Nikkei rumor: Nintendo considering a smaller Switch model by end of Fiscal 2019 | ResetEra

Nintendo is apparently planning on introducing a smaller, cheaper Switch by the end of the 2019 Financial Year.

Although Nintendo had a very strong year, they didn't end on as strong of a note that they were expecting. The Japanese gaming giant was forced to reduced their yearly expected sales down to 17 million at the earnings release for the period between April 2018 and March 2019. They were previously hoping for 20 million units between the same time-frame.

Do note Nintendo CEO Shuntaro Furukawa mentioned late last year that their initial internal goal of 20 million was certainly "not easy".

To combat this Japanese publication Nikkei reports that Nintendo will be bringing a cheaper, smaller Switch variant to the market sometime in the 2019 Financial Year (April 2019 to March 2020). The report mentions this variant of the Switch will be more "portable" and "easy to carry around", probably something to replace the 3DS? Or maybe a Switch that's fully portable without the docking ability?  Click to expand...      It was also mentioned that this Switch will come at a cheaper price, something the shareholders have been requesting for a while. This will however have to be done without compromising on functionality.  Click to expand...     Simba1 said:    "The company said that 'couldn't comment' on their plans for the product, but has informed multiple suppliers and game development companies that they intend to release them as early as 2019. According to their affiliates, they are 'miniaturizing the console with portability and playing outdoors in mind, as well as cutting features to reduce the price and expand the userbase."

What do you guys think of this? A smaller, cheaper switch to tap into that DS audience makes sense, but I have no idea how they'd do it.

A handheld only version kind of defeats the entire purpose of the Switch. And surely they have to keep detachable joycons? Would they just make a Switch that's smaller and cheaper?

If I were to guess I'd say they make a smaller model which can still be docked, but the docks are sold separately for those who want it. It would be better if they ensured joyocons were the same size as well.

Alternatively they could release two Switch lites at the same time. One which is handheld only and one which is TV only. That would be interesting.

A smaller switch seems really hard to design. Joycons force it to be a certain height and the screen forces it to then have the same width. Only thing they could do is put black bars above and below the screen so the width could be decreased but then it wouldn't fit in a dock.

It basically either just needs to be a normal switch with the dock sold separately, or a 2DS equivalent that lacks features. I don't see how they could make a version without detachable joycons though since lots of first party software requires them. Super Mario Party for example can only be played with separate joycons.

Very heavy rumours (its practically confirmed) that there's going to be a Direct next week, most likely Wednesday. Its about time!

This is what's been said on Era so far by a few reliable insiders:

  • Direct next week (13th).
  • Metroid Prime Trilogy, Mario Maker 2, Pikmin 3 port and BoxBoy! are happening (the former will possibly be in the Direct).
  • Doubled down on 2D Zelda.
  • Pikmin 4 restarted development at some point.
  • Third-Party support will improve this year; especially Japanese stuff. Some unpredictable surprises as well.
    • Nate specifically mentioned that Kingdom Hearts was being tested/considered. Not 3 though.

Why would they double down on 2d zelda after botw?

What do you mean? They can easily make 2d and 3d zeldas at the same time.

It sounds like Nintendo still didn't figure out next gen development.  Pikman and Metroid restarting isn't good.  I'm assuming a new 3D Zelda will probably take 5+ years to develop.  They need something so they always go back to 2D when that happens.

If they remake Link's Awakening then that's ok in my book.  ;D

Well fudge that noise, what a waste that would be.

It does sound like a Nintendo move though.

Well a post saying next week that was posted last week does indeed imply this week.
