Yay! Finally! What a year this was. So many games deserve to be GOTY but there can only be one I suppose. I'm doing reverse order for more suspense.

Honourable mentions:
GT Sport
Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle

10. Crash Bandicoot N-Sane Trilogy - this is an excellent remaster of two amazing games, and one good game. It was fun and challenging and still great to play in 2017. I rated this 8.5/10

9. Golf Story - I was looking for some fun Switch games when I saw this recommended by some people. Its fantastic, a short RPG with a great story and interesting gameplay. Really fun little indie exclusive. 8.6/10

8. F1 2017 - I'm a huge fan of f1 games, so this was always going to be up there. But this game is a very big improvement over last year in many areas, and I had a lot of fun with it. 8.8/10

7. Assassin's Creed Origins - I can't believe this is only #7. I loved this game when I was playing it. The world is incredible and the gameplay is fantastic and fresh. Side quests are by far the best ever for AC too. It was let down by a rushed/ weird story and repetitive feel after a while. 9.1/10

6. Uncharted The Lost Legacy - Possibly the most fun 6 hours I've ever had in gaming. The pacing was great, set pieces and action incredible and the story and characters excellent. If it was a full game/ kept that up for longer it would score even higher. 9.2/10

5. Divinity Orignal Sin 2 - One of the best RPGs I've ever played (and I haven't quite finished it yet). The creativity is fantastic, even if the main story is quite boring and uneventful. Gameplay is slow but very in depth and rewarding. Co-op is the reason I rate this so highly, I'm having a blast playing with a friend. 9.3/10

4. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe - I consider this the best Mario Kart game since DS. It has the highest number and best quality of tracks and fantastic new gameplay features. I'm happy putting this remaster up here too because of the nice Switch exclusive features like double items. 9.4/10

3. Super Mario Odyssey - this game is pure joy in video game form. The gameplay is really inventive and always fresh. Its full of surprises and constantly makes you smile. The amount of content is great too, its just a shame it has a horrible post-post game ending level and can get a bit repetitive with some moons. 9.6/10

2. Horizon Zero Dawn - I was convinced this would be my game of the year. I absolutely love it. The machines and gameplay involving them is incredible. The story is fantastic (probably my favourite video game story ever). The world is beautiful. Aloy is amazing. Its probably my favourite (new) PS4 game and it can't do much to improve in my eyes. 9.8/10

1. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild - I wasn't sure if this would be my kind of game, since its story light and all about exploration. I was tentative going into it. But oh my lord did it exceed my expectations. This game blew me away right from the start and 90 hours of playtime later it still does. The creativity in gameplay is amazing, the story is fantastic and exploration of the world is just something else. Its the only game I've played where I've enjoyed just wondering around off the beaten track, messing around and discovering things to do. Most of the problems other people have with the game I don't care about or I think they're positives. Its pretty much video game perfection, in my opinion. 10.0/10

Horizon: Zero Dawn
Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy
Knack II
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (does this count if I've played MK8, if not on Switch?)
Crash, Mario Kart 8(technically didn't play, but also technically did.. :P ) are the same solid games we've come to expect. Crash especially looks amazing on the PS4. It doesn't look like a remastered PS1 game, it looks like it'd easily fit alongside PS4 games like Knack.

Knack II is like Knack, but better. That's why it deserves To (https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/b/b5/Seven-segment_2.svg) BE (https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/4/48/B_cursiva.gif) GOAT (https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/b/b2/Hausziege_04.jpg/1200px-Hausziege_04.jpg).

Horizon is also amazing. It's a very fast moving and fluid RPG, I would say it doesn't really have competition in that respect. I kind of wish it was a little better. Fighting doesn't feel as solid to me, as say Bloodborne. That's my only real complaint about the game. The world is amazing to explore. The gameplay is otherwise amazing. I think there's a lot here to expand on.

I've been playing Nier and trying to get that finished ::)

The only games I've played from 2017:
Nier Automata
Mass Effect Andromeda
Horizon Zero Dawn
Zelda Breath of the Wild
For Honor
Destiny 2

Really wish I had more time so I could play Rime too ::)

1: Horizon Zero Dawn
2: Legend of Zelda
3: Nier Automata
4:
5:
6: Mass Effect Andromeda
7:
8: *Everything
9: For Honor
10: Destiny 2

I have some empties in my list but I didn't want to rank things higher. Explanations in reverse order.

