I expected.  Izeyoza.  
Basically you can apply to a University and say I'm going for Physics or I'm going for Math, or you can even just say you're undeclared.  If you are declared, you're put into that program.  The physics program, the math program, etc.  

You can easily take classes outside your program, and even are required to take some.  

But at my fiance's school, some of her higher up classes require her to be part of the Dietetic program.
That sounds like a really good system tbh. At our universities you just have to apply for a course and you do whatever topics are on that course. Some courses have a list of options and you pick a few of them to do but if you were doing physics then they'd all be physics topics.

There's a few courses which are more flexible and allow you to pick up topics from other courses but that's more rare.
