According to this report, the Microsoft layoffs incoming could top the 2009 layoffs which were nearly 6,000 and the Xbox division could very well be affected. Microsoft's UK marketing team is almost certainly going to be hit.

Wow that's not good to hear.

Hopefully it's just incorrect information.

More unemployment in the UK. Woohoo! :(

The new CEO said it will happen last week.... the lay off are true... mostly will be in the Nokia Division because after the fusion they have so many employees doing the same roles.

At least nobody part of the dev team in MS Studios will be fired... no game development compromises for now.

I think it's important to note that actual Xbox game development likely won't be affected but things like marketing and R&D are very possible.

Others sources says 12k lay offs.

They had to merge 20-30k from Nokia... so this huge number makes sense.

It honestly disgusts me when a company profiting 20 billion dollars annually lays off employees just so they can get to 20.1 billion dollars in profits.

Dr. Pezus

Well the Xbox European marketing team is basically useless so why not let them go.

Unemployed people hurt the economy.

They will find other jobs. Shouldn't be too hard. It's likely that they are very qualified if they were working for MS.

Xevross

Yes they should be fine and find new jobs easily. There's plenty of jobs to go around in the UK, the only reason unemployment is so high is because of our stupid benefit system. People with large families are better off not working, which really isn't right.

You never know :/

It is real and HUGE!

18k lay offs, 12.5k from Nokia.

Microsoft is announcing its biggest ever job cuts today, affecting 18,000 employees. In a memo, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella says the company will cut 18,000 positions in the next year, with former Nokia employees expected to account for around 12,500 jobs.

The cuts follow a recent memo from Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, outlining a big shakeup for the software maker and plans to reshape the core of what Microsoft is. Nadella also dropped the devices and services moniker, opting for a focus on cloud and mobile for the future of Microsoft. In an interview with The Verge, Nadella talked about a need to increase Microsoft's tablet share, and he also explained why he believes Google and Apple haven't won't yet. "I absolutely believe that in a world where there are going to be many screen sizes, and ecosystems across all of those screen sizes, and cloud services that'll be available on all ecosystems, that's what Microsoft's future is."