Destiny 2 was fun. I beat the campaign and that was that, but I enjoyed it.

For Honor was fun. I beat the campaign and played some multiplayer matches. MP isn't really my thing but I really like what they were going for.

Everything is a game I didn't play, but it had a really good 10 minute trailer. I'm voting for it just based off the quality of that alone.

Mass Effect Andromeda was really really good and I loved it up till the very end. The problem though was that the ending was extremely underwhelming and made everything else feel pointless. I did essentially 100% of the side content because I felt invested and wanted to have the best ending possible but it turns out
Spoiler for minor:
there is only one ending and in that ending only one side character can die. Mass Effect 3 had a better ending even! At least that had late game content dependent on your actions.

This wouldn't have been too bad if a sequel was coming soon that could import the save file, but that seems very unlikely. It's as if this game was just the opening act of a story that they wanted to cut into a trilogy.

Nier Automata is really good and I like almost everything about it. I was very impressed with how they used cheap development things to make a AAA like game. Also the characters were really good and it was just a fun world. Went in completely blind so it was also fun trying to figure out what the heck happened. The open world was the average bland boring open world that is being shoved into modern games but somehow it worked pretty well here. I think it's because there weren't any collectables or such scattered around. Kinda more like a last gen map vs the modern "arena" like approach. Anyway the only significant negative would be the multiple endings.
Spoiler for minor:
It's a really cool concept to have you have to play the game multiple times but I feel they could have done that a bit better. Also made it hard to know when to stop playing. Very rarely do I 100% video games so it was a bit awkward trying to decide when to stop playing. Afterwards I looked online and I saw more or less all the major things but without getting spoiled, there was no way to know if the game was done or not.

Zelda was an amazing game. I love so much about it and even though the puzzles absolutely suck at being puzzles, the shrines weren't too bad and some were interesting. Probably the greatest strength of the game is that it doesn't implode halfway through. It's fun to explore the world at the very beginning and at the very end. You don't start out with wonder only to be reigned in by mechanic limitations. However, that only applies to exploration. Quests were the opposite and lots were disappointing. I especially hated the ending to the house quest. That was so disappointing that I put the game down and didn't touch it for 8 months.

It's a game that I think is incredibly overrated. It's also a game that defies logic and simultaneously deserves all its praise. Very close to my goty.

Horizon Zero Dawn is a masterpiece. I loved it from start to finish, even though it wasn't perfect.
Spoiler for minor:
Why did everyone die as soon as you found them? Going off memory, I think 4 seperate people died this way and it was kinda stupid. Also the end boss fight wasn't unique. It wasn't bad but it felt like they originally planned for something else. I also would have liked more control over the story. It's a linear game and that's great but the dialogue options should have had more of a lasting impact on relationships. Like I really wanted to get close to the king ::)

The lore was wonderful and I can't think of a game that did it better. Every twist and turn was almost perfectly executed. You kept trying to figure out explanations and the real ones always exceeded your predictions. Plus the game was in Colorado and it was really fun having it feel real.

I thought the open world in Nier was absolute poop. I hated doing anything in that game because the open world was bland and boring. Not to mention the map for it was just hot garbage and really difficult to use.

What did you dislike so much about the house quest ending? :o

Pretty much fully agree on Horizon.

The open world wasn't good, but it didn't actively annoy me. Rise of the Tomb Raider's open world was much worse imo. I liked the Nier map! It was pretty useless but more or less felt like it worked with the game.

Zelda
Spoiler for Hidden:
I built a freakin town and all I got was some lame rewards! Once built, the town acts like any other town in the game. Instead it should have emphasized that you were an integral part in its creation. Give you another house, give you an admin role, make the villagers know who you are, or really just anything to make the town special.

The sister of the main dude, the side quest with you finding the lover of the girl on the island, the other guy from the hunting lodge that was fighting the trex robot, and I think a couple more.

I thought the quest itself was great and building a town from scratch just felt so awesome and unique I didn't really care about any material reward. I don't think link would want to have an admin role anyway. Yeah, maybe it would be nice if all the villagers knew you helped build the town but I don't really care about that.

That's the worst game I played in 2017.

I was on the fence about Nioh but decided not to get it. I'm still not sure if I want it.
