After 4 years of development, here's everything about Cube Royale that hasn't changed

  • You still play as a cube.

That semi serious list aside, it's crazy how much the game has change since its original prototype. Here's the earliest screenshot of it I could find, taken January 30, 2014:

Game was fully playable and even had online multiplayer. My initial holiday 2014 release goal wasn't that crazy. Only had to finish porting it to PS4 and make the UI and I'd be done. Plans changed so instead I ended up rebuilding Cube Royale from the ground up, twice.

On the programing side of things, this version was a mess. Framerate could drop from 60fps to 15fps with a single explosion. I'd joke that it was a framerate grenade. I'd even lie to myself and think that could be a game mechanic. The cubes would rotate as the player looked around, so every frame I had to push them back to the correct orientation. Physically they were capsules and the corners of cubes could clip into objects. TBH there's not much more to complain about, since this version was so bare bones. It only had 21 scripts and almost all of them should have been condensed to a single file. The current Cube Royale is just so freaking polished by comparison, and it still has some way to go.

On the gameplay side of things, you're still a cube where shots give a defense buff until fired. The core concept hasn't changed, just its interpretation. Back then I marketed the game as a first person shooter but that's not what it feels like today. Cube Royale is much more of a fighting game with projectiles. Even on a completely empty map that's void of interesting geometry, it's still fun to fight another player. The "cube" mechanics are the primary point of the game and I've focused in on them. New mechanics were added to make fights better and more interesting, while other mechanics have been toned back/removed. Green and red surfaces do not have any gameplay affects anymore. "Formations" are gone too, although I hardly talked about them. I'm really excited to share some gameplay specifics soon.

On the graphics side of things, VizionEck feels like a sequel. The player cube is the only thing I haven't changed visually. Here's a higher resolution version of the screenshot that was leaked last week:

I'm excited.

That tiny screenshot where you can barely see anything looks impeccable.

OK maybe I will use colored surfaces for gameplay, but just in a different way.

Will there be a demo?
Probably not since there's no campaign. Will have a beta instead hopefully.
