes the focus too on getting as many connections in the industry as possible.  i've always struggled with it as I don't want to get to the point where I may be annoying people.  One girl that is super talented at blizzard style character and creature art basically hounded artists at blizzard and because of that they want nothing to do with her because she got annoying.

Also I'm close to tempted to just say fudge it and work freelance or another job that just gets me money, and work on a game idea me and a friend from school have and just be an indie dev and get experience that way.  If I can't get in the industry I'll just force my way in by making my own game and studio(which I want to do anyway at some point.)

Yep!  Lots of freedom here.  Most Universities as far as I know allow you take whatever, as long as you meet the prerequisites.

But sometimes they have prerequisites that you have to be in a particular program.  :P
But I've only seen that at my fiance's university.  For Physics I probably won't even be part of the program until I'm pretty much finished.  Or maybe I'll apply to graduate and no one will even know.  lol

I might decide not to take Japanese or PDE this fall.  It's a super heavy course load, so I'm not really sure.  :P

techniques of artificial intelligence.

Basically you can apply to a University and say I'm going for Physics or I'm going for Math, or you can even just say you're undeclared.  If you are declared, you're put into that program.  The physics program, the math program, etc.

You can easily take classes outside your program, and even are required to take some.

But at my fiance's school, some of her higher up classes require her to be part of the Dietetic program.

That sounds like a really good system tbh. At our universities you just have to apply for a course and you do whatever topics are on that course. Some courses have a list of options and you pick a few of them to do but if you were doing physics then they'd all be physics topics.

There's a few courses which are more flexible and allow you to pick up topics from other courses but that's more rare.

Polar coordinates are kinda cool.
(x,y)
In order to define every point in rectangular coordinates you need (-infinity,+infinity) for both the x and the y.   But with polar, you can define every point for r with just the positive numbers [0,+infinity), and for theta, just between [0, 2pi)  Seems like madness. :o

I've never done those before. Seems fairly simple except I've never been taught straight up integrating x terms with respect to y.

I know something you don't?  :o
I'll explain!
So basically first we learned about partial derivatives, a derivative with respect to another.  u = f(x,y,z).  The way we take the derivative in this case is by treating the other values as if they were a constant.  So if we had z = xy + y + x,  if we took the derivative with respect to y, we would treat x as a constant.  dz/dy = x+1, so we pretend that x is a constant.  d/dy (xy)=x is the same thing as d/dy (3y) = 3.   We also get the dz/dx = y+1.

The double integrals are generally used for volume, sometimes they are used for areas.  Basically it's kinda, but not exactly the opposite of that.  z= f(x,y), basically you take two integrals, one for y, and one for x.  And you keep the other variable as a constant.
There are some cases, where the inside integral will have a function of the outer.  That case you plug in the function for the variable you are integrating. Sometimes you have to switch the outer and inner integrals and you also have to switch the bounds of the integral. I understand how to do this, but I keep having troubles getting the right answer.  :P

You definitely will.

Why do you have to change the bounds?
Sometimes you have to switch the y and x functions.
Let's say you are to solve this integral
(http://rogercortesi.com/eqn/tempimagedir/eqn7701.png)
In it's current state it is unsolvable in elementary terms.  There's no nice way to solve it for an exact answer.  Some teachers might even tell you that it is completely unsolvable.  The only way to solve it, is using a series and that can get really messy and you'd have to add a lot of numbers to get some result.
If you switch the bounds to being a dydx equation, it is actually really easy even to find an exact answer.

Starting to think of plan B if I don't get a job in the games industry within the next 6 months to a year.  I'm thinking make my portfolio as kickass as possible by the beginning of september.  Get tons of connections over the next couple months and start applying again to anything that I fit the qualifications for most of september and october.  If I get nothing through that, then I'll take another month and work on a really small portfolio piece and tweak some things and apply again in December and January.  If I still don't get anything I might go back to school and get my Masters so I would be able to take another 2 years and focus on environment art even more without worry of needing a job in the industry yet.  Try for some internships while doing the degree and hope I get something.  Plus I would love the opportunity to teach other people in the program as an instructor after working in the industry for a bit.  Cause our college needs instructors with experience in the industry which is why our program has like a less than 10% success rate getting into the AAA industry.

And yeah I've been thinking a lot about wanting the ability to teach what I do to others at some point and most everywhere college wise you'll need a masters degree and if you don't in some places it won't be long till you do. Abstract Algebra: We've just been given a couple of problems and give justification for why they work.  Looks like it'll be an interesting class.
Intro to Modern Physics: Really cool.
Awesome teachers all around^

PDE: Really cool that I remember so much ODE.  Should be helpful.
Japanese: Really hard. :P
Assembly: Haven't really gotten into anything.

