Yeah it broke some time over the past year with youtube deciding we lived in Sweden, so while fixing that I also added number of likes.

These are just temp videos to make sure it's all working. Currently set to update every 45 minutes.

Awesome! Adding likes is good so we can quickly see which ones are getting views from #ads

Its got more views than A Way Out though. Which is a shame, A Way Out was by far the best showing of any game.

Not when I made my comment.
It's seemingly doubled in the last half hour.

Will be interesting later on in the week to make graphs and stuff. I have no idea how I'll access that data, but this year I'm saving it all.

I spent far too long trying to format this into a nice looking graph in Excel, so I'm just posting the raw data with it.

Amusingly enough, that huge jump happened right after my post about its low view count. Meanwhile the like count shows no bumps or changes and is a near perfect straight line. Wonder if this is Youtube fuzzing the view counts or something else.

Once a video has over 300 views, each view has to be verified. It verifies them and then adds them in chunks, although its a bit inconsistent. Likes are just constantly added.

Yeah I know it does that, but this change happened around 20k views.

Also in the past Youtube would literally pause the view count until the next chunk is added. Now I think they interpolate between the chunks to keep the views always increasing.

Well I think at first it holds the view count really low before it starts to add them properly like you mentioned.

The Way Out trailer has the same jump at ~20k so I guess that's when they switch methods a second time.

Anthem is a game we know nothing about and that teaser trailer shows us nothing. What we should really judge is the reaction to the gameplay at MS's conference.

Battlefront 2 seems to be getting a lot of love. Well deserved. They clearly listened to fan feedback. They totally transformed the game from what the first one they did was to something much closer to the original Battlefront series.

Xbox E3 Briefing 2017 in under 3 minutes - 4K Trailer (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VkIekNIkRf0)

Microsoft removed this video.

It was really cringey and incredibly bad. Was trying to sell the xbox one x. I'll see if I can find a reupload.

Nah. That's too negative.

This threads more fun!

(also very few games have interesting dislike counts. It's less cluttered if we track those manually)

Yeah, doing this is interesting but also completely pointless. For some games, these videos will be a large proportion of their youtube views while for others it will be barely any, so how can you compare? Also videos get way more views on facebook nowadays.

Facebook is trash. The views are mostly from passive people not actually interested.

I'd be going off on a tangent but facebook videos are horrible and screw youtube creators over so much. It's been happening for a long time.

I've added some but they really make no sense most of the time.

That channel has tons of views for almost every video so I'd have to add basically all of them for it to make sense.

Instead of you only stick to official channels for most cases, the results are much more statistically meaningful and can be compared to other uploads from the past.

I don't know, often people don't try and find official channels to watch trailers, they just click on the first one they see, which is often the one with the highest views.

It might be good to compare views for videos on this channel alone

Previous years have more or less been the same.

The first links to go up on reddit, gaf, etc. are always from 3rd party uploaders. Some places go back and use official links once they're up, but most don't.

Nevertheless, I still feel it's a pretty good sample. If you only focus on specific channels year over year and compare games with each other from the same year, those outside variables seem to act pretty consistently.

Plus per video there's still interesting stuff like the like to view ratio and viewership over time.

Yes we thought about it before.  We had this discussion last year.   >:(

The spider man video has very similar view counts on this video and one in list. Can you add them together?
This is one of the biggest things Sony did!
Should we be adding rehosts/3rd party though?
Otherwise we'd have to search for all the MS rehosts with lots of views too.
Well we're making an interestometer aren't we? Not a which channel is more popularometer. How about we just find the most popular version of each trailer then? Most of the time it'll be on PS or xbox but we can replace it if there's another
Yeah I think that works.

I added the three you posted.
Legend was more strict about it in 2015 (but I think I saw some exceptions while looking).
Last year there were a handful of exceptions.

3D World had a lot of things going against it.

One thing was the e3 trailer itself wasn't very exciting at all. It wasn't until later in the year when they got a good trailer going for it that it started picking up more momentum. By that point it already had all he bad stigma going for it('Another New Super Mario Bros', 'Already on the 3DS', 'Not a real 3D Mario Game' etc.)

There's also the matter of Youtube itself changing. Odyssey was #1 on trending, and I believe the trending system has changed drastically over time.

