Title: Recommend Me Some Games.
Post by: kitler53 on Mar 16, 2023, 08:42 PM
okay,

so you all are probably aware of this:
https://vizioneck.com/forum/index.php?topic=10027.msg281653#msg281653

to help me out in my decision making please recommend me some games.  The rules are:
1. the game is purchasable on steam
2. preferably the game is not on ps5
3. my main reason for considering a steam deck is to play while commuting so
 A. the game should be single player-able
 B. the game cannot require internet

That said my gaming preferences are:
- puzzle games
- metroidvanias
- platformers
- 2D / top down / or retro games in general.
- for the form factor i'm not really looking for big story driven games like God of War.  i'll be playing in short bursts (~30 min at a time) so things that are "pick-up-and-play" are preferred for my primary use case.

Example Games I've really enjoyed portably (on vita):
- Stealth (https://store.steampowered.com/app/209190/Stealth_Bastard_Deluxe/)
- Super Meat Boy (https://store.steampowered.com/app/40800/Super_Meat_Boy/)
- Knytt Underground (https://store.steampowered.com/app/248190/Knytt_Underground/)
- Teslagrad (https://store.steampowered.com/app/249590/Teslagrad/)
- Rayman Origins (https://store.steampowered.com/app/207490/Rayman_Origins/) and Legends (https://store.steampowered.com/app/242550/Rayman_Legends/)
- Retro City Rampage (https://store.steampowered.com/app/204630/Retro_City_Rampage_DX/)
- Dokuro (https://store.steampowered.com/app/317840/Dokuro/)

The spring sale is going so bonus points for games that are on sale.

I think we have some different tastes, but some things I would play on a SteamDeck:

Celeste
Castle Crashers
Halo
Portal
Undertale
World of Goo

You can play non steam games on steamdeck, just requires a few extra steps.

Papers please
Her Story
Event[0] (requires typing, not sure how that works on deck)
The case of the golden idol
Antichamber
The captain

is papers please really any good?  i stumbled across it earlier and watched the video.  from the video it looks terrible.

added antichamber and event[0] to my wishlist.   it's listed as "playable".  "Entering some text requires manually invoking the on-screen keyboard".    not sure how much text entry is required but it could get annoying i suppose.

i remember you raving about her story.  i have "telling lies" downloaded to my ps5.   i know you said it wasn't as good but i figured it would be a good taster to if i like the type of game or not.

oh, and also added these to my wishlist:

- Ori will of the wisps
- Ori and the blind forest
- portal bridge constructor (thought about it when Pi mentioned world of goo)
- stephen's sausage roll (i remember legend glowing about it)
- hi-fi rush
- baba is you

Papers please is pretty good yeah. Kinda an experimental game but it really pulls it off. Inspired a lot of copycats.

Event[0] requires a lot of text, but with a touch screen it could be fine. All the computers on the ship use freeform text entry and they're the main selling point of the game.

Telling Lies is a fine primer. Immortality is also a good primer but I disliked the gameplay in it.

Portal bridge constructor was the first game I ever played on series x and I hated it lol

Stephen's sausage roll received a lot of praise from puzzle devs like Jonathon Blow, but I never finished it. I wrongly thought I had seen all the game had to show and I wasn't loving the puzzles so I quit.

Also for 10% off maybe I'll buy a deck too.

And if I can get epic games store on it too then that's even better. I have soooo many games on it that I got for free or some of their really good sales

I've decided not to buy  :P
10% is a pretty small discount and I'd rather just buy it once I actually need it.

welp.  it's official.

I got the middle teir steam deck.  64 Gb seemed too small to even just install 1 modern AAA game.  games like destiny 2 are like 100 Gb these days.  still plan on getting an SD card eventually but not right away.

for games:
I'm going to get emulation up and running to put my snes games on it.   might have a go at dolphin too.

was actually pretty disappointed in game selection on steam.   never really grasped how many PC games aren't on steam like Diablo. I knew it but never really grasped it.  also a lot of games I looked at aren't supported by steam deck like sunset overdrive.

ended up spending $40 including a lot of games I already own.  just felt like replaying them I guess and they were very cheap.  a few new titles though.
- portal 1 and 2
- Valkyria Chronicles 1 and 4
- ori 1 and 2
- the room 1 and 2
- half life 2 plus episode 1 and 2
- super meat boy
- knytt underground
- pixel junk shooter ultimate
- dragon's dogma
- portal bridge constructor
- titan souls
- down well

+ (and it was free but I'm really excited for) the looker

it's here!

i'm working so i'm not even going to turn it on but holy fudge is this this big.   i remember vita getting shame on all the time for not actually being "portable" because it would stick out the top of your back pocket and they'd just choose a phone instead.   well fuk,... this thing is like 4-5 vita's duck taped together.   i'm going to get a fuking purse to take this to work.

