Some scattered showers won't hurt as long as the wind is nice. Monday looks good for that.

Will be awesome once SpaceX rockets become more mainstream and durable to weather. Soyuz has launched during snow.

T minus 48 hours

It's been a long few months since the last launch. Lucky for us though, the next launch is scheduled for Jan 26. 2017 could have a launch almost every other week if another explosion doesn't happen.

2 hours to go. Seems like it might really be launching today.

Hosted stream is near starting.

Fuling is already well underway. They're doing fuling at like half speed to err on the side of caution. We are go for launch!

thats pretty sweet.   Amazing they are able to launch again so fast if they do in 10 days, but i guess they should have a stock pile of cores since they didnt really need to make any tweaks to hardware, just procedures.

So i guess that means the new launch site is ready, thatll make it even more exciting

Launch order is Echostar, ISS resupply, and then SES 10. February hopefully.

Heavy could be in April. That's not too bad.

Dragon 2 should also be this year.

Echostar has been pushed back behind CRS 10, since CRS has a tighter launch schedule.

CRS10 is still net Feb 15. The hanger for 39A is larger and can support multiple Falcons simultaneously, so it allows them to be more flexible with launch order.

Plus rain is expected this weekend so CRS might be delayed to monday. If they can do an 8 day turnaround, that'd be amazing.

The new strongback drops back 90 degrees at launch so it should need much less refurbishment than the others.

Plus isnt the pad also fit for Falcon heavy launches?   gotta imagine that if the pad is built for 27 engines blasting, 9 engines probably wont cause as much flame/heat damage  lol

No. Either they were testing it to the breaking point, or it had some problem that needs fixing.

Can't imagine they didn't expect this in some form.

Next launch is on the 28th if you're interested. Won't be attempting a landing though. The booster would have poor chances of success and even if it did land, it'd take a lot of damage from reentry. Plus SpaceX is working on the Falcon 9 Block 5 which is optimized for cheap reuse so most of the currently landed rockets won't be used that much anyway.

In the future with a heavy launch like this, they'd use the Falcon Heavy. It uses three boosters instead of one, but that means there's plenty of excess fuel and two can fly back to Florida like today. Third booster lands on the drone ship with minimal heat damage as well.

Just a heavier satelite

the extra weight effects the second stage the most, so they want the first stage to get going higher and faster to make up for it

Yeah that makes sense.

I wish we'd spent more time on rockets in classical mechanics :(

It's a joke but it's seriously true. Games are the best teachers out there.

Eh I know a lot of orbital mechanics tbh. I haven't played kerbal that much but I can't see it being too complicated

The amount i learned from playing kerbals is astounding.  If ksp was around when i was in high school, or if i was in high school now, i would surely try to go into engineering in the space industry.

i know the clouds look great, passes through just a portion of them, i hope we get some nice closeups.

i also love the way the tallback for this pad does the quick pull back, as opposed to the slow one at vandenberg and the old florida pad.

Also that video is pretty ridiculous

Well I guess I know more about the theory and the equations behind orbital mechanics but KSP helps you understand the practicalities better

yup, ksp will teach you how to apply it in practice.  I dont know any of the equation stuff, but i know what will happen when you apply thrust in given directions and how itll effect your orbit.   flying by the seat of your pants with help from computers lol

I thought it would have moved back quicker and farther. This is still better than the old way but I imagined it'd go full horizontal.

KSP is a very cool game. I feel like I'd love it if I played it.

I could work out what the trajectory change would be given a certain thrust but it would probably take me a long time. We did it before in a tutorial but I've forgotten how you do it now.

I should revise  ;D

i turned away after MECO and the second stage igniting successfully.   but i think for this trajectory yes, itll have reached a somewhat stable orbit, even tho itll be technically loosing altitude until its Pe, but the next burn will send it up to GTO anyways before it gets there

I'm worried about the ITS.

Red Dragon was delayed 2 years, Grey Dragon is happening, pressure tank exploded, and 2nd stage reuse is back to being a priority. Some of these are super cool but they show less focus is being put on Mars. Could it be that the tank exploding has set them back and everything is being revalued? It's possible the ITS was too advanced to be built.

Maybe second stage recovery will work like a mini ITS. Have a heatshield on the side and have a triangular setup of superdracos on the side. They might want to test more ITS concepts before investing in a full version.

We should know in a month or two since an ITS update is coming on their website. Hopefully it isn't scaled back or delayed. Also hope it keeps the iconic window.

List of artificial objects on Mars - Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_artificial_objects_on_Mars)

9,880 kg on Mars today, while each red dragon is about 6,000 kg.

