Pay wall probably.  TLDR version is we intentionally collide a satelight into an asteroid on Monday just to see if we can change its obit.   A test run of planetary defense.

Seems like the kind of thing legend would post.

shame. I honestly thought this thread was made by legend until I read the end

I was honestly surprised anyone but legend responded here.

I generally read legends threads about sci fi. Even those where he just posts by himself

Oh. Well I'll keep posting them!

Gonna be fun to see. For the first time in human history, we have the ability to protect Earth from space rocks.

(This is a really small test, but still)

Are we sending Bruce Willis with a big drill? Because that has always seemed like the most logical plan humanity has ever came up with

SWORDF1SH

Can we blast Phil Spencer and his smug face into an asteroid?

That'd be stupid.

Need to send Steve Buscemi too.

I'm frustrated with their Activision comments but that's a bit uncalled for  :P

ah, i love me a good count down timer.   how long until we really know if it worked though?  i figure it will take a few months before we can measure with certainty that the orbit has been changed.

NASA is smart. They are impacting a small asteroid that orbits a bigger asteroid. Makes it a lot easier to track changes. I'm just guessing but I'd expect a basic confirmation pretty quickly.

Edt: yup, basic results within a week.

Can someone ELI5 how asteroids have moons.

Do they have a gravitational pull?

I thought not.

This looks like something from the 90's. Why is NASA's stream so bad!?
