General impressions are that the combat is great, but the open world feels like something from a decade ago.

Souls games are incredibly dated open world wise too it's just they disguise it behind the lack of any guidance or structure. They're all the best at combat and character customisation/depth. Rise of the Ronin should have focused on it too.

to be fair,.. i haven't read any of the reviews.

...but i'm guessing the summary is that this game needed at least 100M more budget to achieve much better graphics and bloated gameplay systems because as much as we are all appalled that game budgets are too big we as consumers can't be happy with anything less than magnificence these days?

regardless i wasn't planning to pick this up.    i have too many games with far bigger budgets in my backlog to get to first.  im.the.problem..

I'd say the reviews should be higher. An 8 might be a fairer score. The combat is very addictive and there's lots of depth with customisation and weapons. There's also lots of characters to bond with and learn more about. Story is interesting enough so far and there lasting decisions to make. Like at the end of chapter 1 you have a major decision which will have a big outcome on the story for the rest of the game.
