Let's keep discussions about the game in this thread, although reviews should go in the review thread.

What? WHAT?

Haha that first encounter killed me three times before I got the hang of it. Playing on hard. Also, That music at the start. Holy shame.

So what mode are you guys playing on? Resolution or performance?

I'm on pleb mode.

Spoiler for Hidden:
I thought it was Baldur. When he said brother he seemed to refer to Thor. Also Baldur is invincible/ doesn't feel pain in Norse mythology so it makes sense. He's definitely not dead. Seems to easy.

Just about to start up. I chose immersion for the hood although I did it via custom so I press the pad button to reveal the bus.

Choosing give me a balance experience difficulty.

Normal is fine. I only have difficulty when I've come across enemies a higher level than me. I'm not one to fight too strategically either, I just like smashing things to bits.

If you want a fairly difficult challenge then go for the hard difficulty, think its called give me a challenging experience.

When I heard there was lots of troll fights I was kinda worried that they would get repetitive, but they don't because they're just so dang fun to fight. Also there really isn't too many of them.

No and you can always change it (except from very hard)
Just start with hard. Some people say normal is too easy. Hard is very hard first when you're learning the mechanics but then it becomes oh so rewarding.

Just battled my first heavy draugrs. dang that battle was hard

Man there is so much side content in this game its unreal. A lot of it is high level though, so I get halfway through and then decide to do something else, which is kind of annoying.

Anyway, I've played probably over 10 hours today so its good to stop for now :D

Loving it so far, but it doesn't quite feel super top tier like TLOU yet. At least it'll be much longer.

There's so much to it. I'm enjoying it more than tlou atm. If what I hear about the late game is true I'm not going to stop thinking that either!

I enjoyed my first 3 hours more then the last of us first 3 hours. But that game starts off slow anyway where God of war doesn't. Will be interesting to compare but God of wars setting appeals to me more so I'll probably prefer it. Sadly I'll probably only get another couple of hours in before Sunday night. Busy weekend.

Oh and performance mode on a 1080p TV all the way. Resolution mode only looks a little better while standing still but performance mode is night and day better in motion. Everything is so much clearer.

I won't be getting a 4k TV for a few years so can't wait for the inevitable 4k 60fps ps5 version

pretty good so far, glad i could turn down the camera sway. loving the combat.

all around i get vibes from other sony greats. especially tlou. some of the things the kid says reminds me of how ellie would bug joel. after that first fight with the big dude i was wondring around looking to see if there was any chests etc and he said "um the house is over this way, duh" lol made me laugh.

So far it doesn't seem like this game is revolutionary or anything, it just is put together very well.

The story is very minimal so far, and very basic. Reminds me of TLOU in that sense, the actual plot isn't that crazy but what makes the story great is the character and relationship building. I guess I'll see if GoW has as good a final act/ ending for a payoff of all this. I'm loving all the extra conversations they have when wondering around, so many other games would just be filled with silence but this fills every moment with something to listen to.

The side content is fun so far, but a lot of it is a bit longer than I'd like, I feel like I'm barely ever doing any story progression, which just adds to how slow the main plot feels right now.

Combat is, of course, glorious. I can't think of any 3rd person melee combat I've liked more apart from Bloodborne. Boss fights/ minibosses have been great too.

Overall around 12 hours in feels like around a 9.5/10 game so far to me. Hope it improves a bit to elevate itself to GOAT tier. Basically, the story just needs to pick up.

I love all the Icelandic in the game though lol, especially the pronunciation. I mean, most of the time it's close but still a bit weird. All the trolls have Icelandic names, the spells ('kveikja' means illuminate etc), the enemy types (draugr=draugur=ghost). Even the songs have Icelandic in them!

Playing on GoW difficulty, will probably restart on the next lowest setting because the camera sucks balls and I'm tired of dying to enemies I can't see :'(

Wonder if they will ever add an ability to adjust how zoomed in it is. Combat is great, otherwise.

There's lots of different camera options but idk if that's one of them.

Not sure why it isn't on from the start, but a bit later in the game you get indicators for when an enemy is off screen behind you, when an offscreen enemy is attacking you and when an off screen projectile is coming towards you. It helps a lot.

