well i've never actually used it :P
I've used the chat embedded in gmail since forever ago, and hangouts is just an extension of that... also you don't have to have a gmail account to join g+ which is nice as I set up one for with my work email so that I can back up photos easily to the cloud from my iphone

Fair enough!

One thing to praise the embedded gmail chat is that it is always there and it seems to for whatever reason link to other accounts as well (AIM being the primary example). Either's fine with me.
