Yeah, this is probably the biggest week (software-wise) for PS4 of the year. Its going to be a pretty bad year for PS4 HW.

Nintendo dropped the forecast to 20m it was clear since early last year they won't reach it.

17m is what they expect now.

Nintendo broke their net profit expectations for the fiscal year already.
That's insane.
Hardware is disappointing and no 20 million but in overall sense it's still very good.

Good god those software numbers.

I was talking about this in the PS4 sales thread, so I thought I might as well do a full prediction here. We now have two years of Switch sales and I'm gonna predict its yearly sales in the future now for a bit of fun. If anyone else wants to join to make it interesting that would be cool :D

Let's look at 3DS, Wii and WiiU as a guidance for how Nintendo platforms go YOY.

3DS: 12.5M (2011), 13.3M (+6%), 14.0M (+5%), 8.9M (-35%), 7.8M (-12%) 7.3M (-6%), 6.6M (-10%), 3.5M (-47%) LT=74M

Wii: 3M (2006), 16.5M (+450%), 24.1M (+46%), 21M (-13%), 17.3M (-18%), 11.5M (-34%), 5.1M (-56%), 2.0M (-61%) LT=101M

WiiU: 2.1M (2012), 3.0M (+43%), 3.5M (+17%), 3.6M (+3%), 1.1M (-69%) LT=0 lmao

So the 3DS had a very strange trajectory, as it sustained sales in the low-mid teens, had a sudden collapse and then sustained sales around 7-8M for a while before dropping off again. The sustained sales were helped by launches like 2DS and new 3DS and Switch will have new versions similar to this. Wii was much more standard, as was WiiU although it died very quickly. Peak year for all three was the third year except WiiU which was basically flat in its fourth year.

I think Switch will be somewhat of a cross between 3DS and Wii, I can't see any reason for a collapse in sales like the 3DS had, but it won't peak quite so high as the Wii either. Switch will probably peak in its 3rd year (this year) but not drop too much the following year. My prediction:

Switch: 13.5M (2017), 17M (+26%), 20M (+18%), 17.5M (-12%), 13M (-25%), 9M (-31%), 5M (-44%), 2M (-66%), LT=97M

Its going to have better legs than Wii thanks to new HW revisions, but a smaller peak in sales. It will beat the lifetimes sales of WiiU and 3DS combined, as would be expected of this hybrid console. I think it lands about 15% higher than the LT of 3DS+WiiU. Successor comes end of 2022/ early 2023.

Battlefield V Did Not Meet Sales Expectations Despite Selling 7.3 Million Copies | ResetEra

Quote
During EA's fiscal earnings call today, CEO Andrew Wilson announced that Battlefield V missed its sales expectations for the holiday quarter.

Wilson attributed Battlefield V's underperformance to several factors. First was the game's month-long delay from October 19 to November 20, which pushed the title into a busier holiday season. Wilson also pointed to prioritizing single-player content over Battlefield V's still unreleased battle-royale mode as a contributing factor to the poor sales. Later in the call, CFO Blake Jorgensen offered specific numbers: Battlefield V has sold 7.3 million copies, putting it 1 million units below the company's expectations.  Click to expand...  Source: EA Conference Call Via Game Informer

What's interesting is that it didn't meet sales expectations but still sold 7.3 million copies... I would say that's pretty unexpected.

Nice to get a sales update. And lol at the people in that thread. Sure, these publishers often have way too high expectations, but this isn't one of those cases. This is less than half of the sales of BF1 in the same time period, you can't blame EA for expecting a bit more than this.

Now this is impressive, 2.5M players in one day with absolutely no marketing more than 4 hours before launch.

Red Dead Redemption 2 Sold-In more than 23 million units to date, online performance better than GTA Online | ResetEra

RDR Online had better opening than GTA Online

23 million.... Not bad  ;D

GTAV had shipped 32.5M by the end of 2013, so this is pretty comparable. Much better than I expected.

LT sales of red dead redemption are 15M.