MIght only be 24 hours for preparing the booster, not 24 hours for everything.

DOing mounting and a normal launch in 24 hours would be impressive even on a new rocket.

Seems the mini ITS will still be a super huge rocket. These are calculations based off hints/leaks.

And 100 tons of payload to the surface of Mars with refueling in orbit.

This mini ITS is designed for commercial payloads and pioneering the technology needed for the full sized version.

those are some pretty nice numbers.  more to LEO than the saturn V and reusable.  6x what the falcon 9 can do. this would really open up the commercial space industry and make large missions much more feasible.   itll be interesting to hear the launch costs, and really makes one question if tis even worth it for nasa to keep developing larger rockets.   they could put the funds towards what to do once in space.

Yeah this feels like a Falcon Heavy+SLS replacement. Second stage will be fully reusable so it should be cheaper than FH even for lighter loads.

On one hand it sucks they can't secure funding to jump directly into the full sized version, but on the other hand this'll still be an extremely useful rocket. Could take the first humans to Mars still.

Yea, ITS was on the colonization level,   the mini should be able to do early exploring and pathfinder missions.

I really want to see in orbit refueling and soon.  this all opens up possibilities of missions weve previously dreamed of much sooner than the full ITS

That's assuming mini ITS doesn't take the same 10 years as full ITS was targeting.

At least with this they'll be able to make money along the way, similar to how propulsive landing was developed.

AMA about BFR. Cool info coming out.

Seems they'll build a BFS without a heat shield first. Launch that on Earth like the grasshopper and do tests. Then use it as a SSTO and to full orbit landings without payload.

Maybe. Could be related to some recovery test.

Falcon Heavy might not slip too much. They could move ZUMA over to the other pad now.

but wouldnt that push back crs13?   and i thought zzuma was on a tight schedule so i doubt they would postpone it simply for a recovery test.

No I mean they realised some change they made for fairing recovery could cause a problem. Would have to remove/change that before launch.

CRS13 doesn't need fairings.

that would make more sense,

but if they move it to the other pad wouldnt it push crs13 back a week or 2 to reset the range?

So looking forward to this launch. If these delays suck, just wait till Falcon Heavy is on the pad.

Does boca chica have any construction yet or are they still dirt compacting?

Yeah no technical reason. This flight was even going to be a rtls at first.

Maybe they just have too many Block 3/4s and they want to use the extra performance to speed up sat deployment. Wish they could recover it and put it in a museum!

do we know if the core has flown before?  maybe its been used one and they dont expect to get a third out of it? lol

maybe they will surprise everyone, use the extra boost from the first stage so the second has more gas at the end to try and recover the second

Yes it's reused.

Some talk is that maybe the barge couldn't be used. The Florida barge had a fire so the thinking is that maybe SpaceX took some custom parts off the California one and shipped them west to speed up the refurbishment. Florida has a new Block 4 coming up so it's financially smarter to recover that vs recover this if SpaceX could only pick one.

New plans for Boca Chica.

Is being built as a McGregor 2.0 for BFR. That way the rocket can arrive by barge.

First rocket tests should be late this year/early 2019. The launch pad itself will take longer to finish.

Reminds me of how Blue Origin is combining their test and launch sites.
Title: Re: SpaceX and rockets general thread
Post by: Legend on Jan 22, 2018, 10:26 PM
Blue Origin according to this (http://www.orlandosentinel.com/news/space/os-cfb-spacex-blue-origin-florida-20180122-story.html) article is only going to have about 300 people employed at their Florida facility for the next few years. Combined with some other comments Blue Origin have made about their first customer flights being ~2022 (and a reddit post figuring this all out), it seems that Blue Origin is going to build a New Glenn prototype and test it similar to their New Sheppard before commiting to a full production line for the vehicle.

So the New Glenn prototype might fly ~2020 but for are intents and purposes the rocket won't be fully ready until ~2022 or so. Means Falcon Heavy could have a few extra years without a competitor and it means New Glenn will have very little time until it's competing with BFR.

Makes me wonder if the three staged version of New Glenn might be scrapped while they instead work on a fully reusable system.

BFR really is happening!  ;D Proof that their original ITS roadmap is more or less unchanged for BFR. Also farther fuels the speculation that BFR, Vulcan, New Glenn, and SLS could all be neck and neck with their first launches.

i really wonder if they will be allowed full orbital BFR launches from boca chica beach,  or if theyll have to build an offshore platform.   its also had a bunch of activity and things look like they are about to really get going

Nasa is asking for companies to submit lunar lander proposals. Wants to deliver cargo around 2022.