GoW difficulty is supposed to be extremely hard anyway though.

the interior of the mountain to go spread the mom's ashes

Xev is the part your talking about before or after this?

So far this is easily the best exclusive on PS4 so far. TLOU PS3 beats it overall though and is still my GOAT!

Combat is so fudgy versatile with just the axe and shield. I don't have any other weapons so don't know if there are any. i might have gotten something spoiled on a youtube thumbnail, but not sure if it was legit.

Also I'm easily at 10 or 11 hours. I think I'll easily be 50 to 60 hours to 100% completion.

No, way past that. I'm getting close to 20 hours. That bit was amazing though.

Man I can't stop playing now. I did a fair amount of side content but the last few hours of play has been a lot of story. Hopefully I can take a break from it and go back to some slow pace exploring soon!

I've been searching every single nook and cranny. I think I only left behind 1 or 2 big chests because I couldn't find how to get them. Minus the ones that require some extra stuff.

I absolutely love juggling enemies in the air, then throwing my axe to freeze them, then pummel them with my fists and shield, then recall the axe and finish them off. I love the different special moves you can do with different stones in the axe.

I wasn't going to play anymore since i play 6 hours today, but now I'm excited to move on.

Yeah I've been getting most chests, but I haven't spent too long making sure I've found completely everything. Its hard to tell how far through the game I am, and how quickly I'm completing it compared to average.

I normally finish games in much shorter than average time, because I don't like to hang around much. This time I've been making sure I do most of the side content. I'm doing all the favours I find and exploring the hub quite a lot. Might take some time to do some treasure maps, but I don't know if I can be bothered to do those honestly ;D

Oh and if any of yall don't have hdr tvs you're missing out. Hdr in this game makes it look godlike. I mean, the trailers looked good but hdr elevates what I had seen to another level. They use light and dark so well in this game too.

Yeah I beat that guy around 7-8 hours in too I think. Or maybe a little bit earlier than that. I hadn't really done any side content before I reached that.

I actually couldn't stop after beating him and did sidecontent.

Found something that slowsslows down time when I dodge, which is awesome

I don't get all this complaining about text size. Seems normal video game size to me, nowhere near small enough to cause me any issues.

I guess if you were playing on a small monitor sized screen it might be an issue.

I haven't even reached level 2 yet.

Game is really great but so unique. It's hard getting used to not having a jump button yet still exploring. Also I still really suck at combat but I'm slowly getting the hang of things.

Yeah level 1 takes a long time to get through. It speeds up a bit further on, although I've played 20+ hours and just reached level 6. I do love the levelling system of this game. In fact I love the entire XP, loot, gear, crafting system. Its so good.

You get used to the combat more as you play, took me many hours. You keep constantly unlocking new skills and runes as you go though, so you've always got something new to get used to :P

Yeah the levels are just like botw but better.

I'd love if this became the norm. Have levels just be a description of your power vs actually being the cause of your power.

Yeah it makes perfect sense to do it this way round. And it makes it so that your stats just don't feel arbitrary, and higher levels aren't just barriers based on you not having enough stats.

Size and distance. It's smaller than most games I've played recently. Witcher 3 was similar before patches

Anyone else got the time rune?

Slow time for a last second dodge? I decided I'm too shame/ can't be arsed using it. I prefer ones that help me smash stuff in the face more with bigger explosions and stuff.

It increases elemental damage too. So if you have enchantments etc. which power up your axe with ice for example, it boosts that. Also I think heavy axe throws and heavy attacks do ice damage, so those are boosted too.

Welp, I finished the story. I was hoping there'd be a bit more but it was a great ending.

Still got loads of content to go through though!

Edit: I reckon I've played about 25 hours. I've done a fair amount of side content. I reckon it will be over 40 hours if I want to 100% though. Which I probably will, the combat in this game is just too dang fun, and I love all the stories you get to hear and the lore.

Double edit: oh yeah, this is my new favourite PS4 game. Just beats out Horizon I think. And definitely 10/10 on a 10 point scale.

Lol I finished the vast majority of games in less than average time. I just don't wait around much. I've done all of the favours in Midgard, and most in total. I've not got many of the artefacts either.

I've pretty much visited everywhere, just extra stuff on the side to do. Like the two realms you need ciphers for I barely did anything in, I thought I'd leave it to post game. There's also other optional stuff, which you guys probably haven't discovered yet either.

