Parasite $501k monday up 16% from Sunday after its win, crazy unheard of jump even for an BP winner. For example, Green Book fell 34% last year, Shape of Water fell 19%. Film is due to expand to over 2000 theatres this weekend as well.

Jumanji is also having a great leggy run, only down 8% from last week on Monday.

Sonic reviews are fairly good at 65% RT, about what I expected. Might go and watch it...

Box office wise it seems to be breaking out past expectations. $3m thursday previews is okay but true friday is tracking for about $19m which would be crazy. 4 day opening of $60m+ possible. If it pulls off these kind of numbers and performs similar overseas it should make a good profit.

Xevross

95% verified RT score and A cinemascore for Sonic. Audiences are loving it, great to see.

That resetera thread about it beating pikachu might turn out correct after all!

Onward debuted with $39.11M dom. Awful, no other way to put it. That's Pixar's worst opening for 22 years sing Bug's Life in 1998, and that's not adjusted for inflation of course.

International debut is even worse. With a big budget of $175M+ this one is making a massive loss for Disney.

Onward looks so dull. I cant believe it's a pixar movie. Seems so devoid of soul

Wow that's really harsh and from what I've read far from the truth. It definitely doesn't look like a pixar film but apparently it still has a lot of soul and is an emotional tale. I guess its just quite simple and wasn't advertised very well.

This is the second time I've heard of this movie.

How are the markets in general? Bond was delayed to Thanksgiving due to coronovirus so maybe Disney will view the loss from that angle.

Not a good sign for Mulan though.

Ironically, I think it looks better than their next movie, "Soul."

Having a dad with just legs sounds like a classic Pixar premise. Sure the rest of the film feels like Dreamworks but that core story gives me hope.

I've seen a lot of adds but I forget its name every single time.

Not great, they're trending down although its not a disaster.

Eh, Mulan deserves to die. Such a shaming remake removing everything that was good about the original including removing characters that certain groups of people really cared about. I'm going to enjoy watching Mulan fail.

Uh what. Soul looks amazing, there's quite a lot of buzz about it too, many experts think its going to top the domestic box office for the year.

Box office seems to have collapsed this weekend. New openers are all doing badly, long term holdovers are dropping more than normal. Onward is dead, its seeing a monumental 60%+ drop from opening week, unheard of for Pixar. COVID-19 doing a lot of damage to Hollywood.

Edit: saturday numbers are even worse, Onward looking -75%

Double edit: total weekend BO estimate is the lowest grossing weekend since September 1998.

Is this the lowest weekend in history?

I don't know how far back the numbers go but I don't think even WW2 was this bad.

Well that was thursday like I said but it may be the lowest in history. The drop from the start of the week is mad, Onward grossed $750k on monday (and that was already really bad).

the-pi-guy

Boxoffice: only 14 movie theaters open in the US. And the top film this week made less than $2000. Crazy.

Me: am watching Into the Spiderverse. Very delightful movie. Visuals are really special.