I think you're one of the few.

I loved it so much! T rex opening was great, the frog reveal was great, the music was great, the fake ending was great, and going back to the dino was a perfect ending. It was just so perfectly executed.

The previous game's E3 trailer is hard to enjoy after seeing how perfect this one is.

I was just meaning the part when the song slows down and he's at his house with all the moons. Felt like it'd be the end of the trailer.

You underestimate how much I love over engineering things. The current system I have could easily do exactly what theirs is doing, but that's not what I wanted to do. This thread has always focused on only official uploads. I think including all videos is silly and just something people like because it makes the numbers bigger.

But I think it's safe to say most of you guys disagree with me. Next year I'll probably mix it up and track everything and include dislikes and comment counts.

How is it silly to do an actual meaningful comparison instead of completely wasting your time? People on youtube don't care if its from an official channel or not, that ones that are up first and gain lots of views are the popular ones. If we're actually making a "youtube gamer interestometer" then you actually want to make a system which measures the interest of youtube gamers.

Becaise it eleminates double views from the same person. You could have the system swap out the highest view count of the same video. That might be better.

What? You get double views from one person tracking just one video anyway. In fact, I'd say if people are re-watching a trailer they're more likely to go back to the one they saw before.

It only counts one view at once. You can repeat as many times as you like. But if you click replay on the video it doesn't count the view, you have to refresh the page. So if you visit again later it counts as another view

If the point is to see how popular a video is on YouTube, then of course I disagree.  Most people don't tend to look for an official channel.  They just search or they are given suggestions.

Ubisoft was really good about posting their videos as soon as things got announced.  Sony wasn't.  So if you wanted to see the new days gone trailer, you'd have to go to a third party channel to view it.

Unless you think a certain channels views are being raised by cheatery. (Sony's videos got caught for that themselves.).
I don't really see any reason not to include other sources to get a picture of YouTube views.

.
Xev getting fiesty.  :o
.
Every view gets counted, but what I recall is that YouTube does a ton of checking to determine the view.
So you watching a video a few times, will more than likely get counted those few times.
You watching a video once a day for 4 weeks, will get counted 28 times for example.

Because it's not meaningful either way. Tracking all videos on youtube is still far from the complete picture. You yourself talked about facebook videos, and there are tons of other sources that also effectively take away views. It's impossible to get the complete picture and no matter what the numbers are meaningless without context. I personally prefer sticking to official uploads because you have a far better understanding of everything and can tell why a video is doing better or worse than expected.

Kinda rude to call it wasting my time when I set this feature up to help Bwest The Youtube Gamer interestometer (http://vizioneck.com/forum/index.php?topic=2380.0) and have just been listening to people's desires. Last year the biggest complaint was videos being used as ads, so I started tracking like count for you guys. Now next year I'll add a way to group videos by game so more re-uploads can be added, if I even bother doing the thread at all. I've spent more time writing this post than it took to set up the op  :P

That's because YouTube does a lot of checking for views.  I just tested it and added 4 views to a video.  (And it takes a few seconds to update the viewpoint). Also over 300 views they do a lot of checking. Under 300 it's a lot more lenient.

Because it's not meaningful either way. Tracking all videos on youtube is still far from the complete picture. It really depends on what we are looking for though.  If we are looking to find how many people hear about a game online, that's pretty darn impossible.

But unless there is some trend like MS being bigger on Facebook and Sony being bigger on YouTube, there is still some sort of trend that we can get from YouTube.

Look at NPD, they don't have access to every store and an exact count.  But they can gleen a reasonable amount of information from what they have.  There are similar analyses with Twitter and Google search engines that are done. They obviously dont give the full picture, as Bing and Yahoo are also search engines.

More information is better unless it's biased in some way for some reason, which it absolutely might be.

Yeah.  I was linking the videos to everything shown in the E3 shows I did the threads for.
Ubi was really good, and the YouTube video was always up within minutes of them announcing on stage.

I don't recall Sony even having most videos by the time I went to bed.  Instead I posted whoever was one of the first.

Agreed. I think it's impossible to add every single upload of each video but setting a limit like top 3 or 5 is definitely better than having just one for each. In this case for example we have a GoW video with barely 1.5m views on the official channel but another upload has over 5m. That's a huge difference
