Global shortage in computer chips 'reaches crisis point' | Technology sector | The Guardian

Quote
The chip shortage looks set to persist for some time yet. It can take up to two years to get complex semiconductor production factories up and running, and manufacturers are in the process of significantly raising prices for the second time in less than a year.

"There is no sign of supply catching up, or demand decreasing, while prices are rising across the chain," says Campling. "This will cross over to people in the street. Expect cars to cost more, phones to cost more. This year's iPhone is not going to be cheaper than last year."

I guess I'll be sticking with my cheap cpu and gpu for longer than expected.

What happened to manufacturing?  Did some semiconductor plants get destroyed?

No.
So the story is that demand has skyrocketed.
PC demand grew 20% compared to last year.
Zoom demand grew by 30x in 5 months.

MS teams also saw huge increases:

So you could say demand tripled (made up number), and supply had no room to grow.

But that's what I mean though, you figured the big players would have been creating new foundries years ago with the assumption of increased demand, even if demand today is more than what's projected.  These shortfall aren't recent.  They've been going on for half a decade.