So I decided against going back for my masters as of now.  I might still do a masters later on all online(if able) while working a job.  Mostly if I get tired of the industry(not terribly likely but who never know), especially if crunch time doesn't get better and it gets tiring, but would be nice if crunch gets better at all or most dev studios.   Not to mention I really didn't want to do anymore classes that take away from me working full time on my environments/props

However I do have another plan in mind that if it goes as planned, I should get into the industry within the next year.  So I'm gonna apply, apply, apply starting now until at least January.  If I don't get any jobs by then i'm thinking I am going to apply to Gnomon for either the March term or the June term in California and while it's super expensive, most people don't actually finish because they get a job before they have a chance too.  So I'm hoping I can take a term or two and get a connection into a job after that.

Abstract Algebra: Really fun.  We are given like 1 problem every day, that is very different from most things I've ever had to solve.  Really fun math class. One of the most fun math classes I've ever had.

Intro to Modern Physics: Really fun. Some of the concepts are a little hard to understand thus far.   Seem to be doing really good in the class, but I haven't really felt like I've been getting it.

PDE: A typical math class, frankly.  Really cool to see how a lot of the math behind physics works out.  Like the wave equation and stuff.

Japanese: Doing really well in this class.  Can't wait to be done though.  Just really not a fan of talking to other people.  Really enjoying learning the language though.  Really want to continue that for a long time.

Assembly: We are only now getting into things that I didn't do last semester.  But it's still stuff I know pretty well.  Converting number bases to other ones.  But, looks like the class is finally starting to ramp up just a little bit.  Hopefully this stays as my "free" class where I don't have to do anything outside class.

Discrete Structures:  Really tough.  It's very different from any kind of math I've done before.  It also really sucks that I'm trying to learn it on my own.  :P  I am not really sure why I thought this was a good idea....  Hopefully it goes well.

Put in a request for an appointment with an advisor at Gnomon!  Gonna hopefully get some feedback on my portfolio and what I should focus on making sure I have in it to ensure acceptance.  Also figure out the best program for me to enroll into and whether I do the spring or summer term for start date.   Most likely I will try spring.

Also gonna start finding more smaller studios to send my stuff too.  i've been focusing on bigger studios too much and I don't think I am quite ready for a AAA studio yet.

So if anyone finds or knows of smaller studios send their name and website my way.  Even if they are not hiring I'm just gonna send my stuff anyway and see what happens.   Hope to hit 100 apps all together by end of January or so if I don't get anything by then.  So far I'm at 30 and have had absolutely zero feedback even from the ones I sent follow ups too.  Not to mention I'm not even getting considered for junior positions so I'm getting discouraged a lot.

Even though its not school, I'm trying to get some of my current projects for my portfolio done so I can chill and relax for the next week to week and a half.  Only problem is I feel I should be doing stuff at all times, but it's hard when it's the holidays and I'm usually working at home almost everyday and only really leave to go work out for a couple hours and the occasional eating out.

I got 2 A's, 3 B's and 1 C+.

Abstract Algebra (B) - Really interesting class.  I didn't really spend as much time as I would have liked on this class.  The teacher was pretty nice, but he wasn't very organized.  Had class Monday, Wednesday and Friday.  There were times he would post an assignment on Tuesday, that were due in class on Wednesday... Not very great for people who are taking lots of classes or working a lot...  But really interesting class, was a lot of really basic math stuff like sets. Basically no calculation, all theory.

Discrete Mathematics (B) - Took this class as an independent study.  Didn't spend very much time on this class, at all.  Basically I did the assignments and that was basically how I learned all the material.  Was a tough class, and a lot of people who were actually in class did much worse than I did.... Actually curved my grade up from a C+.

Partial Differential Equation (C+) - This class  I really messed up on.  Based on what I heard other students say, they really struggled with this one too.  I personally really messed up with homework.  There were like 5 assignments this semester, and 3 of them were barely half finished.  This one is on me.  I didn't do super great on the first 2 tests either.  Got a 90% on the final though.  So not too bad.  I didn't really care too much about this class, and it ended up being the last thing I worked on, every single time. So I often didn't finish everything.

Assembly (B) - This one is a bit tricky.  The material wasn't too bad, the teacher wasn't a very good teacher.  It's not very easy to follow his organization.  There was a lecture, where he spent more time talking about chips would often have drawing on them, than he did talking about some of the material that actually ended up being on the test.  All in all, I'm okay with my grade here.

Modern Physics (A) - Super awesome class, and super awesome teacher.  Was a super nice teacher. Really excited to have him next semester as well.  Definitely planning on doing a triple major.

Japanese 1 (A) - Had a lot of fun.  Really excited to keep learning.  But I don't plan to take a Japanese class again soon, but learning on my own from here on for a little while.  Had a lot of fun.  Japanese is a really cool language.

Next semester I plan to take:
-Topology
-Introductory Physics II
-Classical Mechanics
-Physics Lab I
-Artificial Intelligence
-Computer Theory

It went great.

I've been really excited.  Getting to the end of my programs, ever so slowly, but surely.
7 physics classes left after next semester.
3 math classes left.
7 CS classes left.

I'm surprised your Discrete class wasn't mandatory.  It was for us.  What did they replace Formal Languages with for you?  They replaced ours with Discrete II and then replaced that with some comp sci version of it.