Goal is 500kg to the surface. Would be funny if SpaceX sent a proposal using BFR since it could do 50,000 kg to the surface and bring samples back.

Blue Origin switches engines for New Glenn second stage - SpaceNews.com (http://spacenews.com/blue-origin-switches-engines-for-new-glenn-second-stage/)

New Glenn slightly downgraded in order to keep development from slipping farther (and probably make it cheaper).

First launch is set for Q4 2020. The engine switch also means it'll get even taller since hydrogen is less dense. Gonna be huge!

BFR was possibly elongated back to the original ITS height of 122 meters, or maybe this animation was poorly updated with the new design. There was some speculation that it had gotten taller so this might be real.

Also seems their earth to earth plans are legit and are being actively worked on.

Lots of cool info out of yesterday.

Hope to do a 24 hour relaunch demo next year. Launch, land, pop on a new second stage+payload, launch again.

This year should have boosters get to 3-4 reuses. Next year boosters should be hitting 10 reuses.

Boca Chica is now exclusively for BFR. No Falcon launches from there.

Working on Falcon second stage recovery. Will be adding heat shields and such for testing. Still hopeful the marginal cost could get to around $6 million for F9 launches.

Around 300 future F9 launches are expected before BFR has fully taken over. Plan to build 30-50 block 5s.

Block 5 is essentially the 6th iteration of the F9.

Elon Musk is annoying me more and more. I'm starting to wonder if there's anything genuine about him. The Tesla working conditions sound horrific, but he doesn't care. All he wants is production and money. The 'mini submarine' was never going to work and he never tried to make it work, it was just a publicity stunt. And now apparently he's donating to republicans to help keep them in control of the house, despite calling himself a socialist.

I'm definitely a fan of Elon Musk's accomplishments and his companies but yeah my opinion on him as a person is much more grey. I'm still not sure which parts of his journalist rating concept were real and which were satire. Deciding by popularity was a horrible and dangerous idea.

I don't know that much about Tesla and it does sound like they really do have bad working conditions, but it's hard to find the truth since so many people hate Elon Musk/the companies. SpaceX gets yelled at for having bad working conditions too yet in that case the stories have mostly been proven false.

The mini submarine was definitely not just a publicity stunt though. That'd make no sense. Instead it was probably Elon Musk genuinely wanting to help save the kids and wanting credit for helping to save the kids. That'd match how Robert Zubrin described Elon in an interview I listened to a few months back.

Yes but according to some of the people there Elon didn't communicate through any of the proper channels to try and help. He only did it through social media or more publicly, and according to one of the diving experts there his submarine idea was never ever going to work. Just seems like a publicity stunt to me.

I didn't like how "PRy" it seemed at first but actually making it proves otherwise imo. Building the sub would have cost a lot of money and would just not be worth the low amount of publicity. It's not like this is a company that needs all the attention it can get. It's really only useful from a PR point if the sub is used and included in every single broadcast about the event.

What's the European solar probe? Google is confusing it with the parker solar probe.
Parker Solar Probe: Nasa delays mission to unlock Sun's mysteries - BBC News (https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-45058911)

What is Europe doing?

The European Space Agency has its own version of Parker.

Solar Orbiter, or SolO as it's sometimes known, is undergoing final assembly and testing in the UK. It is expected to launch in 2020, arriving at its closest position to the Sun towards the end of Parker's planned seven years of operations.

SolO will go to within 42 million km of the Sun's surface. That's further away than Parker but it will still need an impressive shield.

Being at a more distant position, though, means SolO can do things Parker cannot - like look directly at the Sun. This enables the pair to do complementary science.

Well it actually is kinda easy to reach the sun, since Mercury and Venus have short orbits and can be continuously used for slingshots  ;)

Orion's third flight will haul two pieces of a space station to lunar orbit | The Planetary Society (http://www.planetary.org/blogs/jason-davis/orion-em-3-gateway.html)

So first flight is Block 1 and sends uncrewed Orion around the Moon.

Second flight is Block 1 again and sends crewed Orion around the Moon.

Third flight is Block 1 for Europa Clipper.

Fourth flight is Block 1B and sends crewed Orion to orbit the Moon and deliver LOP-G parts.

Will be really interesting to see if we ever get to Block 1B.

About time that rocket has another launch!

Really high quality look at how a martian outpost could start. Some elements of the plan don't seem realistic and others would need to be re-designed based off the launcher and lander, but I kinda fell in love with the general concept. 3D print a "dumb" shell and then inflate habitats inside it with room to spare. Looking at this concept from the BFR perspective, the first rocket would be focused on setting up nuclear power, the rock shell, and water mining for methane production. Second BFR could bring the habitats and replacement parts.

