That pretty much sums up how horrible this reveal was.

The PS5 is amazing. It is not a weak half baked next gen system like lots of people are treating it. If Sony came out with real next gen games that showed off these features, we'd only have the normal fanboy warz where everyone argues their preferred system is the best.

Instead fans are having to rely on "internet experts" to interpret specs for them. The average gamer will look at the numbers side by side and really only understand that XSX has bigger numbers.

So only about 100 PS4 games will be playable day 1?

Uhm I don't see how so many misunderstood that. He didn't exclude the rest

Yeah PS5 seems like a cheaper BOM than XSX but its focussed much more where it counts and optimised better for a next gen system. Seems like Sony cared more deeply about bottlenecks and making sure everything works well together while MS just pumped the numbers up.

XSX may manage more frame rates if unlocked and a higher resolution if variable but most games should be 4K60fps anyway, and PS5 looks like a true generational leap with the SSD.

PS5 should be cheaper and feel more next gen, as long as it is powerful enough to hit 4k60 on every big game. If that happens, Sony are onto a winner yet again.

Combine that with 3d audio and it sounds like they're doing more than just power

It's interesting how both consoles have a lot of dedicated hardware.
Like apparently the PS5 dedicates more CPU power to the decompression for the SSD than the main CPU.

Not to mention dedicated audio.

It's because moore's law isn't what it used to be. Dedicated hardware allows devices to keep getting better without the same transistor bumps.

It's funny because the ssd allows a lot of the same tricks I'm doing with proc gen.

In the Forged Kingdoms it takes just a second or so to generate a new world from the player's perspective. It allows the entire world to "stream" as the player moves in any direction.

For non proc gen games, the same is now possible for massive worlds shipped on the game disc. They can be fully seamless without slow sections stringing places together. Think Star Citizen and Beyond Good and Evil 2. A city can just be part of the world instead of being a node.

So are they wrong or ?

SSDs at these speeds are gamechangers. Anyone who says they'll only decrease load times is wrong.

Well the digital foundry guy says he was arguing that the much faster speeds on PS5 won't do much more than the speeds on XSX.
Not that the SSD won't change things.

For a multiplat yeah, you can't have different layouts per system. PS5 can have better textures and lod though. Will be funny if most ps5 games look better but run at a slightly lower resolution.

13 million+ views, and surprisingly positive response.

A lot of people joking that its a lecture.

Fun fact the SSD in the PS5 has about half the bandwidth of the Wii U's main RAM.

A lot of the PS5's designs feels like it's an effort to correct criticism about the PS4.  Most notably the cooling system.
And the SSD also feels like it helps Sony's goals of getting away from load times that previous consoles had issues with.

I think the PS5 might be ahead in rasterization

Will be fun to find out exactly how both systems compare. I wouldn't expect PS5 games to run at higher resolutions than XSX games but so much goes into graphics nowadays. Maybe XSX has an unknown bottleneck where all that power can't go towards extra pixels.

Also with variable rate shading and all the reconstruction techniques that will probably become standard next gen, we might not even be able to use resolution as a proper power test. I'm excited!
