You know a thread is going to be a winner when it starts out quoting the dictionary....

Every so often in the realm of gamers i see a discussion about sony any their absolute need to have a mascot.   afterall nintendo has mario and xbox has master chief.  how could sony possibly survive without one and is sackboy or kat or nathon drake popular and good enough to function as their mascot.

NO!

Mascots are used to embody the identity of the group it represents.

for nintendo mario does a good job.   mario embodies that family friendly, light hearted fun, and simplicity that represents all of nintendo's products.  regardless of whether you're buying nintendo's games, hardware, or other endeavors that theme rings true in all of their products.

for xbox master chief has done a good job.   master chief embodies cool and competitive that represents what MS historically done with xbox.  they make games that target teens with a large focus on online and competitive elements.

but playstation is a different beasty.  they have (for a long time now at least) focused on diversity.  "arty" things like SotC, TLG, journey.  "cool" things like uncharted, GoW.   "kiddy" things like ratchet, LBP, knack.  "weird" things fat princess, hohokum.   "adult" things like heavy rain, TLoU.

playstation is a brand that actively defies being defined by any singular identity and as such no mascot could every represent playstation.   no, in fact, the lack of any mascot is what best represents playstation's identity,..  a brand that can be anything it wants to be at any particular moment.

They dont need a mascot. Their brand name is stronger than any in the industry. They have been building their brand to represent gaming. And thats a better approach

I agree.

A bad Halo makes xbox look bad, but a bad GOW can just be a bad GOW. Sony can rebound by making the next first party game great.

Although long live Knack.