It awesome that we will eventually have what will hopefully be super amazing satellite internet, but at the same time hopefully the sats don't saturate the night sky too much and ruin the natural sky.

I'm actually kinda looking forward to it. In my backyard I have pretty low light pollution and in the mountains I can get essentially zero light pollution and seeing satellites has always been a fun part of stargazing for me. They're only visible for a few hours after the sun sets unless you are really far north. I was actually kinda sad to read the Musk tweet about them looking into decreasing the brightness lol.

The only worry I have is for radio astronomy. That's impacted regardless of the time of day.

I think OneWeb has a small chance but Starlink has such an advantage right now. Either it needs to have a massive set back or another company needs to be artificially propped up.

Yet I think we are living in an amazing time.
By the way, I also read that the Russian Sphere project also wants to launch a global satellite Internet system.
But, if someone enters the market with their 6g networks before these 3 operators are fully deployed, then all these operators will not be needed.
But in any case, many projects will need launch vehicles to launch satellites. Probably the development of this market leads to the emergence of more and more space companies around the world.

The network has information about an extremely unusual find of a Chinese lunar rover. As it turned out, he managed to find a very strange monolith on the surface of a natural satellite of the Earth. Scientists already have several versions about the origins of its appearance.
So, according to one version, a piece of stone appeared on the surface quite recently as a result of a rock split from a meteorite impact, writes Space.com. To call youth the reason for its appearance is an extremely logical move. After all, if the monolith were older, it would have long ago been sharpened as a result of many different processes taking place on the surface of the Moon.
To test the basic theory, scientists intend to bring the lunar rover close and use the VNIS spectrometer. With its help, experts will be able to determine the composition of the material. And if the researchers find out that the breed came to the satellite from the outside, then they will have a new goal - to look around the area and try to understand where it came from.

Guys, I want to talk about the SN11 test. What do you think, will it also explode, or SpaceX has already managed to detect all existing problems, and we'll see a perfect landing of the prototype? What's the chance that it will happen? I had been watching tests since their beginning and can state that engineers are steadily progressing. I hope SN11 will achieve its aim, and we'll remember this day for a long time.

One unexpected fun fact.

Solid rockets burn from the inside out, not the bottom to the top. Longer solid rockets produce more thrust but burn for the same amount of time.

Also, solid rockets can change their thrust over time. It all depends on the shape of the inner cavity, but the thrust curve is of course locked in place once manufactured.

Imo they get a lot of unjustified hate. They can't abort which is risky with humans but for cargo they make a lot of sense.

so tell me about space elevators.
You just use a very strong cable to connect a ground station to a satellite. Then you can ride up and down the cable like an elevator without needing a rocket.

The satellite needs to be in a special orbit to make the physics actually work, but that's the general concept. No current way to build a cable strong enough to build a space elevator though. Also fully reusable rockets are likely cheaper anyway.

does it need to be constructed at the equator?  how is this wire get spanned between earth/space.  how long to ascend?  how much weight per assent.  is this really just down to a materials science problem?

It doesn't technically need to be at the equator but it'd be much much simpler and more realistic to build one there. Otherwise you could build a pair of base stations in the north and south that both connect to the space counterweight, or just a single northern base station that has very dynamic loads as the counterweight oscillates north and south.

There's no known way to currently build one since we don't have the materials to build them. You could just launch a rocket straight up with a wire attached if the material is light enough to allow that. Ascension time and weight also just depend on engineering.

Very few people take space elevators on Earth seriously because they could easily be hundreds of years away from being possible. On different planets or moons they're a lot more realistic but we don't have a reason to build them yet.

If you're interested in space elevators, you might also be interested in spinlaunch. They're working to throw stuff to space.

I really expected Victor Glover to be on Artemis 3. Artemis 2 only loops around the Moon while Artemis 3 lands, so it's the more prestigious mission. Still pretty dang awesome to be on the first crewed flight of orion.

Christina Koch has the record of longest spaceflight by a woman and Reid Wiseman got to chose his flight, so it's kinda surprising both neither is on Artemis 3. I don't know anything about the Canadian but this will be their only Artemis seat for a while. NASA seems to be picking one international space agency per mission to donate a seat to. ESA is expected to have a non landing seat on Artemis 3.

Will be pretty funny if Dear Moon flies before this. I do not expect that to happen, but delays are often chaotically unpredictable. Just imagine Youtubers and DJs flying around the Moon while NASA astronauts are stuck waiting on the ground.