I don't know if I want to get all the collectibles for the plat yet, but there's at least 10 more hours of stuff I want to do, which is more substantial than just collecting things.

"It's pretty well rated, and… I think 95 actually probably puts them in the 10 highest rated games of all time, I think the highest is Ocarina of Time? GTA got a 97. 95 is pretty universally a great, great game, so there's minimal risk that anyone will buy it and be disappointed," Pacther said. "I think that the gameplay is actually easy to pick up and play, and there's a lot of little things in the game that can appeal to different niches of game players, there's action, and adventure, puzzles, and a compelling story. It appeals to everyone, and I think making it a father-son story makes it similar to The Last of Us, which, again, brings in fans of that game too. So I think it will quite clearly be the number one bestselling PS4 exclusive."Click to expand...

"I think 10 million units sounds like a low bar for it, actually," he said. "Last that Sony announced, there were 70 million PS4s out there, so 10 sounds really reasonable. I'd say realistically, it could do as many as 20 million. Now that's hard, because not everyone who has a PS4 will like an action game like God of War. But I'd say between 10 and 20 million, and I'd say 10 million is a low estimate. I think they will absolutely do 10 millionClick to expand...

Lol yeah I meant to make it a separate post but I forgot the forum combines them, good job you missed it lol.

40 hours including the majority of optional content, sure. Most people, like me, are leaving a fair amount for after the story. The final parts of the story aren't as high level/ as difficult as quite a lot of the optional content. So the side stuff is the real end game. You'll find out about all that anyway.

Yeah I was considering that but I usually enjoy smashing things to bits rather than a difficult challenge :P

Also since there's no trophy or anything to earn, it would feel like I'm just artificially making things more difficult and time consuming for myself. I might have a second playthrough on a harder difficulty though.

Super late game. I've done I think everything in the game now and that is by far the most difficult part. It doesn't help that I tried doing it without Spartan Rage for a while. Eventually I gave up, went to max my rage bar (as well as upgrading my gear a bit), then came back and it only took me a couple more tries.

Yeah same.

I thought the final fight with Baldur was the start of the end game, not the last fight in the game. I think it would have worked if they'd built up to it better. There was no indication that was the final fight of the game until after it had been finished. I was expecting more and that left me a bit disappointed. Mainly, I was expecting there to be more to Jotunheim, like maybe a couple hours journey to the top. But upon reflection I still love the ending. The ending was written really well, but its clear they're leaving a lot open for the story in terms of sequels. Oh also, have you gone back home yet? You need to do that for an extra scene.

Also where was your reaction to the blades section?? That was the best part of the story!

Plus there's still lots to do like all the Musphelheim trials, Nilfheim stuff and all the Valkyries.

I've finished everything except collectibles now pretty much. Reckon its taken me around 40 hours. If I want to 100% it'd probably be another 5 hours to go round and collect everything I missed. Not sure if I want to though because I missed something in a story place it seems you can't go back to which sucks. My last manual save is many hours before that too.

Spoiler for Hidden:
Oh I loved the blades reveal. That was so perfectly done. If that energy carried over into the ending, it would have been a true 100/100 for me.

Yeah I went back home for the tease.

Does any late game stuff have story or is it just fun gameplay?

End boss kinda sucked because I was trying to not fight him. They did a poor job setting that up imo. Killing him in the cutscene was great at least.

Yeah it was. I agree, its a shame they never managed to hit that level of perfection again. Everything was just done so well there. The ending was nice, but not on that level.

It has some lore but its mostly just fun gameplay. Not particularly a story to be told in it.

What do you mean trying not to fight him? Yeah it was a poor setup, Baldur just came out of nowhere. I think it needed maybe another hour of build up. Instead of having Baldur knock you out of the Serpent, just have you get out yourself and go to Jotunheim. Then have a bit of gameplay in Jotunheim, but realise that you opened the door for others to follow and that Baldur is chasing you. Then epic fight with him near the top. That would have been so much better.

Only problem with that is Freya, how would she get involved like she did? Maybe it would have to be done a bit differently, but that's the kind of build up I'd have gone for.

