It was originally a village called Priest's Tun (which means Priest's farm or estate) before growing into a town in the 12th century. Eventually the name changed to modern day Preston, mainly due to laziness with English language. Preston was made the 50th city in England 2002, after beating 25 other towns and winning the competition to mark the Queen's golden jubilee.
