In 5 years, we will have higher resolution headsets. With how fast VR has been changing, the resolution we are likely even to reach retina display quality. We already have PiMax which has 2 4K screens.
The big game changer here though is foveated rendering. Michael Abrash was talking about removing 95% of the rendering resolution.
That's huge.
While technically VR has to do more work, it is also capable of cutting out about 95% of the regular work.