Discrete was mandatory.  I took it as independent study because I had a time conflict.

I still have to take Programming Language.  Theory of Computation also covered languages.

"Formal Languages" not programming languages.  Theory of Computation might be that.  Pretty much Formal Languages is all state machines.  It's the math theory for compilers.  Minus the compiler part.

Yes and no.  It's a course you have to take in Comp Sci.  There's an optional part 2.  There's also a full 4 year program that stretches those 2 courses into 4 years.  I think dedicated software engineering is a scam.  There's only so many ways to explain the same 3 business docs you're never going to use..

Here SE and CS are pretty similar, SE is like CS lite, CS has more math and more theory classes; SE requires Databases and Software Engineering II.

But it sounded like in Canada, you have to do software engineering to be called an "engineer"

You do.  It's why it's a scam.  It's just a business study with comp sci courses.  Or take Computer Engineering.

To be young again.

And also a robot.

I really need to study up on my physics classes.
Math is going pretty good.
Computer Science is going really good.
Philosophy is garbage.  Which is awesome.

I've just kind of been ignoring my physics classes lately.  So I need to catch up a bit.  The thing that's kind of bothersome, these classes just feel like the teachers are just picking random things to talk about.  Which is sometimes awesome when there's interesting stuff.  But usually it's not all that fun.

My other classes are really awesome.  I feel like the class is designed to be about making progress towards something.
Compilers is obviously about building a compiler.  And it's cool, we get to build each step, and we knew day 1 what we'd be doing the whole semester.
Computer Networks is cool, we learn how networks work.  And we do it from the top down.  Which is cool.  You learn some practical stuff, then you learn how each layer works with it.
Philosophy is literally just taking chapters out of a textbook, so it's pretty standard.
And my math class doesn't have a textbook, but it's still just amazingly set up.   It feels like we are building up to something, even though there isn't a textbook to show us where we are going.  Almost everything we do in that class depends on stuff we did earlier.  So like everyday is like "we showed that this is true yesterday, and we're building on this result in this way."

So I've been talking to the math teacher about doing a study.

Wow this thread has been dead for a long time! I'm in the middle of another horrible exam season and its gonna feel so good when its finally done. Been doing loads of exams every year in may-june for as long as I can remember it feels like, started in 2013 with my GCSEs. If my memory serves me right I had 3 exams in 2013, 23 exams in 2014, 13 in 2015, 12 in 2016, 6 in 2017, 7 in 2018 and now 8 in 2019. All in May/June.

2014 looks the hardest but they were all GCSE exams which were fairly easy, it has pretty much gotten harder every year despite the number.

The schedule for this year is pretty tough, my exams are May 2nd, 9th, 13th, 20th, 22nd, 24th, 28th and June 3rd. First exam last week went fairly well, hoping the one tomorrow goes good too.

Completing 40% of my year or about 12% of my degree within the space of 8 days is brutal though, I really hate how my Uni does everything in the final term instead of exams at the end of modules or in January.

So school is really rough.  The biggest thing is I'm starting to not care.  So even when I have a good amount of time to work on anything, I don't feel like I want to.

Have some final projects that i have to finish.

Electricity & Magnetism:
I am interested in this subject, but I'm not doing very well.  It doesn't help that the professor isn't posting what we are doing in class.
If I was able to care more and wasn't so busy, I could learn more out of the book.

Physics Lab:
I hate lab.  And my wife and I spent like 6 hours together working on trying to put the data together.  I noticed that some of the data was missed, and my lab partner and I didn't do a couple of runs.

Programming Languages:
I'm doing well.  It's a class I've been skipping because I need time to work on other things.  Really interesting stuff.

Graphics:
It's an alright class.  I'm not a fan of the professor's teaching style, but I'm looking forward to getting more in depth with it in the future.

Computing Ethics:
This class is interesting, pretty easy.  Not really liking the teacher though.

Senior Physics Project:
Finally figuring this out.  So that's a plus.
Was a pain though.

Yay for not caring!

So two more exams down, got iced by my Uni as both were a lot harder than the past papers but I think I still did okay.

So my master's project for next year has been confirmed! I'm going to be studying the effect of the changing global climate on wildfires and the feedback loop of wildfires in turn affecting the climate which then effects wildfires more etc. so that's cool!

Also decided I'm studying Unification, Quantum Theory of Matter, Quantum Field Theory, Atmospheric Physics and Nanotechnology next year.

Still got my exams on light and matter, statistical mechanics, physics of the universe and fluid dynamics, group theory and suns stars and planets to go this year.

Basically completely ignored students and went with the worst possible solution to summer exams because its best for them. Students are having panic attacks and they don't get shame. There's going to be some people who have a massive advantage over others in the remote exams they've planned. Its just all horseshit.

Students are trying to mobilise action against the college, whistle-blowing and leaking emails to the press which show massive incompetence and negligence. We're hoping it goes somewhere but it probably won't.
