Updated.
Some say it's cause PS5 is coming.

Really it's just because Sony said screw it and announced every game they had in 2016.

kitler53

looking at that list i think sony needs to create a few more studios to compensate for painfully long development cycles.

Or buy a few indies up like a certain other publisher did

Horizon

looking at that list i think sony needs to create a few more studios to compensate for painfully long development cycles.

They are building one in San Diego. I think there other issues is they haven't invested in enough studios or some investments haven't panned out. Santa Monica's new I.P got cancelled which would have been a new I.P and most likely added something to the line up in 2015 or 2016. Japan Studio have been a mess for years and only starting to get some consistency but pretty much all of their games were in development like TLG and GR2. They need to find a new I.P but it's hard. They also have London Studio and North West studio just doing VR games. I do think 14 studios would be the sweet spot but ND,Santa Monica, Guerrilla and Japan Studio have to be more consistent for this to work as they are the biggest devs. ND, Guerrilla and Japan studio have done to be fair but Santa Monica have only had one all gen basically. I also think as someone alluded to new announcements in 2015 and 2016 of which there were tons could have spread out. Death Stranding should have been in E3 2017 and Days Gone should have been E3 2017. TLOU PT 2 should have been announced this year.

Now that it is 2019, I'm ready to hype up next gen.

Horizon 2 a launch title? Hurt Killzone shadowfall so the devs might not want to do that again.

Horizon 2 a launch title? Hurt Killzone shadowfall so the devs might not want to do that again.

What I'm thinking should happen is that they announced TLoU2 to be cross gen. The PS4 version releases in Oct, while the PS5 version releases in Nov with the PS5. Then have bloodborne 2 release in early 2021, then Horizon 2 in holiday 2021.

LindaDutton

I do not when PS 5 come out, this is so amazing that how soon we get the result.

On April 2016 SIE announced the formation of ForwardWorks Corporation, a studio that is aimed to deploy new services toward the ever-expanding smart device market. Over the past years they released several mobile titles based on intellectual properties of Sony Interactive Entertainemnt or IP's that are strongly connected to the Playstation Brand.

OP is getting ready for next gen, and has been updated.
Some fun things:
-Japan Studio has 5-6 games under development at any time according to an interview with SIE Japan Studio.
-I don't have as much information for London, they don't tend to make as many big games, but they are probably equally capable.
-Polyphony Digital may very well be set for a new game soon.
- Guerilla Games is likely in the same boat.
-Insomniac is huge.  They just released 2 big games the past two years and a few smaller titles to boot.  If that continues, we are off to a big generation.

-Naughty Dog and SSM are kind of mysterious.  SSM tends to do a lot of development support and ND has had instances where they've done development on two games simultaneously. They're big enough that they could surprise with a new game, but I'm going to say probably not.

-Bend, Media Molecule and Sucker Punch both are probably not going to have anything soon.  Dreams and GoT seem likely to be ported to PS5.

Overall I'm feeling really good about Sony's early PS5 development.  Might be even better than any previous gen.

Wasn't quite so sure a year ago.  Didn't seem like they had enough.

ND are always working on 2 projects,.. they are just staggered.  They will have started on whatever they intend to do next already but it will still be years out because they are almost certainly in pre-production phase.   with that semi-mysterious stand along multiplayer they may even have 3 projects in the works.

I am probably misremembering.

I know when the last of us came out, everyone was talking about them having two teams.

But I thought there was an interview later where they talked about that there aren't exactly two distinct teams.  I am probably misremembering because I can't find the article right now.  I was under the impression that people get moved around a lot and they might have most of the studio working on a game with prototyping on the side or they might have a couple of groups working on games.

semantics?

if two teams means that people A are assigned to project A and people B are assigned to project B than yeah,.. your right.   i don't really see it that way for ND thought.   They are fully capable of working on two AAA games at a time.   where other studios do mass hiring during "production" and then a mass firing shortly after release ND maintains their employees by having rolling contributions to various projects.

I mean, their are 3 phases of game development: pre-production, prototyping, and production.

ND seemed to align their teams not to a project but to these phases.  so basically the prototyping never really ends.  when one "game" is ready for production they start prototyping the next game.  when one game is finished with production they start producing the next game.

so my point is they output 2 teams worth of content.
