i guess here as is as good as anywhere to post my observation of the day.

i've been checking twice daily for ps5's but just because i'm also looking for switch and xbox.

for all of january all three basically stayed sold out.  i did see switch about twice a week but it seemed to sell out in just a few hours every time.   i saw xbox series s once but never saw a series x.  i saw a ps5 once but never a ps5 DE.

just yesterday switch got a restock by me.   what i was surprised to see is the stock was only 3 and now 24 hours later they still have those 3 units.  so it seems like switch demand is catching up a bit.   all the same we are halfway though feburary so switch should still have a huge month as i have seen several stocking and sellouts this month.  i was just really, really surprised to see those 3 units linger for 3 of my bi-daily checks.

great numbers for january though.   i just wish i could find a ps5.   june 11th baby.

You didn't put NPD in the title!

Also software really needs to be highlighted this month. COD BOCW is now in the top 20 best selling games of all time in the US in just 3 months. Ridiculous. COD, AC and Miles are still the top 3 games:

Switch games doing insane considering no digital, Playstation exclusives are doing extremely well too.

Three in the top 10 of the last 12 months rolling, Spidey climbing 2 places this month shows its selling a lot with new PS5 stock too. It also means Miles has outsold FF7R by revenue and it is now the 5th best selling PS4/PS5 exclusive by revenue. Ghost is doing better than it and is at #4. Here's the rankings:
  • Spider-Man
  • God of War
  • TLOU Part II
  • Ghost of Tsushima
  • Spider-Man Miles Morales
  • Horizon or FF7R
  • Horizon or FF7R

Regarding hardware, Welfare did the maths on the info we got on PS5:

PS5 Hardware Estimates

" highest dollar sales total for a January month since the Nintendo Wii in January 2009. "

Wii 2009: 679K * $250 = $169,750,000

PS5 is less than that

The next likely candidates for what PS5 surpassed is the following

Wii 2010: 466K
360 2011: 381K
PS4: 271K

Wii was at $199 in 2010, so the revenue would be $93.2M

3/5ths of 360 sales were Kinect bundles which sold for $299/$399 while non bundled S sales were either the 4GB $199 or 250GB $299. Taking the average MSRP for the Kinect bundles ($349) and standard SKU ($249) that puts revenue at $118.1M

PS4 revenue at $399 would be $108.4M

So the lowest PS5 revenue is at is $118M, but I'll put it at $120M, with the uper limit being $169M

If all units were $499, then the PS5 sold between 240K and 338K

If 80% of all units were $499 and the rest $399, then PS5 sold between 250K and 350K

If 70% of all units were $499 and the rest $399, then PS5 sold between 255K and 360K
So we're looking at roughly 240 - 360k for PS5.

I can't help but wonder whether XBS fell short of XB1 and we would have heard if it beat it. Revenue per unit would be lower due to XB1 being $499 at the time and XBS has the $299 series S, so it makes sense that if it doesn't beat XB1 for units it doesn't beat it for revenue either. XB1 Jan 2014 was so low though, and XBS did well in the UK this Jan.

Legend

Amazing!!!

And who ever would have expected Sucker Punch to outdo Guerilla with their transition to PS4? The Killzone to Horizon jump seemed like a once in a generation event and yet Infamous to Ghost happened as well.

I really need to get back into playing it.

Ranges from Era prediction results:

373k < Switch < 389k
254k < PS5 < 270k
XBS < 164k

and if the Switch >381k holds and is correct, PS5 upper bound decreases to 267k

So could say:

381k < Switch < 389k (385k)
254k < PS5 < 267k (260k)
XBS < 164k (150k?)

I did analysis based on the points system used in the Era predictions and got 83k < XBS < 135k

So yes, PS5 doubled XBS in January NPD, that is completely unexpected.

I dunno.  xbox could have just as easily doubled ps5.  it's 100% stock limited at this point so all this says is sony shipped more.

Yes?

Yes?
is that confusion?  I was really only responding to the "completely unexpected" bit.

I mean everyone who follows video games knows they're out of stock and its all about supply, and I'd expect you'd know that I know it too.

My comment was obviously about the supply chain. XBS outsold PS5 in January in the UK (meaning they sent more units for the who need the clarification  :o ) and the two markets usually follow similar trends, so this was a very unexpected result. Even compared to the holidays, XBS shipped about 3/4 of PS5's amount in the US, so for Jan to drop to around 1/2 that's weird. Either its a trend of xbox really struggling with supply after the initial holiday push, or January was just a blip.