Spoiler for Hidden:
i already have a man-purse

controls felt okay i guess.  should be good enough for must controller based games.   rocket league is the only game in which I "claw grip (https://i.redd.it/d1ao8h175l181.jpg)" and i can tell it ain't going to work out for me.  generally speaking the R/L2 feels good but the R/L1 does not.   it has a nice man-sized bump though so i can hold it much more comfortably than the switch.   i didn't realize it had buttons on the back-side until now.  I guess the L/R 4/5 could take the place of L/R 2 for me but i didn't find them particularly comfortable either.   maybe i'm just not used to having those kinds of buttons.

Thought it seemed pretty awesome though.
Title: Re: Recommend Me Some Games.

yeah, and i'm not entirely complaining.  if anything i'm more confident than ever that sony could make a psvita 2 following the same form factor and get every ps5 game working on it at a lower resolution.

i'd greatly prefer that to this steam deck.   i have nearly 1000 games on psn and a constant stream of new ones thanks to ps+ extra.   i'd rather be double invested into sony's platform than split platform even if steam has a couple of games i want to play that aren't on ps.   i don't need a single exclusive.  i just want my existing library on a "portable" device.
Title: Re: Recommend Me Some Games.
Post by: kitler53 on Mar 23, 2023, 07:46 PM
this is a weird device.

i can kind see why some people rave about it because it is a mobile PC but it's kind of a shaming gaming device.  some initial thoughts:

1. any statements of "it's my steam library but portable" is greatly exaggerated.

there are a ton of games i wanted to buy and play that are listed as straight up "unsupported".  i don't know what the actual % is but it's pretty dang high.  i'd guess at least 33%.   even of the games that are supported a vast majority of those are "playable" not "verified".   i'd say no more than 25% of steam games are actually "verified" for this device.   it's pissed me off because quite a lot of games i had in my head as something i'd finally get to play i can't actually play.

2. it really is a fudgy PC in the worst way

i bought a game that was listed as "playable".  according to the description the only reason it wasn't "verified" was because it sometimes had small text.  okay fine,.. it's not a text heavy game so whatever i'll still buy.

fudgy crashes at load.  i can't play it.  no fudgy clue what to do.   go to the internet and after a lot of searching find some site that confirms other people can't play the game either and some dude gives a 1 word answer how to fix it and then i got to google that to try and figure out what the fuk he means and now i'm in my steam deck downloading new files and modifying advanced configurations to make the dang game run.

3. the touch screen is pretty much garbage.

i didn't hook a keyboard up to my device.  why should i have to?!?  all i wanted to do is play my games and that required a minimal amount of typing to get things like my router password typed out.  holy crud,.. like every 3rd touch is not registered.  i have to be really slow at typing because soo often it misses a letter.

4. nothing about the interface is actually built for steam deck

like nothing.  everything is the steam interface for PC where a mouse is expected.  yes i can navigate the interface.  it's not impossible but there is no optimization for controller navigation.  my navigation feels wildly unpredictable with respect to pushing up/down/left/right and to which part of the interface i jump to.  it's especially terrible on the store,.. i don't think i can do it on the device itself.  i'd view a PC as a required accessory.

one would think having a new device would be exciting and fresh and grab my attention for at least a while.  i messed around with it for a while last night but then just felt exhausted by it and went to my ps5.   i have a renewed appreciation for "dedicated consoles" right now.

Its a new generation/product. Generally these always have big issues and drawbacks. I think a steam deck 3 and after would be much better. I think the next version will solve some problems, but it will still have some issues

maybe,.. but i'm still very angry about #2.  if a game is listed as playable i should be able to play it without modifications.

Yeah that's not how it's supposed to work at all. I've heard lots of stories from devs thinking valve was pretty strict with steam deck testing, but maybe it's just because they have no experience with console verification.

I've been wanting a deck just so that I can make sure Hapax plays on it exactly like a PS4 game.