I was thinking of doing another full playthrough to get all the collectibles, but then I remembered how the game works. A lot of the stuff you come across is locked until later, so that wouldn't really work. I'll probably just go back to each area and get all the stuff I missed.

Then if I want the plat I'm probably going to have to playthrough part of the game again, since I missed a rage horn piece in an area it seems you can't go back to.

Oh man am I hyped for the next game. This one has the best combat I've probably ever experienced and does such an incredible job setting the stage. Also this game felt a lot like GOW 2.

The blades felt odd at first for me since I was so used to a higher camera angle with them, but man did they start making sense with lots of enemies. Also was cool how it introduced elemental combat where you wanted fire or ice depending on the enemy.

I hope the next game delves more into Athena and what the situation is with Greece. Also I wonder what the travelers are. They felt like they were knights or something from a far off land (unless that was explained somewhere).

Ragnarok will be crazy. They did such a wonderful job setting up the lore for Ragnarok so that once it starts you really understand the gravity of the situation. That giant lava Giant is going to be awesome and I bet Kratos will once again screw things up and stop Ragnarok from happening the way it is supposed to.

I wonder how the kid will work in the next game. He's grown into his own and being just the sidekick might not fit his character. Was so glad he never replaced Kratos in this one.

The architecture is prevalent when people show off anything in the mythology. Only Hercules the Legendary Journey didn't, and I'm sure it was to save money by reusing the same medieval set.

It's amazing they made such a critically praised game while saving so much of the norse mythology for a part 2 or 3.

And yeah all the previous god of war games were good. Just because this took it to a new level can't discredit the old ones. God of war 1, 2, 3 and ghost of sparta were all masterpieces for their time. Ascension and chains were decent bit of fun too.

All valkyries dead. They were all easy post game but Holy shame the Queen was hard. Took me two hours but its done now. Just 2 artifacts and 8 ravens left for the platinum. God of war ascension will be the only gow in the series I've not platinumed. I'll have to at least try it for the clean sweep.

Platinumed GOW today. Finding the ravens is a pain because I only needed like 15 but had to follow a guide from the start because you don't know which ones you need. They really should have made it possible to buy a treasure map post game revealing where they are. Because what's the point in making the player use a YouTube guide.

Maybe as a reward for finding the 12 hidden treasures give a map for the ravens.

On the map you can see the items per region. That helped me a lot with finding my missing artifacts.

Just finished the story! Such a good ending! Now for finishing all the last content for the platinum.

Spoiler for Hidden:
Like the red lightning crystals, but blue. I noticed them around but there was a specific chest I was going for on a lake island that looked like it'd use them. Guess I just missed the 3rd letter pot.

I got full health and full rage. Pretty much collected everything.

Now that I can safely read this.

If you enjoy the game and just play everything it has to offer, then you'd only miss the trophies for collecting things.

No trophies require a second playthrough.

One end game boss is really really hard but if you've done the rest of the game, you should be able to manage.

Is the new God of War Awards-Bait? | ResetEra (https://www.resetera.com/threads/is-the-new-god-of-war-awards-bait.39453/)

Quote
With all the recent praise going towards the recent God of War, talk has been buzzing about how it'll sweep game of the year awards and the VGA's. My question is simple; has gaming reached a point where we have our own "Awards-bait" sub-genre a la Oscar-bait films? Obviously the criteria they are seeking to meet are different, but I have heard many people claim that games like Horizon, BOTW, and now God War are not only critic-friendly but actively trying to copy the formulas of other successful games in terms of both gameplay and story to get high review scores. Personally, I find it plausible, if a bit nebulous to define. Do you think God of War is Awards-Bait? Is that even a thing within video games? Are there other examples that you feel are more bait than others? Personally, even though I still really really like it, I feel like Bioshock: Infinite was actively trying to garner critical appeal with its marketing and design.

It makes some sense with walking simulators and indies just since those are niche and cheaper to make. Doubt many/any are made with that intention but at least it could be possible.

Big AAA games that sell millions though, that just doesn't make any sense.

Also it's amusing that GOW has brought about a lot of discussion about cinematic story focused games even though by far the best thing about it is the combat. I don't think many people dismissing it realise how gamey GOW is.

It's a different game compared to Horizon and MGSV so I wouldn't feel comfortable ranking it above or below them.

