Is this because Microsoft is going with Smart Delivery? Can't do paid upgrades if it's supposed to just be the same sku.

Hopefully this is the last time cross gen games are handled so poorly.

This is a complete mess. At least PS version is somewhat simple, you can buy the PS4 game for $60 then pay $10 to upgrade when you have a PS5, or just straight up buy the cross gen version for $70.

VentureBeat: Call Of Duty: Black Ops Cold War will run at 4K@120 fps (with Ray Tracing for lighting and shadows) on the next generation News | ResetEra

Seems like the game will also use the haptic feedback on the DualSense.

With next-generation consoles, the game will play at 4K resolution and refresh rates at 120hz. Cold War will use haptic controllers. The solid-state drives (SSDs) with flash memory in the new consoles will have faster load times, and that means that the loading screens will be gone, with seamless transitions between cinematics and gameplay.

"We want to make sure that the framerate is responsive, and that it feels like there's nothing on the technical side preventing you from having a good time," Bunting said.

The game will feature a global illumination system that makes use of real-time ray tracing. That means the lighting and shadows will be accurate, with rays of light bouncing around a scene in a realistic manner. You'll see the effects of this in things like Woods' pickup truck (with the fictional brand name Bannerocks), which has a run-down look that feels like it's from another era. You see duct tape, cracked vinyl, and a CB radio in the interior.

"With the power of the next-gen systems, we'll be able to add even more detail and put even more love into everything we create," said Katie Sabin, a vehicle artist at Raven Software.  Click to expand... Click to shrink...

So this is all pretty confusing.

The PS4 physical standard edition is $59.99.
The PS5 physical standard version doesn't come with the PS4 version.  But Activision says it's $69.99.
The PS cross version is supposed to also be $69.99 but it comes with both.

The XBO physical standard edition is $59.99.
The XSX physical standard version does come with the XBO version.
The Xbox cross version is supposed to also be $69.99 and it comes with both.

So basically the best ways to get the game are:
- buy the digital versions
- buy the PS4 version, upgrade to the PS5 version
- buy the XSX version.

All for the same price to get the same experience.

So it feels like Activision figured out a way to do Smart Delivery on both systems.

Only weird downsides are:
PS4 version might not be included with PS5?  Seems like it should.
XBO version doesn't allow upgrades. I'm guessing MS doesnt allow this.

I think you're wrong? The XSX physical disc ($70) includes the XB1 version as well, you put the disc into either machine and it gives you the corresponding version of the game.

The XB1 physical disc ($60) gives you the XB1 version only, which can be played on XSX through BC but obviously doesn't give the native XSX version.

There's only the weird distinction for this game because Activision want you to spend $70 to get access to the native next gen version. Otherwise with smart delivery it'd just be the one disc like the XSX version here. Not being able to upgrade the physical XB1 version though is quite odd, I guess there'd be some weirdness with the different versions of the game which means MS can't do it.

Playstation is much more simple. PS4 version is $60 and can be played for free on PS5 through BC, or spend $10 to upgrade to native PS5 version. The "cross gen version" is basically just pre-paying for the $10 upgrade giving you both native versions of the game upfront.

PS5 version of the game is $70 and can obviously only be played on PS5.

That error was some laziness on my part.  I just copied and pasted the PS bit and forgot to change that difference.

Just seems like they didn't want to ship a second disk.