100% agree with you. Im not saying anything on your list isn't right. I think all of them are issues and you have every right to complain about them, and expect the majority to be fixed.

Im just saying that always beware of first generation hardware.

#5 oh boy are the gyros crud

tried out portal.   1st off,.. the default control scheme turns on: right analog, gyro, and track pad for camera controls.   maybe it's just me but i apparently lightly touch that track pad while holding the console.   my first impression was "holy crud this game is broken".   then i figured out where the control schemes area is and turned off the track pad.   tried gyro out just because of all the fanboys that say this is the greatest thing ever.   ...not going to find out here.  very unresponsive, only responded to my motion like half the time.   turned it off.   portal is a fun game with just dual analog.

I'm not locking myself out, but the ones I can't play on PS5 are more interesting to me.

and after my time with portal on steam deck,.. no I don't really want to play spiderman on the go.  just like with Vita,.. while playing all I could think is how much more enjoyable the game would be on a console with better graphics and more comfortable controllers.

I share those sentiments, but there's a covenience on playing with a handheld.  I don't have the time I used to to play, but I end up putting off games cause I want to play them on the big screen with my audio systems, etc.  I'll be like "I want to play xyz, but I have to go downstairs and setup." vs "Time to take out my GBA while I'm on the bus and play Final Fantasy".  I played FF 1-6 all on the bus/subway to university on my GBA/DS.  I wouldn't have played them otherwise.  So the point I was trying to make was; if you think you'll have more time playing something on the ride to work, then I say its worth playing it like that than waiting to setup on the big screen.

Frog Fractions is a really loved game that I hear people talk about a lot but it's very meta. Like I think it's hidden inside another game and not sold on its own.

Soda drinker pro was a game I thought was also a meta game like the others, but looking at reviews it might actually just be about drinking soda. Huh.

Never played any of them. Doki doki lit club might be more worth your time.

i'll have ~2x 30 min gaming sessions per day on my commute.   my point to point commute is 1 hour but only 30 minutes is on the train and the rest is walking.  that's another reason that games on my steamdeck won't be great with big epic story driven games.   i need to get in and get out of the game quite quickly.   pick-up and play is going to be best for me.

but sure,.. i'll probably play a bigger game or 2 along the way.  i bought valkaryia chronicles 1 and 2 simply because i love the games but also i wasn't really getting to them on playstation.  steam deck does have the ability to suspend a game (a detail i didn't even think to ask myself before buying) so it is possible to play a bigger game and quickly put it on hold.

but most of my time will still be on my playstation.   i don't always game (i like tv/books too) but i can spend 4 hours a night gaming if i want to.  that will be on my playstation.

heard about that.  it's currently wishlisted in both steam and playstation.   more likely to play on steamdeck tbh but i have a lot of games already from the steam sale.  probably a 1 year backlog if i just play everything i already bought.

also, i ordered an SD card.  want to get emulation working.  i could probably spent a year just replaying the R&C games if i can get those up and running.

have nes, snes, N64, gc, and PS2 functional.  so much effort but it's working now.

tomorrow morning is my first day of commuting.  including emulation I probably have 200 games to choose from.  ...I'll probably just listen to music.

nes, snes, N64, GameCube, wii, Gameboy, Gameboy advanced, ds, PS1, PS2 now set up.  quite sure I spent more time getting this working than I will playing these games.  ;D

so much work.  it's my first time on Linux so I've had to learn a lot.  didn't think it would take Soo much effort to learn such basic things like,.. how do you open a cmd prompt?

not sure I'll be able to get any other systems working.  my only big external HDD is formated as fat32 so my playstation can read it but that means a 4gb file size max. wouldn't be able to get a PS3 game on the system even if it would work.

tried playing on the train for a bit but quickly went back to music.   was stressed to begin with as music is better for that.   ...but dear God does it feel too big to be convenient while commuting.

yeah, I have a raspberry Pi but it really struggled on anything more recent than snes.  I could run N64 but most titles ran at like 10 fps.

steam deck is pretty awesome at being an emulator.
1. runs everything I've tried
2. portable when you want it to be with input for pretty much any system,.. like the touch screen worked well for DS titles.
3. can be docked with a tv if you want
4. dock has USB input for my classic controllers (snes)
5. Bluetooth support for modern controllers (PS5)

i got another "undisclosed" system up and running.  was surprised how easy it was and also how much higher quality the games run on steamdeck then on its native system.