Different kind of thing really. I'd say easier, but there's a couple of trials that are quite tricky to master. Not because of combat difficulty, but because of the criteria/ conditions.

Yeah that's probably the thing that annoyed me the most in the game. Not being able to just run past enemies/ not being able to interact with stuff after. There's probably reasons for designing it that way, but I'd prefer if it wasn't like that.

Niflheim imo shows that it was smart. Stops you from losing interest and just caring about the destination.

Yes but I like it and think Niflheim explains why it's good game design for other areas too.

Yeah this is true. I just think it should be default that you can interact still, but then disable it for certain areas like Niflheim. This is such a tiny criticism though, I think this feature annoyed me only two or three times while I was playing.

the only time it annoyed me was right then, especially since it was behind 2 doors locked with that wind stuff lol

i officially only have the artifacts and birds left. and only 3 artifacts at that lol 19 birds. shouldnt take to long i hope

Is that Alfheim? Thought it was a comment on the puzzle.

Speaking of that, they did a great job hiding the boy teleporting. Outside of a few times, it never felt like he teleported.

And this is by far the best combart partner system. Way ahead of bioshock Infinite and TLOU. Boy not only helped but made it feel like a tag team.

The unlockable bonus for rapid firing was legit. The devs understood me!

Lol same. I was always spamming those arrows as much as I could, they're so OP. I love that there was some good puzzles involving Atreus/ his arrows as well.

Just so well designed.

So I've been doing sidequests and there's always a new one after I finish another.

Saw that there's a trophy for getting ancient armor set but for some reason I don't have enough ingredients yet despite having finished the game and probably most of the side quests

That spoiler thread on Era is really going nuts. Making me anxious for the next game.

Someone suggested Kratos is Týr and that blew my mind. Definitely possible. I really hope they finish this story appropriately.

Another pointed out the pop-up when Jörmungandr spit out the axe, "Eitr imbued", is actually alluding to the thing that will kill Thor at Ragnarök

This video spools all the past games but the overall thought is definitely something I've been feeling as well.

It's incredibly frustrating how so many people throw the older games under the bus. They received universal acclaim when they released and people still love them.

Wouldn't say this was caused by the new game though. I remember when the rumours started there were just so many people not wanting Kratos in it.

Cory Barlog addresses the lack of boss fights in GOW | ResetEra (https://www.resetera.com/threads/cory-barlog-addresses-the-lack-of-boss-fights-in-gow.45951/)

Quote
I think this is a very interesting interview. There were a lot of bosses cut during the development. More at the link (very mild spoilers)https://gamingbolt.com/god-of-war-director-address-the-so-called-lack-of-boss-fights
Quote
According to game director Cory Barlog, that is because a lot of boss fights had to be cut during the game's development, owing to time constraints. "You know, there are several bosses that I had to cut throughout the game simply because we got about 15 to 20 people on each boss, and those bosses go anywhere from a year to two each," Barlog said in an exclusive interview with GamingBolt. "Which I think is something a lot of people underestimate, "there's not enough bosses in this game!" You're kind of being greedy, because while I'd love like ten more bosses in there, this game would have taken like 20 years to make," Cory said to GamingBolt.Click to expand...
Quote
Barlog also notes that to some degree, the intent always was to make a leaner game than what God of War 2 and especially God of War 3 had been. "All the stuff I was approaching, the way I was telling it, the way I explained it to people in the beginning was, "look, this is how we'll do it. Simple story, complex characters. And we'll figure everything out from there. Focus on this father and son journey, a coming of age for both of these characters, while they're on the road. That's it. Everything else, we'll come up with as we go," he said. "We didn't start by plotting "this is so-and-so, he wants to kill so-and-so, and he wants this". Those characters came from the interactions in the story, and what they would offer, and the concept of limiting the number--something that I think we were criticized a little bit about, too. There's not a lot of characters. There's not a lot of bosses. And that's intentional, 100%. You look at the first God of War game, not a lot of bosses. Not a lot of characters. And I think that's good. I thought of God of War 3, I love it, but it's like a swan song for Greek mythology, so there's a lot of characters, which we spent two games building up relationships for. Now, we're introducing Kratos to a new world, and like a fish going into a tank, he needs to adjust. We need to leave the bag in the water for a little while before we release him in so he can go free."Click to expand...
